Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. Dr. Diep is excellent for afrocentric hair, I would also consult with Dr.Umar, both are in California, so if you’re in California it may be worth while.
  2. Follow their instructions. Dr. Diep does not tell his patients to spray the grafts either. I didn't use any saline sprays or ATP sprays and I turned out just fine.
  3. Hair transplant experience Intoduction; I am nearly 35 years old male, suffering with male baldness since 10 years, mostly in my crown area, my hair line always been a Micky Mouse type and was driving me mad. I am classified as a Norwood 3 vertex but as I said my hair line have had just a slightly hair loss. My hair transplant decision was very spontaneous; I work in medical fields where I get to see lots of people suffering on daily basis. This make me concluded that life is too short for hesitation and we should do anything what could make us happy. Choosing a Dr. I after reviewing prices in London (I am Easter European Living in the UK) I have decided to go for Turkey. I have logged in to I think most of the forums for hair lost, hair transplant, hair restoration topics (with the same nickname). I think what I was looking at for choosing a Dr was his international credential in Hair transplant. In the forums there is lots of politics going on and it’s hard to distinguish what is right and what is false. My choice I have narrowed to actually few Dr`s in Turkey. Dr Erdogan, Dr Doganay and Dr Civas, Dr Karadeniz and Dr Yamman. Because I am HIV poz I also find out that sometimes is better to check if the clinic will accept me as a patient. So after the disclosure only one Dr left and to be honest was really pleased with him as he was my ultimate winner anyway (he is a member for the well-respected IAHRS organisation). His reps Didem and Mustafa were always super nice and very quick with replying all off my questions and never tried to push me to have the procedure with them. I also requested that I would like to have my hair crown done on one day and the hair line the next day and that the Dr do all the implanting himself which wasn’t a problem because this is their working protocol anyway. After reviling on the forums that I have plan of going with Dr Doganay I have met with lots of criticism of his latest work and warnings not to risk being butchered by “dogy Doganay”. At this point I was really confused and could not make up my mind. (Suddenly there is Dr Hakan ex employer who is spilling the beans about his unethical work and lots of not very favourable reviews at the same time. Apparently there was a time when AHD clinic was run by the technicians instead the Dr himself) Additionally I have contacted International Hair Transplant Mentor in USA to give me his opinion about Dr Hakan work and as I was expecting he just assured me that my choice it is a good one. First day I have arrived to Istanbul Ataturk airport and as prompted I was picked up buy a smiling driver who did not speak English but straight away he passes me his mobile so I could speak to Didem who explained to me the schedule of my hair transplant procedure. I was taken to very nice hotel near the airport ParkInn by Radison (the Ahd clinic is like 3 km away from the hotel) where I could just relax for the rest of the day. Second day After an amazing breakfast at the hotel I was taken I think by John (who speak English) to the clinic. There I met with Didem and the rest of the staff. I have already felt like someone important and long awaited for. Except Didem I also had been accompanied by a very young handsome translator Tfeem? Not sure about the spelling. Then I met with Dr himself who looked at my donor hair and find out about my expectation for the HT and baldness in my family. He also drawn the hair line which I was very happy with (I have seen some critics if triangle like hair line made by Hakan but I don’t think they can be true cause the Dr is using the laser toll invented I think by Dr Schapiro? The conclusion was that I have very thin hair (which is true) and I will need around 3500 grafts to have a nice density for my hair line and my crown cover. The operation was divided on to two days as requested and I was taken to another room to have my hair shaven. In the operation room the Dr was waiting for me already and draw another hair line and I think also marked the area which will be harvested. He then injected me with anaesthesia (which I think is the only painful moments in the whole HT procedure). My hair was harvested by Ahmed who sims very professional and like someone who is also well respected within the clinic. After 2. 5 h the harvesting was done (1750 grafts) and I had 15 min lunch break. When was the time for implantation the Dr again gave me anaesthetic injections (it’s not a shame if you cry there lol) and when everything was numbed and proceed with implanting my grafts. As a medic professional I also work in surgery theatres and must admit that everything was at the highest standards. They didn’t fault at anything and after I think 4.5 -5 hours first part was done. After the procedure I was given neck pillow some pain relief, antibiotics and anti-inflammatory meds and taken to the hotel where I have order room service diner. Third Day After a good sleep (yep I didn’t have a problem sleeping with the neck pillow) I was taken to the clinic and exactly the same procedure was performing on me with 1650 grafts. To be honest the second day was much easier as I was much more relaxed and didn’t feel that much pain while being injected with anaesthetics. Aha what I have to mention was that I have my crown done and hair line at the same time but the grafts numbers where divided on to two days (the Dr recommended that it will be the best option for best results) Fourth day I had my hair washed and instructed how to taking cate of them and also was given baby lotion baby shampoo (which I could take with me unfortunately) some anti-scaring cream for my donor area, biotin, finasteride supply for 3 months and sexy fisherman hat to protect my head from infection. Conclusion Over all I am very satisfied with the clinic, everyone was super professional, nice and helpful. The Dr himself is very approachable and even that his English is not best he does try to communicate with you to make sure you are happy and at east. Didem is very bobbly and nice to be around. Tfeem? Very claver 21 years old from Aleppo, Syrian boy who learned English form watching American movies, he always finds interesting subject to talk about with you. Finally, I am really happy how my hair looks like after HT and looking forward to the next moths. Hope my results will confirm that Dr Hakan Doganay is very talented HT surgeon.
  4. Im sorry but something seems a bit off about this review. Dr. Diep doesn't perform surgeries on saturdays ?
  5. FUT. I am also strongly considering Dr. Diep. I think his work is incredible. Will post pics soon.
  6. I fully appreciate the hairline Dr. Diep gave me. But probably more than anything I like that the Bosley plugs have disappeared. Even when my hair is wet, they're gone. I can't see them.
  7. Legend, when you mentioned earlier about having to get blood work done for Dr. Diep, I was a little surprised. They never mentioned that to me, and I never had it done. I wonder if it's because I had an FUT, and you were scheduled for an FUE...? Anyways, I wish you luck on your choice. Please keep us updated.
  8. Hey guys ,, so I need to confirm with H&W today to book it or not .. even though I would of liked to have surgery with diep .. but this is a good alternative .. getting 2500 fut grafts for around $12000.. im choosing them because I know they are excellent with the scars . Able to dense pack the hairline and have good customer service and guarantees their work .. Their hairline drawing is okay .. but I will delegate to Dr. Hasson to be aggressive with my hairline n to mimic doctor dieps hairline drawing he has of me .. So should I take the plunge ?
  9. IMO H&W do great temple work, I have seen some really natural results. Generally, H&W are known for transplanting patients like myself with a large balding area. However, I don’t think they can’t be aggressive, so much as most of their cases wouldn’t benefit from it, if that makes sense. I would also encourage you to consult with other top docs such as Konoir, Cooley, Gabel. With that said, it’s a shame about Dr. Diep, because I do feel he would have done a great job on you.
  10. Thanks for the response. Hopefully it does turn out great. I will definitely look at your Finasteride thread. I spoke to Dr. Diep and he as a prescription waiting for me, I just have to figure out if I want to pursue it.
  11. Evening, I'm african american male age 40. I'm have MPB, there is thining in the horse shoe area on top of my head, its not completely bald, but when hair grows a bit you can see my thinning area. I'm interested in getting hair transplant and I will only do FUE, not FUT, since I wear my hair low. Live on the east coast near Virginia, and i'm willing to travel as far as west coast to do the surgey, I would prefer not to, incase something goes wrong and I need to consult with Dr. So, my question is who would you say are the top 5 Doctors that specialize in African American men FUE procedure or atleast give a suggestion. I'm looking at Dr Diep (San Jose) and Dr. Yates (Illinois). One concern I have with Dr Diep is that isn't a member of iahrs would you say its a must for Dr. to be member of this IAHRS Diep, seems to have the most experience with african american FUE and understands our hair. What are your thoughts? Thanks for all your guidance on my journey..
  12. I'm a 32 year old, Norwood type 5/6, and fairly set on getting an FUT transplant in January. I had an FUT procedure back in 2012, which wasn't great by any measure, but it gave me the traces of a hairline that I'm comfortable with in terms of its placement, but it needs *serious* strengthening. And of course I've lost a lot more hair since 2012. I'm hoping for around 3k grafts in the front 1/3 to 1/2 of the top of my head. I can post photos if it would be helpful. Any similarly situated patients of either Diep or Gabel who'd care to share their experiences? Feel free to PM me if you'd prefer. My priorities are (1) a safe and careful procedure, and (2) hair density! I get bad headaches, which worsened somewhat after my first HT. So, it's really important to me to work with a conscientious physician, who will take care to avoid things like a scar which extends too far into the temporal region. I was deeply reassured by my conversation with Dr. Gabel. He seems like an incredibly thoughtful doctor. On the other hand, I'm also really impressed by the videos Diep has shared of his patients' results. Diep's photos/videos are some of the most remarkable I've seen. So any thoughts would be appreciated.
  13. There is not 1 instance in this thread where any of the posters thought a hair transplant is "charity". Just lmao at these moderators. They try to be so professional and politically correct all the time I cringe. Legend said he had the money, but the means to pay it were unavailable. Therefore, his surgery was canceled because his payment was going to be 1 day late. No doubt Dr. Diep has the right to run his business how he wants. I'm not denying that, but it's a bit ridiculous lol. Legend - I know you were second guessing some of your strategy for your HT (FUT vs FUE), so maybe this is a blessing in disguise before you go down this route.
  14. Obviously money is the motivator, this is cosmetic surgery. When you go to work, is money not the motivator? It’s silly to even bring this up. That doesn’t mean you don’t take pride in what you do or even work ethically, but acting like this is a charity is ridiculous. The agreement between patient and surgeon is to pay for the service provided. If the agreement is to pay before the procedure, then the patient must comply otherwise there is another patient willing and waiting. With that said, I do sympathize with Legend, he’s actually a good guy and I know he was excited about getting the surgery done, it was an unfortunate event. I know Dr. Diep personally and he’s the kind of guy who takes pride in his work and try’s to help his patients as best he can. If legend were to set up a consultation with him and explain what happened I’m sure he can reach an agreement and understanding. Legend let me know if you’d like me to reach out to Dr. Diep for you.
  15. Thanks so much for the pictures. Since you are not even at 6 months so far it appears to be improving...im anxious to see how much density you will get from Arochas work. Ive held off on booking with Dr Diep snd I consulted with Dr. Arocha last week as well. Im Black with a similar hair texture to yours so your thread is very helpful
  16. They’re both great surgeons, with a wealth of results online. I personally went to Dr. Diep, but also met with Dr. Gabel before and he is an excellent choice, as well. Choose whoever you feel more comfortable with and best suits your needs.
  17. Ok since both titles seemed inaccurate I changed the title to something a bit more generic. I trust this will meet no objections. “Couldn’t Have Surgery With Dr. Diep - Here’s Why” Best wishes, Bill
  18. I agree nothing the doctor did was malicious or outside standard practice, but this new title is equally if not more misleading. A deposit was paid and pocketed but they cancelled due to it being a day late, not because he couldn't afford it. I doubt Diep's office would have had any issue accommodating this, Also suspect they would have booked in a new patient on a cancellation waiting list for the slot already, and after pocketing the $1000 deposit. "Procedure with Dr. Diep cancelled after payment was a day late" would be more accurate. They're running a tight ship and its fair enough, but it also doesn't make them seem like they go out of their way to be helpful on a customer service level either despite it certainly being possible in this case. But who knows, we don't know the full correspondence anyway.
  19. So I went ahead and changed the title to couldn’t afford procedure with Dr. Diep last minute” which is a lot more realistic and truthful. Dr. Diep didn’t cancel on you, you just realized you couldn’t afford the procedure and therefore, you couldn’t proceed. If you feel another title of this topic is more realistic, please let me know and we can consider changing it. But I don’t think it’s fair to say he canceled on you when in reality, you just couldn’t afford it. At the end of the day, while hair transplant surgery is desired, it is an elective procedure and we need to be able to pay for the procedure in order to achieve it. Best wishes, Bill
  20. Legend, Like the others, I’m truly sorry to hear about your situation but I also don’t think title of this topic as fair. It’s not that Dr. Diep cancel on you, is that you just can’t afford to pay for the procedure so you can’t have it. So I think we should change the title of the topic to something more realistic. What do you think might be more reasonable? This makes it sound like that the doctor just bailed on you for no reason when there’s obviously a reason and you admitted it yourself, you can’t pay for an FUE procedure anyway. While it’s truly unfortunate, this doesn’t sound like it’s something that the doctor did out of malicious intent, but you realize you couldn’t afford it so therefore, you had to move on and undergo a procedure that you can pay for. So please let me know what we should change the title of this topic to Orr I guess I will think of something to change it to that’s more realistic. best wishes, Bill
  21. Well guys, yesterday was my third FUE procedure 2nd with Dr. Diep, so in total i've had around 5,300-5,400 grafts all via FUE. I stayed at the Bristol Hotel literally 1 mile away from Dr. Diep's office, surgery was at 7:30 AM, I woke up had breakfast which was complimentary of the hotel, I arrived at Dr. Diep's around 7:38, they handed me the lunch menu, a variety of different places, being the American I am I chose a burger place lol. Once Dr. Diep came in we went in to his office he asked me what my plan was for this procedure, he also did advise me that due to my previous surgeries my donor was limited so we would have to be smart in our strategy, we both agreed that 500 grafts in the midscalp behind the forelock and the rest in the upper portion of the crown with my density on the left to comb from left to right and on the right to comb right downward would be best for me. It's important to be realistic and understand the limitations of supply and demand. So he drew the areas that we were going to work on that day. I have to say my experience with Dr. Diep was very pleasant, the previous procedure I was pretty much knocked out the whole time, this time I was awake for quite a bit, I was awake for the extractions which I can assure are done by Dr.Diep, the recipient sites as well, I nodded off once the grafts were placed. I made a FATAL mistake when my GF was driving me home I was still kinda drugged up, I live in LA so its a 5 hour drive from the Bay area, she braked hard and I hit my head on the dashboard, some blood came out coincidentally Dr. Diep had texted me to see if everything was okay, i told him what happened and texted him the pictures he said unfortunately some of those grafts may have been lost, the good thing is that it was only a small portion, he said not to touch the recipient area and keep the surgical cap on. I'm really kicking myself for not being careful out of three surgeries this was the first time this happened . Oh well if anything it was only maybe 3-4 grafts that were damaged but still when you're a Norwood 6 grafts are weighted in gold. Anyways now I'm sitting at home and as promised I will be documenting my procedure, here are some pics taken pre-op and post op along with my donor area at the moment. Pre-Op crown photo, the top portion where the circles are marked are the areas that would receive the most density Pre-OP midscalp the circle just above my frontal forelock, this area when grown out will maximize the layering effect when I comb from left to right or if I decide to slick my hair back The damaged grafts of when I hit my head  Crown post op, Dr. Diep was surprised he was able to cover that much Mid Scalp the red bloody spots were from yesterday preying that they can survive by some miracle Back donor area Left side view Right side view
  22. I mentioned this on another thread. They (Dr. Diep), set me up for FUT five weeks after I applied. They called me three times with cancellations so I could have gotten in much sooner. But it was too much of a hassle for me to change my flight and hotel. FYI
  23. They tell you your money has to be paid in full, I think ten days before your surgery. If you're considering Dr. Diep just make sure you've paid well in advance. I sent them a check 30 days in advance just so there'd be no problems with payment.
  24. How could they cancel spontaneously like that. I am looking to get an appointment with Dr. Diep and I am from out of the country, I would need to book flights, hotel and vacation way in advanced. To find out they can cancel like that is very nerve-wracking.
  25. I hear you, and thank you so much for sharing. I'm still leaning towards Dr. Diep but his 7 month waiting list is discouraging so I'm still browsing around to see if I will find anyone just as good who could do it sooner. I did a virtual consult with Dr Arocha and based on photos of seen online I'm not sure if he would get me the density that Diep seems able to achieve. I'm going to try to make a decision over the weekend.
