Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

Found 1,831 results

  1. Dr. Diep does mostly FUE, and if you look at his results it doesn't appear that the larger punch size has affected his end results. I haven't seen any permanent shock loss, or excessive scarring on any of his video's.
  2. This is something that’s been regurgitated for quite some time. In fact, I’ve heard arguments on both sides. As patients, we don’t really know all of the surgical intricacies. One surgeon may favor a smaller punch and another a larger punch. One may favor a manual and another a motorized. Every surgery has it’s particular set of tools, just like anything. Dr. Konoir made a great analogy of what’s better a flathead screwdriver or a phillips head screwdriver? Depends on the job. My first surgery was 1mm punches and second was .9mm no adjacent damage. Btw you think your crown looks ridiculous look at how mine was, btw thats .9mm with Dr. Diep as well.
  3. Why do you say that? I don't believe the Dr. used a punch size that is different than what he ordinarily uses. Keep in mind my donor area looked really bad on day 1 likely due to the excessive bleeding. Is there any evidence to suggest that Diep's punch size results in transection of adjacent units?
  4. I really appreciate the response. The picture you posted I think looks very similar and it gave me a huge sigh of relief. I can't figure out why this period is so nerve wracking and I'm getting stuck trying to figure out every detail that is happening with my hair. Wish I could just smoke some weed and wake up a year from now. Diep's e-mail response to this: "I showed your photos to Dr. Diep and he said at this stage there is nothing we can't do. We won't know the affect until 1 year from the day of your surgery. But it looks like you are in the shedding phase, cracks and crust that appears in the recipient area are normal, expect more to occur."
  5. Day 6: Again did a cleaning of the backside, and also the front. I am getting a bit concerned that Dr. Diep's instructions regarding the cleaning of the recipient area are wholly inadequate. Essentially his instructions are to clean *only* the donor area for the first 3 days. Then on days 4-7, clean the recipient area by indirect flow of water, squeezing soap onto the area, then indirect flow to rinse, with no direct touching or patting whatsoever. As a result, it seems like there is a thin film of residue all over my recipient area. Yesterday, when it was nicked with a towel, a part of that film was cracked and started to peel slightly. Today, after cleaning, I took more photos of the area and it appears that the crack is getting larger and peeling further. Other areas are starting to peel as well. Does this have any implication for the grafts? I'm not sure - I've seen posts in other threads where this is reported as normal. However, there are dozens and dozens of Dr. responses on realself indicating that this is *not* normal and that the recipient area is not being cleaned well enough. So far, I have not been able to get a response from Diep's office (I e-mailed them photos yesterday and today, and they told me he will get back to me when he can). Here are closeups of my overall graft area: Here is how the donor area is looking:
  6. Nothing to worry about, you should only worry if you see blood. That looks like a scab that came off. In terms of washing, I took a bowl of luke warm water with the shampoo Dr. Diep gave me, but even if you run out just use baby shampoo. I mixed the shampoo in the bowl of water and slowly poured it over my head dabbing it gently with a sponge. I did this for about 5-10 minutes. Past 7 days you can massage the area a bit harder to remove the scabs and crusts. By that time the grafts are definitely secure.
  7. From a very satisfied patient of Dr. Diep myself, I have every confidence this will turn out great for you. It's difficult to play the waiting game, I know, but you will be rewarded. Yes please keep us updated on your progress.
  8. I've seen all of Dr. Dieps videos on youtube. And I agree with your thoughts on everything. Dr. Diep does really work some magic I must say. Good luck and fingers crossed
  9. Since you are a former patient of Diep's - do you recall what your recipient site cleaning process was? The written instructions I have are fairly vague and I've been erring on the side of caution since I recall the techs telling me that I was bleeding a lot during the graft placement. Yesterday I basically poured a few cups of cold water across the recipient site, lathered up the sponge with the shampoo provided, and squeezed the sponge to let the entire graft area be covered in lather (not making any physical contact). I just let the foam sit there for about a minute or two, then used cups of water to pour off the foam. I just let the hair on the crown flow wherever it did and let everything air dry. I had some small white bubbles that went away after a few minutes. The vagueness in the instructions is how long I should be letting this area be soaking with the shampoo - and how much water I should be using. I think you aren't wrong to cringe at the donor area - this seems to be characteristic of Dr. Diep's patients due to the size of the punch. I think that if I hadn't done my research prior to the surgery, it would have freaked me out as well when comparing it the 1-day post-op photos from other doctors. However, knowing this reality, and also hearing the doctors explanation (says it gives him a healthier graft to work with), I knowingly accepted it. To me, the real consideration is how the donor area looks *after* healing - and Dr. Diep is not hiding the ball here. There are plenty of videos posted showing the donor areas in the months following the extraction areas, and they look no different than the donor areas subjected to smaller punches. Melvin's pictures in this thread are just one example. Perhaps there is a perceptible difference if someone cuts their hair with a very short guard on the back - but this isn't something that I will likely do. I will say, however, that a second major consideration of the Diep's donor areas is the viability of future FUE procedures, and whether or not the punch has any implications for future extractions in the same area. To this - I can't say I've found any definitive answers - and it may be a real issue for me in the future if my hair loss continues if this extraction method does jeopardize the surrounding grafts. I don't know enough about this to offer an opinion. Here is one example of someone that I think has similar hair type to mine - his donor area looks untouched: I can say as to the immediately post-op photos that might explain some of the mess - I bled more than usual per the techs. I'm not sure if this is due to semi-regular marijuana smoking (1-2x/week) leading up to the procedure, or the regular supplements that I take (I stopped 1 week before the procedure but many of the things I take were on the list), or my high blood pressure (the tech said it was 166 right before the drugs kicked in, but insisted that was normal since I was really nervous about the procedure). Other than that, I am an exceptionally healthy individual (I don't smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol, eat junk food, I've exercised/weight trained 2-3x/week since I was 17 years old, and I rarely get sick). I'll continue to update this thread with progress pictures over the coming year. I can say right now though that I don't have any major concerns with the work other than the need for him to revise his printed post-op instructions, and I'm looking forward to the results.
  10. Anyone here use minoxidil post-transplant to speed up results? Dr. Diep said it was recommended and fine to use now at 5 weeks post-op. Anyone with experience on this? Hesitant in case it irritates the scalp...
  11. Hello, This is long overdue but I thought I would share my results. I had a FUT procedure with Dr. Diep on 3.17.2016. I had 3500 grafts in the front and 700 grafts on the crown. I am from the bay area and was willing to travel in order to find the best doctor. After doing plenty of research I was really fortunate that Dr. Diep was local. I am extremely happy with my results, he promised that I would have excellent outcome, and he certainly delivered. In terms of the timeline, I started to see decent growth around month 3 (June 2016), at month 6 it was thick but not perfect, then months 8-12 I hit amazing density. My hair line is about as natural as it gets. It was seriously the best decision I have made. I know it’s a tough mental and financial decision. However, I committed and couldn’t be happier.
  12. Background: Date of Surgery: March 11, 2017 Type of Surgery: FUE Number of Grafts: 2762 Age at time of surgery: 24 turning 25 Currently Regimen: 2% Rogaine liquid once per day My Story: My hairline started to slightly recede when I was 17 years old. Over the years, the hair loss continued. Within the last 2 years, my hair loss became very aggressive to the point where it became increasingly difficult to conceal my hair loss with side swept bangs. Selection of Doctor: After extensive research through reading forums, reviews and YouTube I decided to undergo FUE surgery with Dr. Diep. I had two FaceTime consultations with Dr. Diep. I never felt rushed during the consultation and appreciated the fact that during my consultations Dr. Diep took the time to answer each of my questions. Being from Canada, I have also considered two different doctors in Canada. What made me choose Dr. John Diep was his extensive collection of YouTube videos showcasing many of his dense and natural FUE results. Most importantly, Dr. Diep does the FUE extractions manually himself (so no technicians doing extractions) which made me feel comfortable because I would want a surgeon who specializes in FUE to do the extractions. Surgery Experience: I flew in from Canada to Los Gatos the night before the surgery. The next morning, I arrived really early to the MHTA clinic. The receptionist had me fill up some paper work. Afterwards, I met Dr. Diep and we had a discussion where Dr. Diep drew my new hairline. Everyone at the clinic was very nice, courteous and professional. After the hairline was drawn, I took some medication pills and they took my blood pressure. The surgery began and l was done at around 5:00PM. Overall, the surgery was painless and I didn’t feel anything. Dr. Diep gave me a kit that contained antibiotics and pain medications. The next day after the surgery, I came in for a hair wash where the nurse would wash my hair and show me how to properly wash my hair. Then I flew back to Canada. Anytime I had a question, the clinic would respond to my e-mails in a timely manner. By month 2, I experienced the shedding phase where the majority of the implanted hairs fell out. By month 4, I began to see hairs sprouting. By month 8, I was very happy with the hair growth in the recipient area. Between month 8 and month 10, the density increased drastically. By month 12, I was very pleased with the results because my hair is dense and natural. I am very glad that I decided to fly out to Los Gatos to visit Dr. Diep. I can walk outside and if the wind blows, it doesn’t matter and I don’t get nervous of the wind blowing because I have a full set of hair now. If I need another hair transplant in the future for the back half of my head, I would surely select Dr. Diep as my surgeon again.
  13. Since Dr. Diep ( or one of his tech's) shaved just the front half of my head, and a strip in the back for the FUT, no way could I go anywhere like that. Once home I shaved off the rest of it and wore a hat everywhere for about three months.
  14. On August 3rd 2014, I underwent my first FUE hair transplant, performed by Doctor John Diep of Los Gatos, California. Dr. Diep transplanted a total of 2,460 grafts in the front half of my head. He recreated my hairline and added grafts further back to increase density. The result was fantastic (link: https://www.hairrestorationnetwork.com/topic/39774-2460-fue-hair-transplant-by-doctor-john-diep/), so I decided to quit using Minoxidil. I knew I'd pay for it, but decided that a second transplant to restore healthy hair in my problem area would be far better than taking Minoxidil for life. A quick side note; Minoxidil made my face puffy and caused deep creases/wrinkles to form on my forehead. On November 17th 2015, Dr. Diep transplanted an additional 2,220 grafts (link: https://www.hairrestorationnetwork.com/topic/43867-second-fue-ht-by-dr-diep-2220-grafts-to-improve-density-4700-grafts-total/). Enough said. Here is my update. Just 3 weeks shy from my 4 year hair transformation anniversary. Thank you so much Dr. Diep, you're truly a master and have made me a calmer and happier person.
  15. @Legend007 can you tell us how you used to wear your hair when you weren't experiencing hair loss? and how you plan to wear your hair after your (amazing) results come in? I wouldn't sell H&W short and already not seem thrilled with what they did for you. They know what they are doing. You have to trust them. 1) why do you think you should have gone to Dr. Diep? Your results havent even come in yet and I think it would've been similar price..? 2) We can't really see your temples in any of the pictures you provided but it seems like they're in good standing. If you wear your hair like in the pics you've provided you can't even see your temples..? 3) its disappointing that you're already saying "so this transplant won’t make a big difference in my looks". You dont know that for sure. Why would you say that?
  16. I started losing my hair fairly young due to genetics and poor hairstyle decisions (dreads really thin your hair out and mess up your hairline); however, I was very lucky to have found Dr. Diep, who did not reject me at 23 because I was too young. No , instead he advised me on how to have a conservative procedure where I would not have the perfect hair, but in the long run, it would set me up to look my best as I aged. This meant not bringing my hairline lower, nor fixing the receding corners, but I was ok with those expectations as long as I kept my hair. I was incredibly lucky to get the FUE from him because I actually cancelled the FUT procedure with the first doctor I had found in Oakland because I didn't want a messed up scar on my head (I usually keep my sides very short). The first picture is of me in August 2014 where you cannot really tell from the picture, but my hair was very thin in the front. I got 1100 grafts in February 2015 and the second picture is in March 2 or 3 weeks after. The final picture was taken last Sunday, and yes, you can dye your hair after you get a transplant! Luckily, I have also been taking propecia and rogaine since I was 21, and their effects are additive over time. Now, at 26 (soon to be 27), I have plenty of hair on my head, and am thinking about a second procedure with Dr. Diep before I turn 30 to fill in some of my thinning areas (and maybe restore my hairline a bit more); however, the main thing to keep in mind with these surgeries is to not strive for perfection, just focus on how you can maintain most of your hair for the rest your life. I was very fortunate to have found Dr. Diep because back in 2014, I did not even like to get my hair wet for fear of it looking thin. Now I can enjoy any activity no matter how messed up my hair gets.
  17. In short, I’m still congratulating myself for choosing a doctor who specializes in just one thing. I had a few transplants done before, over a period of several years, with another doctor who was qualified to do many different procedures on the face and skin-- and his work basically delivered what he'd promised. But his esthetic choices were very conservative and he never performed more than 300 grafts in one session on me. Dr. Diep did over 3,500 grafts on me in one session and his esthetic choices were wonderful. Obviously, it was a longer session than the ones I'd had before--it took all day--but I didn't have a problem with that. I wasn't 'out' during the session but was very much in a sleep-like state from pills they gave me. All I remember is they woke me up around noon and asked me what I wanted for lunch and I ordered a hamburger. Other than that, I have little memory of the procedure and no memory of any pain (of course, I woke up with bandages on my head and had to take some pain meds after that for a several days, and about 12 days later I came back to get the sutures removed- which was painless). I followed all of his instructions carefully and everything went pretty much as I expected. Overall, I would give Dr. Diep and his team the highest possible rating on 1) my experience of the procedure- I was very comfortable compared with the other procedures I'd had, 2) Suture removal and follow-up and 3) the RESULT which, of course, is the most important thing. The only drawback I can think of is that they couldn't accept a check for the final payment (not even a cashier's check), so I had to scramble at the last minute to raise my credit card limit--no big deal. I can't say enough about how good my hair looks now!
  18. Yeah, wasn't trying to be a smartass, just thought the pic was funny. Although Dr. Diep never called me personally, his clinic responded saying that the harvesting from one side is to limit scar tissue making future extractions more likely to be successful. I'm not 100% happy with this as I wasn't necessarily planning on having another procedure (at least not in the next 5-10 years). I've been holding my native hair on finasteride for over 5 years so I don't think this is too aggressive of an assumption. That, coupled with new treatments in the pipeline (histogen, cloning, etc.), makes me think another procedure isn't necessarily a given. That being said, it is what it is at this point. Dr. Diep has been producing homerun results for years now so I'm trying to just focus on what I can control (i.e., following post-op instructions, good nutrition, avoid sunburn, etc.). Could you either post a link to your thread ITT or PM me a link? Would be interested in following it. Best of luck with your upcoming procedure Raker!
  19. All are great choices, I went to Dr. Diep myself, but again all are great. I visited Dr. Mohebi today. I encourage you to check out my post I wrote about my visit. He’s underrated IMO, worth considering as well.
  20. No i didn't get refunded, there was actually more to it but I don't want to share money publicly. If you want more information, I will be happy to answer if you pm me. To be honest with you, I am not sure who did the extractions. I was pretty knocked out with the pill he game me. I do remember waking up for lunch and then waking up intermittently after lunch to 2 techs placing the grafts into my scalp. I do know that Dr. Diep did make the incisions because I was informed that he would be doing that. I knew I would need a 2nd and even a 3rd surgery for the mid scalp and crown. I was told that from this surgery that the front should be taken care of and should give the illusion of density when grown out longer. I don't think I will get much more density but I am happy that my face is framed and that there is hair in that area. I was bare before. Thanks for the well wishes, lets hope it gets a bit better.
  21. Thanks Melvin. I forgot to mention this to you in the past but I have been following you on youtube for a while now and your videos helped me make the decision to go with Dr. Diep. You had a amazing result.
  22. Okay I will take some pictures soon. I have Toppik in at the current moment. I would love to but I can't risk it with the med I am on now. If I stop taking this med then I may possibly get on Fin but I honestly doubt that. I used Minoxidil for 4 years in the past but didn't really see much of a benefit. It may stopped a lot of quick loss in the crown but I still had hair falling out so I stopped in 2015. Yes, I will probably not do anything for at least 4 more months. Then I will start ramping up my research to see which Dr I should go with. Maybe Diep again or Erdogan, Bisanaga, Rahal, Feriduni. I have been seeing a lot of great results from Dr. Coto in Spain on youtube. Do any of you know or have more information on him?
  23. Hi Spidey, your hairline looks very well designed. I noticed Dr. Hasson usually goes with a v-shape and more mature look, was this what he recommended as well before you decided to change it to the one you wanted? I am also looking at Dr. Hasson or Dr. Diep but i live locally in Vancouver as well.
