Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. The cost is going to be substantially lower in India, depending on the surgeon and the surgical technique US doctors charge anywhere from $5-10 per graft. In India, it's probably like $1-3 per graft depending on the surgeon. In my humble opinion, our site recommends the best surgeons in all of India. Both of these gentlemen traveled from different countries to India to have their hair transplants. Shera I believe is located in the UK and Harin in the US, if I'm not mistaken. With that said, never go by price alone. I encourage you to really look at the patient reviews. PM both Shera and Harin both are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I'm sure they are more than willing to help.My personal surgeon was Dr. Diep in California. It was convenient for me since I live in California, but I chose him based on the results first and foremost and I encourage you to do the same regardless of what doctor you choose.
  2. @John Doe, sorry if I missed it. But I didn't read if you're on any medications? Always a good idea to slow hair loss. Your goal is to keep what you have, for as long as possible, and restore with at hair transplant what you've lost. You narrowed it down to some good doctors. I can vouch that Dr. Wong produces some of the best crowns in the business. I would also add Dr. Shapiro to the list. Some of the best hairlines in the business… though a little more conservative in his approach (nothing wrong with that). Once you've narrowed down your list to the elites… the doctors who specialize in hair transplants… only perform your transplants… You'll notice that each specializes in one thing: Rahal, he's known for more youthful hairlines... His patients are usually in their 30s. Same with Shapiro, awesome at hairlines but his patients are a little older… Wong for crowns… You get the idea. So go with a doctor who specializes in what you want. Keep in mind that only a handful of doctors in North America are able to perform FUE consistently. But the ones who do… Produce some of the best results in the industry. You also want to look at factors like punch size, transection… Full and partial… Technique, etc. Now on the cost… I keep hearing that Turkey is less expensive… Guys need to know that's not true. Sure some clinics offer $1/graft… But you want to avoid them like the plague. They are cheap for a reason. At hair transplant is a one-shot deal. Don't risk it. Yes, there are a select few clinics in Turkey producing great results… But they're not cheap. Factoring cost of travel, exchange-rate… and the real risk of needing a touch up… and they are actually more expensive. You also need to factor in the cost of the second procedure. A lot of clinics offer discounts to past patients. I hope this helps man… Feel free to hit me up if you have any questions. Take your time, meet lots of patients, ask lots of questions… Here to help. PS. If you're curious I had FUE with Rahal. Photos are attached.
  3. The cost difference between the two can be quite substantial. I wish I could have my hair shorter on the sides and back, but I'm okay with it this short. When I had a minor FUT in 1992, I don't think anyone was doing FUE, or at least Bosley didn't offer it to me. Since I already had a scar, I chose to go that route again, this time with Dr. Diep.
  4. At Dr. Diep's request, I went on propecia, and I took it for I think, around 6 weeks. At about the week 5, I came down with all the horrible side effects associated with it. A month off it, the sides >started< to fade, but it took another month. Fortunately everything returned to normal after two months. I'm using a DHT blocking shampoo is all, and I'm experiencing very little hair loss at this time.
  5. awesome stuff Legend! How many cm or inches lower would you say your new hairline is? Do you know how many cm your eyebrow to your hairline was before surgery? Also how many cm from your eyebrow is post surgery now? I believe the typical hairline you would go for is 6.5 cm from top of eyebrow to the hairline for us asian guys. Dr. Diep recommended 6.5 cm for me as right now Im about 7.5 cm from my eyebrow to hairline.
  6. Okay, so the next week I flew to Canada .. around a two hour flight from California.. reason I chose to go with H&W? - They are a Top clinic , n I can’t take a chance of risking surgery n spending so much money on lower tier clinics . I also liked that they can dense pack the hairline, so I won’t have to go back again for a second pass for density . ( very important to me ) N when I asked the patient coordinator if they gurantee their work . He said of course buddy , it’s what we do here .. so By hearing that , i know already their customer service is going to be good. Customer oriented .. n I have peace of mind that I’m not spending $20,000 for average results . - n also , I was doctor hasson’s only patient that day .. Doctor Wong was doing FUE on another patient .. so I was really happy about that .. I wanted personal attention , n not feel like I’m at a hairmill . - I also changed my mind with going with FUE n wanted to do an FUT now.. since I felt I should maximize my donor with FUT first then do a FUE later on in life .. at first I never thought I would consider FUT but since I keep my hair medium to long .. the scar isn’t a big deal to me. Especially if it’s a clean , small scar, u won’t ever see it on me .. n it’s also more cost effective .. $12,000 for 2500 grafts fut vs $20,000 for 2500 FUE.. - When I arrived at the clinic . I got to meet Doctor Hasson for the first time n he gave me a evaluation . I insisted that he Measure my hair caliber with the densitômeter .. donor hair is around 80 microns top of head is around 70 microns . n the hairline around 40 microns.. It seems like I’ve been thinning all these years, good thing I got on finasteride last year , to hopefully slow it down .. I showed him the pic from above , of when dr. diep drew that hairline for me . I told Doctor Hasson to get close to that. After further examining my head he said I should do FUE with 2500 grafts .. since I still have a lot of hair up top , he didn’t feel like he can get it dense enough to match my native hair with 2500 FUT. since there be more single hairs than needed from a FUT .. then he examined my head n see if I even had enough laxity for a fut.. n I didn’t I booked this surgery date with h&w on a week notice .. so I didn’t have enough time to do scalp exercises .. I also have a small head n not much body fat .. my scalp is tight .. so right there my choice was to go FUE or go home . My first choice to do FUE anyways , so I was fine with it .. since he explained to me that FUE gives a denser hairline ( less see through effect ) because they can cherry pick all the bigger grafts . That makes sense to me .. n even though it costed me $8,000 more , totaling $20,000. It’s worth that extra cost today . - I also asked him how many FUE have u done ( since they are famous for their FUT) he said around 1,000. Then I asked who’s going to be doing the extraction, n he pointed to his tech Carmen . Then I asked how many years of experience does she have. ( I can be kinda blunt sometimes ) He said 4.... then he reassured me that she was really good , n that she can hold her own extracting against other doctors during the hair restoration conferences ... i asked doctor hasson straight up if he will gurantee his work ,. I gave him the terms of at least 90% of growth , n not have one side denser than the other .. I was like I don’t want to come back if it doesn’t grow well , n he was like we don’t either .. then I asked if he can put it in writing , n he said do u want me to sign it too? I was like , yeah ! after that I was good to go , I requested extra meds , so I can sleep for most of it . N requested that they shave my hair not too high so I can cover up my surgery . N I asked Carmen the extractor tech , to not get too many hairs from the side ( since it’s thinner ) n not overharvest any one area, I don’t want bald patches .. she said okay I also asked doctor hasson to go up as high as possible on the recipient area . Replace the miniaturized hairs on the hairline . So I can build that wall of hair .. - it’s a good thing I’ve Done my research ; n know what to expect and know what I want and ask for .... to be cont. .. pics are right after we finished the implantation ., it looks clean , nice n dense .. not too bloody either .. n the 8.5mm punch is barely noticeable ..
  7. There are several patient reviews from Dr. Diep, these are a few out of dozens of patient reviews. At the end of the day, it’s your choice. If this makes you uncomfortable continue researching. I can personally attest to Dr. Diep’s work, but in the end it’s up to you to decide.
  8. Remember you case! I am sure everyone in here wishes you nth but the best. Did Dr. Harris or Dr. Diep offer any explanation what went wrong and/or what will be done different this time? Some clinics have an internal protocol how extraction and implantation went. Bigger punch diameter? Different way to implant the grafts (forceps/implanter)? From your old thread I have recognized that the transplanted hair appeared also thin and has slightly lighter colour. Maybe a sign that extraction was putting to much stress on the roots. All the best
  9. Ok guys, this is getting ridiculous, Dr. Diep has no need to post fake reviews. He literally has hundreds if not thousands of video results on YouTube I'm in one of them, why would the clinic waste their time posting fake reviews with no pictures? Also, the clinic has almost a year waiting list to get surgery. There’s no need to do fake reviews, his results and waiting list speak for itself. At the end of your 12 month follow-up the clinic will let you know that an honest review would be greatly appreciated. There’s no incentive or compensation for posting a review or even appearing on YouTube, the clinic simply states they’d appreciate it. These are likely patients who just want to do something nice, but don’t want their pictures on the internet. This is actually quite common and I get several requests a week asking me to remove pictures that don’t show anything but hair. People are afraid that someone would be able to tell who they are, as ridiculous as that sounds it’s a real fear. So, its no surprise that many of these individuals don’t post their pictures. However, moving forward I’ve asked Dr. Diep to let his patients know that posting reviews with no pictures do more harm than good.
  10. Legend, if it was the clinic they would post pictures. Dr. Diep is one of the best surgeons in the United States he hs no reason to fake reviews. It’s likely that the clinic suggest to patients to post their reviews and these patients just post a review with no pictures. I’ve reached out to Dr. Diep to aks his patients to either post a review with pictures or to not pist it, but with his waiting list he has no reason to do shady marketing like that.
  11. I’m sure they mean well, but may not want to post their pictures. In my opinion, post a review with pictures or don’t post one at all. Also, I’d like to add that Dr. Diep has a large portfolio of patients, me being one of them.
  12. Hello, This is long overdue but I thought I would share my results. I had a FUT procedure with Dr. Diep on 3.17.2016. I had 3500 grafts in the front and 700 grafts on the crown. I am from the bay area and was willing to travel in order to find the best doctor. After doing plenty of research I was really fortunate that Dr. Diep was local. I am extremely happy with my results, he promised that I would have excellent outcome, and he certainly delivered. In terms of the timeline, I started to see decent growth around month 3 (June 2016), at month 6 it was thick but not perfect, then months 8-12 I hit amazing density. My hair line is about as natural as it gets. It was seriously the best decision I have made. I know it’s a tough mental and financial decision. However, I committed and couldn’t be happier.
  13. Honestly, these type of reviews worry me. And it seems as if Dr. Diep is loaded with these type of one and done, without pic reviews.
  14. Background: Date of Surgery: March 11, 2017 Type of Surgery: FUE Number of Grafts: 2762 Age at time of surgery: 24 turning 25 Currently Regimen: 2% Rogaine liquid once per day My Story: My hairline started to slightly recede when I was 17 years old. Over the years, the hair loss continued. Within the last 2 years, my hair loss became very aggressive to the point where it became increasingly difficult to conceal my hair loss with side swept bangs. Selection of Doctor: After extensive research through reading forums, reviews and YouTube I decided to undergo FUE surgery with Dr. Diep. I had two FaceTime consultations with Dr. Diep. I never felt rushed during the consultation and appreciated the fact that during my consultations Dr. Diep took the time to answer each of my questions. Being from Canada, I have also considered two different doctors in Canada. What made me choose Dr. John Diep was his extensive collection of YouTube videos showcasing many of his dense and natural FUE results. Most importantly, Dr. Diep does the FUE extractions manually himself (so no technicians doing extractions) which made me feel comfortable because I would want a surgeon who specializes in FUE to do the extractions. Surgery Experience: I flew in from Canada to Los Gatos the night before the surgery. The next morning, I arrived really early to the MHTA clinic. The receptionist had me fill up some paper work. Afterwards, I met Dr. Diep and we had a discussion where Dr. Diep drew my new hairline. Everyone at the clinic was very nice, courteous and professional. After the hairline was drawn, I took some medication pills and they took my blood pressure. The surgery began and l was done at around 5:00PM. Overall, the surgery was painless and I didn’t feel anything. Dr. Diep gave me a kit that contained antibiotics and pain medications. The next day after the surgery, I came in for a hair wash where the nurse would wash my hair and show me how to properly wash my hair. Then I flew back to Canada. Anytime I had a question, the clinic would respond to my e-mails in a timely manner. By month 2, I experienced the shedding phase where the majority of the implanted hairs fell out. By month 4, I began to see hairs sprouting. By month 8, I was very happy with the hair growth in the recipient area. Between month 8 and month 10, the density increased drastically. By month 12, I was very pleased with the results because my hair is dense and natural. I am very glad that I decided to fly out to Los Gatos to visit Dr. Diep. I can walk outside and if the wind blows, it doesn’t matter and I don’t get nervous of the wind blowing because I have a full set of hair now. If I need another hair transplant in the future for the back half of my head, I would surely select Dr. Diep as my surgeon again.
  15. He isn't asking about FUT though, he's asking about FUE, Dr Diep has quite a few FUE's documented on here and on youtube where as Dr. Hasson has a few but really has been a specialist in FUT from what I've researched, fair enough though, just seems you are going with the one who has less documented FUE results.
  16. On August 3rd 2014, I underwent my first FUE hair transplant, performed by Doctor John Diep of Los Gatos, California. Dr. Diep transplanted a total of 2,460 grafts in the front half of my head. He recreated my hairline and added grafts further back to increase density. The result was fantastic (link: https://www.hairrestorationnetwork.com/topic/39774-2460-fue-hair-transplant-by-doctor-john-diep/), so I decided to quit using Minoxidil. I knew I'd pay for it, but decided that a second transplant to restore healthy hair in my problem area would be far better than taking Minoxidil for life. A quick side note; Minoxidil made my face puffy and caused deep creases/wrinkles to form on my forehead. On November 17th 2015, Dr. Diep transplanted an additional 2,220 grafts (link: https://www.hairrestorationnetwork.com/topic/43867-second-fue-ht-by-dr-diep-2220-grafts-to-improve-density-4700-grafts-total/). Enough said. Here is my update. Just 3 weeks shy from my 4 year hair transformation anniversary. Thank you so much Dr. Diep, you're truly a master and have made me a calmer and happier person.
  17. I started losing my hair fairly young due to genetics and poor hairstyle decisions (dreads really thin your hair out and mess up your hairline); however, I was very lucky to have found Dr. Diep, who did not reject me at 23 because I was too young. No , instead he advised me on how to have a conservative procedure where I would not have the perfect hair, but in the long run, it would set me up to look my best as I aged. This meant not bringing my hairline lower, nor fixing the receding corners, but I was ok with those expectations as long as I kept my hair. I was incredibly lucky to get the FUE from him because I actually cancelled the FUT procedure with the first doctor I had found in Oakland because I didn't want a messed up scar on my head (I usually keep my sides very short). The first picture is of me in August 2014 where you cannot really tell from the picture, but my hair was very thin in the front. I got 1100 grafts in February 2015 and the second picture is in March 2 or 3 weeks after. The final picture was taken last Sunday, and yes, you can dye your hair after you get a transplant! Luckily, I have also been taking propecia and rogaine since I was 21, and their effects are additive over time. Now, at 26 (soon to be 27), I have plenty of hair on my head, and am thinking about a second procedure with Dr. Diep before I turn 30 to fill in some of my thinning areas (and maybe restore my hairline a bit more); however, the main thing to keep in mind with these surgeries is to not strive for perfection, just focus on how you can maintain most of your hair for the rest your life. I was very fortunate to have found Dr. Diep because back in 2014, I did not even like to get my hair wet for fear of it looking thin. Now I can enjoy any activity no matter how messed up my hair gets.
  18. In short, I’m still congratulating myself for choosing a doctor who specializes in just one thing. I had a few transplants done before, over a period of several years, with another doctor who was qualified to do many different procedures on the face and skin-- and his work basically delivered what he'd promised. But his esthetic choices were very conservative and he never performed more than 300 grafts in one session on me. Dr. Diep did over 3,500 grafts on me in one session and his esthetic choices were wonderful. Obviously, it was a longer session than the ones I'd had before--it took all day--but I didn't have a problem with that. I wasn't 'out' during the session but was very much in a sleep-like state from pills they gave me. All I remember is they woke me up around noon and asked me what I wanted for lunch and I ordered a hamburger. Other than that, I have little memory of the procedure and no memory of any pain (of course, I woke up with bandages on my head and had to take some pain meds after that for a several days, and about 12 days later I came back to get the sutures removed- which was painless). I followed all of his instructions carefully and everything went pretty much as I expected. Overall, I would give Dr. Diep and his team the highest possible rating on 1) my experience of the procedure- I was very comfortable compared with the other procedures I'd had, 2) Suture removal and follow-up and 3) the RESULT which, of course, is the most important thing. The only drawback I can think of is that they couldn't accept a check for the final payment (not even a cashier's check), so I had to scramble at the last minute to raise my credit card limit--no big deal. I can't say enough about how good my hair looks now!
  19. I haven't asked Dr. Diep about it (i'm pretty upset and just want to move on, found better doctor. Dr. Nadimi). Haven't ready anything about it on this site either. I'm a little disappointed that this site has such a high recommendation for Diep. My donor area likely would be in much better shape today had I found Dr. Nadimi sooner.
  20. I’m Dr. Diep’s former patient, I’m not his rep or any other doctors rep for that matter. I work for this site, but I would like to make it clear that we don’t work for doctors or sell transplants. However, I will answer your question to the best of my ability, the truth is there is nothing universal about a persons donor. The train of thought has always been to only use hair that would be considered safe in a norwood 7. However, the vast majority of men will never reach a norwood 7 level of baldness. Some men never even reach norwood 5. Some men only have frontal hair loss their whole life. So, the donor zone should be treated for the individual. While, there is no crystal ball to know how far a patient will bald, there are some indicators that provide doctors the ability to make an educated guess. Age, family history, current balding pattern etc. Going high up on the sides can be disastrous for some and not for others, it’s a case by case basis, again depending on the aforementioned factors.
  21. Thanks Phil, I had around 5,200-5,300 grafts via FUE. Considering making it 6,000 😬 Thanks lasercap I will add that in the description. No I dont use finasteride, but I do use minoxidil and Azelaic acid along with keto shampoo. I think it’s done a good job preserving what I had left. I may have been technically a class 5, but the writing was on the wall I was headed towards Norwood 6 fast. It was particularly depressing for me, especially since I always took pride in my hair and constantly changed hairstyles. I’m just grateful I found this site and thankful to Dr. Diep, I’ve been given a second chance and hope my story can give others hope. Because I truly felt hopeless at the time.
  22. I have read a few times about punch size and specifically Dr. Diep using a larger one, has this ever been addressed by Dr. Diep or anyone else on this site?
  23. 4 days until month 9 and still not seeing much improvement. I still have to use hair fibers to make my hair look thicker on top....which defeats the purpose of getting a hair transplant in the first place. The studies I've read suggest that new hair stops growing at this point and the existing hairs begins to mature. This is pretty disheartening considering that you can clearly see my scalp. The results I'm seeing aren't the results I was promised by Dr. Diep, so he and his staff will have to provide satisfactory remedies if my hair looks like this at the one year mark....which I suspect it will.
  24. Haha. I had no idea how much you guys appreciated these updates, so now I'll definitely make a point to keep you guys updated. Are you satisfied with the density of your transplant? From the Dr. Diep videos I've seen, even the guys with seemingly perfectly results wish they had more grafts.
  25. Dr. Diep is excellent for afrocentric hair, I would also consult with Dr.Umar, both are in California, so if you’re in California it may be worth while.
