Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

Found 1,549 results

  1. This 40 year old patient had 3000 Follicular Unit Grafts transplanted to his frontal and vertex areas in one session. Patient was thrilled with his result .
  2. Thanks for your inputs Dr. Glenn, Garageland & chris39. I have a question on the precautions one should take while sleeping. what sleeping position is advisable when 1) staples are on, 2) the first 1-2 months, and 3) the next 4-6 months? I am a side sleeper by nature. I am worried whether sleeping straight/sideways would put pressure on the scar and make it stretch. Another option would be to angle your upper half of the body at 30-45 degrees and use a neck pillow to sleep. But I am worried whether this would cause the chin to chest tilt motion that one is asked to restrict.
  3. I went for Hair Transplant with Dr.Glenn Charles(Boca Raton) on 7/24. It has been wonderful experience so far. To be honest, I did my part of research before consulting him. And after reading blogs and consulting with few other HT surgeons I felt comfortable going ahead with Dr.Charles. Few things that I would like to share from my experience that : 1. During my first consultation, Dr.Charles didn't up-sell himself and honestly did the assessment. He didn't pushed me to come back to him, which made me fell comfortable. 2. Before HT Dr.Charles Patient Advisior was very helpful and able to answer all my questions /concerns over the phone and on the email. Not even one time I felt like I was being pushed over his staff member. I was very impressed by communication and able to address my concerns in very timely fashion 3. During day for surgery Dr.Glenn explained clearly the game plan and what was going to happen. 4. His surgical staff made me feel comfortable. And there were 5-6 staff members doing the microscope grafting. I believe that makes sure that more grafts survive. Staff was really good, informing constantly on the procedure. 5. Anesthesia part of little painful but i was informed before about it. Once local anesthesia was injected, after that it was relatively less painful. My heart rate went up little when I saw strip from my back on under microscope. I guess it was more my physiological reaction , seeing your own skin laying out. 6. Entire surgery took 6 hrs.. Watched two movies , lunch was provided .. 6. I was able to drive myself back after the op 7. Dr Glenn called me twice personally the same day to follow to make sure I was doing good. It was really nice of him doing that and made me comfortable, that I can reach out to him incase of any emergency or urgent question. 8. As I write this I'm in Day 6 today , it seems like receipt area is healing . Of course I'm little anxious to see how many grafts have survived and have I damaged any so far. I have been taking good precaution like not wearing hat, not going out except for walk in evening with my dog, washing hair with cup blow and gently patting shampoo on grafts .. So far I'm satisfied .. I'll keep ya'll posted on journey.. So far, I can say good work Dr.Charles and his staff. Forgot to mention Dr.Charles only charged me 2000 grafts and gave rest 116 grafts free.. I have been looking at mirror and curiously see how many incisions i have on my head
  4. I agree there is a lot of deceptive practice engaged in in the hair transplant business. That said, I still think this result is on the lower end of what should be expected. But he still has time to grow. What is more annoying is the playing around with photos to make them look better. Dr.Charles did not do that here, but other doctors do it regularly. Example- before photo from the front is bright and shows the head tilted downward. Then the after photo is darker with the head tilted upward. Or, the hair is wet in the before with no combing over and then dry with a lot of comb over in the after.
  5. Finally, some honesty with regards to expectations after 1 procedure. While everyone is going gaga over Aftermath's recent photos, the fact is the results Aftermath is currently posting are after 10 years, 4 surgeries, and ~$40,00 - $50,000. Thank you for the photos, Dr. Charles
  6. This 36 year old patient had 2000 Follicular Unit Grafts transplanted to his frontal area in one session. These photos are showing his 11 months post-op. Patient is very happy with his result.
  7. Great point Dr. Charles, sometimes it's not only about grafts but the size of the area that's being covered, also like you said hair diameter, that's why you see some guys get 6,000 grafts and look like they were never bald, and others get 6,000 and look like they're lacking density.
  8. Hi guys, I am 28 years old guy with frontal and temporal recession, started loosing hair 3 years back and wanted to stay ahead of the game. I have very thick and long hair and was able to hide my baldness any how by combing forward but didnt wanted to struggle anymore. Did my research for almost a year and talked to several physicians but finally choose Dr. Glenn Charles because of his good reputation and quality of work. I must tell he is a great man and will explain you every aspect of it, i was initially given an estimate of 2000-2300 grafts as per my expectations but on the day of surgery he suggested me to go for 2000 gragts to get optimal results. He explained me why i can't i get it done as per my expectation as it would very unatural and kind of female hairline. He did a dense packing in the marked area as you can view my pictures in my album. The procedure went very fine, although i was very sacred of the anesthesia procedure. The staff was very friendly and was talking to me all the time. I am healing fine and its just third day, sometimes i get little discomfert due to stiches but its ok, i recommend you to get a neck pillow for few days for sleeping. Please look at my pics and comment on the quality of work done by Dr. Glenn Charles Its a waiting game for me now and will keep you guys posted. I do recommend Dr. Glenn Charles for the procedure
  9. This 47 year old patient has 2100 Follicular Units transplanted in his frontal area in one session. Patient is very happy with his result. Photos are showing his one year post-op.
  10. This 60 year old patient had 2300 Follicular Units transplanted to his frontal and vertex areas in one session. Photos showing his before and six (6) months post-op. Patient is very happy with his result.
  11. So I had my first transplant March of 2012-about 1700 to the crown area. The growth was good, the coverage was a bit lacking, dang my thin hair..so I went back last week, wanted to thicken the crown and start on the hairline. We went with 1500 more grafts to the crown (Dr. Charles assured me that I had good donor hair and would have planty left over to continue the HT's if my hair loss continued to progress), and then start filling in the very front, 500 grafts..Will get more pics up soon, dealing with some shockloss in the back but not stressing over it. Just want my stitches out now, they are annoying as heck.. FIRST PHOTO-MARCH 2012,PRE-OP SECOND-MAY 2013 THIRD-IMMEDIATE POST-OP MAY 2013 FOURTH-IMMEDIATE POST-OP MAY 2013
  12. This 29 year old patient had 2500 Follicular Units transplanted to his frontal area in one session. Photos showing his before and 11 months post-op. Patient is excited about his result.
  13. I've had 2 crown HT's, totaling about 3200 grafts. Dr. Charles did a good job, but my hair is so fine it's had to really get great coverage. There's definitely more hair than when I started (see pics in my photo albums) but as you can see there is still a significant bald spot. The lighting in the pic sucks, but you can imagine what its like when there is full light. Still wearing a hat everywhere or using concealer if I have to look classy. With 3200 in the crown already, I don't think it would be wise to dedicate any more remaining grafts, just wondering what other options may exist...including maybe being happy with what I have, just hoped for a bit better coverage after all was said and done.
  14. Thanks for the replies, I really appreciate them. First off, congrats on moving past the "future" HT doc phase, Blake. I have considered SMP, and will look further into it, this may be the most cost effective and sensible solution. I would rather get a few more grafts there, but as mentioned, I don't want to throw all my available grafts at the crown if I may need them down the line if my front starts to go. I'm not in any hurry at this point and wondering if maybe a small BHT procedure would help, although the $$ issue is the main thing with that.at this point. I sent the pic to one of Dr. Charles's reps so maybe see hat happens with that too. Thanks again for all the help, this forum is a must for anyone considering a procedure of any kind.
  15. Gettinold, I also think that SMP can help in that area of scalp and you might even want to consider putting some beard grafts there to help manage your scalp donor. Even a scalp concealer will help a lot in case you want something more temporary that you can wash off verses SMP. Do you have any recession or thinning in the frontal zone? Because if you do start to lose there, you definitely will want some adequate scalp donor for that visually high impact zone. The work that you had done by Dr. Charles looks very good...
  16. This 47 year old patient had 1800 Follicular Units transplanted to her frontal area and 500 grafts to her eyebrows in one session. Photos showing her one year post-op. Patient is very happy with her result.
  17. Not to bore anyone to tears, but I thought I would just mention my journey leading up to the day last week when I visited Dr. Glenn Charles' Office in Boca Raton for my 1st FUT procedure and certainly to get peoples feedback based on the pics attached. It goes back to 1997 when I was a junior in college, having just turned 20 and one of my roommates noticed that my hair had somewhat thinned out. At the time I didn't think much of it, but as time progressed the thinning, especially in the frontal portion of my scalp had progressed, I became a bit more conscious of this issue. So around 2001, I went to see a specialist in NYC and he started me on Propecia, which I have taken ever since, although at times not religiously. I have never taken any other hair loss substance. Since then my hair loss somewhat stabilized that is up until a few months ago when I (and my wife) noticed some significant thinning. Some pre operation pics are attached. At that time I decided to begin researching the possibility of hair transplants. I had never really delved into the topic and the only thing I remember is seeing those doll-looking grafts of old. So I was definitely stunned with the level as to which the techniques had advanced and the results looked absolutely astonishing. I went to visit four different specialists, including Dr. Charles. Two providers I was less than impressed with, this included a small boutique dermatological laser clinic that used the Neograft machine, but otherwise did not do enough of these procedures to make me comfortable, and the other was Bosley. The people there were friendly enough but the reviews were less than stellar and their prices were simply illogical. I selected Dr. Charles because of the many positive reviews and results I was able to access through the Net and this site in particular, as well as the feeling I got from meeting him in person. Dr. Charles is just wonderful - extremely down to earth, knowledgable, frank, and patient in answering all of my questions. I had a tough time deciding between Dr. Charles and another provider where I live and for whom I have the utmost respect. Aside from what I just wrote, I selected Dr. Charles because I thought his pricing was fair in comparison to the level of expertise he brings to table, his staff was extremely nice and has worked with him for many years, and he did not expect me to shave the top of my scalp where he was implanting the grafts. My procedure was on Thursday Jan. 11th. Prior to that, Dr. Charles was kind enough to answer the myriad of questions that came to mind, and certainly as my nerves increased closer to the day of the procedure. He began by giving my something to calm me down and discussed the places in which he intended to implant the grafts. As you can see from the after photos, we selected the frontal third of my scalp. As for the procedure itself, the staff tried to make me feel as comfortable as possible. There are no two ways around it, the anesthetic shots in the sides and back of the head hurt like hell. It was not a fun 5 minutes and I quickly realized that I would not be a good hostage . The staff was very gracious and made sure to give my plenty of fluids. My recommendation to anyone is that the morning of your procedure you drink some OJ. Once that was over I didn't feel a thing. I just sat there watching Netflix. They ordered me lunch and by 2:30 I was out the door. Dr. Charles makes sure you leave his office with not only post-op instructions, but also antibiotics, painkillers, a bottle of saline spray and a bottle of copper peptide solution. Mind you, I didn't have to pay extra for any of these items. He also gave me his cell phone number and called me that night to make sure I was okay. The first night is a bit uncomfortable. Its tough to sleep and the stitches pull. But I have to say that its not really painful per se, just annoying. I took one painkiller that first night and, thereafter, I was fine with 2-3 Advil taken at night. At this point, the crusts are falling out and, unfortunately I am also experiencing some shedding of the hair I currently have. I know it was to be expected, but its annoying nonetheless. My hope is that this hair will eventually grow back along with the grafts. In my opinion, Dr. Charles did an amazing job with creating a densely packed hair line. He was able to get just below 1700 grafts in the session. It truly is an art form and I believe it is key to go to a surgeon who has done these procedures for a long time. Without an ounce of reservation, I would recommend Dr. Charles to anyone looking to have a hair transplant. Even though the tiny holes where the grafts are located look awkward, coupled with the pain and discomfort of at least the first 5 minutes of the procedure, you really have to look at the longer and bigger picture. And now the unbearable waiting game. I will try and keep this blog updated from time to time with new pics. It was also recommended that I start using Rogaine, at least for the first few months. I also decided to take Saw Palmetto and see if that does anything. Please feel free to contact me should you want to chat about the procedure. Good luck.
  18. This patient had 1500 Follicular Unit Extraction using the Robotic Revolution (ARTAS). These photos are his 8 months Post-Op. Patient is very happy with his result so far.

    Before/After Robotic Fue

    With Dr. Glenn Charles
  21. I live in the Tampa Bay Florida area, and chose Dr. Glenn Charles due to his great reviews on this site and elsewhere. I was considering someone local, but could not find any information on the surgeon (good or bad), so when Dr. Charles office indicated they would comp travel costs to the East Coast, it was an easy choice. (A little more per graft, but still well within the acceptable range, and with the added insurance of a highly regarded surgeon). I had approx 1850 FUT grafts in my crown area on January 3rd, so I'm 3 1/2 weeks into it. The procedure itself was about what I expected, perhaps less stressful and less painful. As others have stated, the worst part are the initial numbing shots, which pinched for a short time, a little more so closer to the ears, and about as uncomfortable as a blood lab test needle stick repeated over a few minutes across the donor region. The actual removal of the donor tissue was completely painless. The numbing shots on the top of the head not as sensitive as the donor region, and again the small incisions were painless save for a few that pinched and resulted in more numbing. The transplants were also painless. Overall, the process was pretty easy, i enjoyed the dialog I had with Dr. Charles and his support during the procedure. He kept me well informed during and after, making sure I was comfortable and well prepared for post op. First night was a little hard to sleep due to some head throbbing, but again probably less than expected. Did not take prescription pain medicine that night, nor afterward. No other pain that I remember other than a little sensitivity in the donor region when shampooing the first week. No noticeable scar in the donor region, and after 3 1/2 weeks I still have 80-90 percent of the transplants still protruding, and would bet some were growing. I've had occasional itching over the last few weeks, but that has been the worst of it. Still have some red spots, but scabs pretty much gone. Overall, a pleasant experience which I hope will give great results. I highly recommend Dr. Charles, and would not change anything about my experience (other than losing the hair in the first place).
  22. Just had 2000 Grafts done by Dr. Glenn Charles and the experience was the best it could be. I was very nervous about the whole thing and almost cancelled because i have never had anything like this done before. His staff was very professional the office was very clean and overall the experience was fantasic, i would recommend Dr. Charles to anyone looking into getting a hair transplant. I am healing very well amd resultes look great. He is a caring Dr. who also gave me his cell # in case i need to contact him for anything. Dr. Glenn Charles is great and his work is amazing!! I will be posting pictures soon on the work he did for me, but once again great experience, amazing staff and overall it was painless! Thank you Dr. Charles for making this a wonderful experience for me. if anyone has any questions or would like to discuss anything about the process feel free to emial me post a comment. A little about myself I am 37 years old & had a receding hairline and it was really bothering me but after extensive research I found Dr. Charles and could not be happier with the results, he is an amazing surgeon and great person.
