Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. I went with Dr. David Josephitis of Shapiro Medical Group in Minnesota. Photos are 19 days p/o under bright lights after my first post-op ocean scuba dive. (Hat on religiously before and after I go underwater to protect from sun) It looked basically like this when I got a back-and-sides trim only a day after the staples came out (day 11). I decided to book my operation sort of last minute so I was worried I didn't prepare enough by growing out the donor beforehand. Was worried I was going to have a big smiley back there for awhile. It didn't seem to matter. I can feel little hairs near where the scar is starting to grow, either from shaving near the area or the closure method, not sure. Will likely give it another small boost when that's mature. I still am sweating if the 2675 grafts were enough to fix the crop circle that is my vertex/crown (fingers crossed) but feeling very positive about how my donor area looks. This is around the length I wore it before the op and plan to afterwards. The only (temporary) regret I have about choosing FUT is that I kinda wish I could buzz it for the regrowth phase and let my crown match the surrounding areas. It's gonna look funny as hell for a while. 🤷‍♂️
  2. Thank you for the suggestions everyone. Thank you for the suggestions Wazam. I heard about Shapiro group. But there are 3 names that come up. "Dr. David Josephitis, Ron and Paul Shapiro. I assume all of them are equally well reputed? I will tell my bro to try and consult with Dr Konior also.
  3. Dear Forum Members, As you know, members of the Coalition of Independent Hair Restoration Physicians have to meet extremely demanding standards and have an outstanding reputation for producing only the best results. Thus, we would like your input on the potential Coalition membership for Dr. David Josephitis. To view our demanding standards for the Coalition, click here. Dr. David Josephitis works with both Dr. Ron Shapiro and Dr. Paul Shapiro and has been presenting examples of his work and results and contributing on this forum for over a year. Patient members of this community have been very impressed by his results and thus, we feel that he should be considered for Coalition membership. Dr. Josephitis provides both FUT/strip and FUE and performs all the extractions himself on every single FUE procedure at the clinic. This includes Dr. Ron Shapiro and Dr. Paul Shapiro's FUE cases. He is a board certified diplomate of the ABHRS (American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery) and has earned fellowship status at the ISHRS (International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery). Dr. Josephitis is highly respected by his peers and his patients. He became interested in performing hair transplant surgery in medical school when he was introduced to the procedure by Coalition member Dr. Glenn Charles. He is also a hair transplant patient and received 1800 plus follicular units to refine his hairline. Dr. Josephitis has the staff and experience to perform densely packed sessions exceeding 3000 grafts when appropriate for the patient via strip and up to 2000 grafts a day utilizing the FUE (follicular unit extraction) procedure. He uses all the latest techniques and technology including PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma), ACell, microscopes and more. Grafts are dipped in ACell for all FUE procedures and when appropriate, PRP is applied to the recipient sites in order to facilitate optimal growth. Dr. David Josephitis uses a combination of FUE extraction devices including the Cole sharp punch, a manual punch and Coalition member Dr. Devroye's oscillating punch depending on the patient. Dr. Josephitis is very hands on and works with between 5 to 10 experienced technicians averaging 10 years of experience on every strip procedure depending on the size of the session. During FUE, he only requires 2 or 3 technicians to assist him with the procedure. Over the last year, Dr. Josephitis has presented several examples of his procedure and recent results on this forum. Dr. Josephitis' Recent Patient and Surgical photos can be found below: 1324 Grafts 6 Month Progress Patient Posted Result with Dr. Josephitis 2362 Grafts with Dr. Josephitis Strip Result 2038 Grafts with Dr. Josephitis 2194 Grafts with Dr. Josephitis FUE Result 2013 Grafts with Dr. Josephitis Strip Result FUE Study - Comparing .9mm Sharp vs Dull Punch 3314 Grafts with Dr. Josephitis Strip Result 3535 Grafts with Dr. Josephitis Strip Result Given Dr. Josephitis' credentials and dedication to advanced surgical hair restoration, I believe he should be considered for the Coalition. To view our demanding standards for the Coalition, click here. We welcome all input and comments regarding his potential inclusion. To view additional examples of his patient results, visit the "Results Posted by Leading Hair Restoration Clinics" forum. We look forward to your feedback. Bill
  4. Shapiro Medical is pleased to present a 1 yr result from Dr. David Josephitis. This patient wanted at least 3000 of 4201 grafts to address the frontal half with much lighter coverage to the back half. Multiple sessions were planned from the beginning to address total recipient area of over 200 cm2. This patient will schedule another session to address the crown soon. For now he can enjoy this stand alone FUT procedure that gives him a natural result.
  5. The first World FUE Institute Workshop put on by the World FUE Institute (WFI) took place in the Canary Islands, Spain on Nov. 11-13, 2016.This newly formed society consists of hair transplant physicians from across the globe that place special emphasis on the advancement of FUE.The Institute exists to further the study of FUE and to form an educational space for physicians to further the field.Dr. Jose Lorenzo of Spain and Dr. Koray Erdogan of Turkey are the current president and vice president of the organization. They worked tirelessly to put together an excellent educational offering.Drs. Alejandro Chueco, Antonio Ruston, Alex Ginzburg, Bijan Feriduni, Hussain Rahal, Emorane Lupanzula, and Ron Shapiro were the other members of the faculty who each delivered countless lectures and performed surgeries in the afternoons. The location was ideal for the meeting and took place on the Spanish island of Tenerife off the coast of Africa. The weather was comfortable and the beaches along the coast were beautiful. There was a good turnout for a first meeting with around 50 physicians in attendance.I was honored to have attended and to have been asked to perform one of the live surgeries during the workshop. Day 1 started with an incredible amount of activity. In the morning there were a tremendous amount of educational lectures aimed at not only the beginning FUE surgeon but also those more advanced. There were lectures about the various types of FUE devices currently available as well as those being developed.Dr. Chueco discussed the different types of individual punches and how one can differentiate one size and type from another. Those in attendance were introduced to a new and exciting FUE device from Dr. Trivillini called the Mamba. It uses suction to stabilize the graft and also vibration to free it from the underlying tissues.Dr. Shapiro discussed the new motorized flat device from Dr. Jean DeVroye called the WAW.This device marries the ease and precision of a sharp punch with the transection-limiting nature of a blunt punch, giving a large percentage of high quality grafts. Drs. Erdogan and Lorenzo discussed a new topic in FUE planning called “Coverage Value.” This topic is sure to become very common for all FUE physicians in their surgical planning for the patient in the near future. The idea here is that the patient prior to surgery will be assigned a number based on their hair caliber, density and area of donor.Using this number (coverage value), the physician can determine how many procedures need to be done in a certain area to give a desired effect. Also, and just as importantly, the patient can find out how many grafts can safely be transplanted in their lifetime. There were talks given later that morning concerning the best way to place FUE grafts. Some physicians use forceps while an ever growing number of others are using implanters. The pros and cons of each were discussed. Finally, a description of the various types of FUE devices (manual, motorized, flat) was given prior to the actual live surgical observation. The first afternoon consisted of one case performed by Dr. Lorenzo. The interesting aspect of this case was that he used 4 different types of FUE devices on the same patient. He used the manual, Mamba, blunt, and WAW (DeVroye) systems. Day 2 again started very early with lectures. The first lectures from Dr. Ruston discussed ways of increasing the speed and efficiency of FUE extractions.Later some lectures went over potential complications of doing very large sessions (gigasessions of 4000+). Some of the talks dealt with the rising wave of poor quality work that is being done by inexperienced clinics throughout the world. There were a few lectures on how to tackle these cases and how to go about correcting poor work that was done.FUE into scars was a topic covered as well as using SMP (scalp micropigmentation) into areas. The afternoon consisted of 4 different patients performed by 4 different surgeons. The attendees were able to move about from room to room asking the various surgeons specific questions along the way.Dr. Ginzburg used his cordless motorized sharp device and placed those grafts with implanters.A manual technique with the patient in the upright seated position was demonstrated by Dr. Erdogan. He followed this by showing his new device called the “Keep” to assist in placing the grafts with forceps.Dr. Ruston used a motorized sharp system to extract while showing how he does the stick-and-place for placing the grafts. Finally, Dr. Feriduni also used a manual device with both an oscillation and non-oscillation technique to remove the grafts. Day 3 started with a discussion of the ethical way of performing hair transplantation on patients.Physicians also heard a lecture by Dr. Ruston about the “Red Flags,” or things that all surgeons need to be on the lookout for to avoid performing surgery on a poor candidate. There were also a few interesting lectures about body hair transplantation.Beard and body hair were discussed as alternate sources of donor in addition to the scalp.A specialized technique for eyelash transplantation was demonstrated by Dr. Feriduni. Poor growth and the depletion of the donor area was a topic of discussion as well. There was talk about ways to improve growth and to diminish poor yield in all FUE patients.Dr. Shapiro delivered his popular hairline talk showing the proper planning and placement of a natural-appearing hairline.Other physician speakers discussed their different techniques in designing an age-appropriate hairline. The final day of the workshop ended with another 4 surgeries performed by 4 surgeons. Dr. Lorenzo demonstrated the manual sharp technique on his patient. These grafts were placed with implanters which is common in his clinic.Dr. David Josephitis demonstrated the new WAW flat motorized device in another patient. This new device contains a foot pedal with adjustable speed and oscillation which allows the physician to tailor the speed and movement of the punch to minimize the transection rate and maximize the number of quality grafts.Drs. Lupanzula and Cueco demonstrated their techniques followed by the use of implanters for their cases. Overall, the first workshop of the WFI was a success.Ideas were openly shared in a friendly and collegial atmosphere. Many physicians walked away with new ideas and techniques to try out in their own clinics.
  6. Here is Dr David Josephitis's 1 year result of a happy patient who had 3130 grafts to address his Norwood class V hair loss.
  7. kojac, Everything looks just like I would expect it to for only 1 month. Hair shedding typically occurs between 4 and 6 weeks so you're not out of the woods yet. But maybe you'll get lucky and be one of the rare few who keep their transplanted hair and moves right into the growth phase. I'm pretty sure David, our Associate Publisher experienced that. Postoperative redness is normal and can last several months depending on the person. Skin color and complexion plays a role in that as well. For example, those with a paler/fairer complexion may experience more redness than someone with darker skin. And as Dr. Josephitis said, minoxidil or even some medicated shampoos like Nizoral can irritate the scalp somewhat right after surgery causing extended redness. So an prolonged sun exposure which is why it's best to avoid long term sun contact with your scalp. Best wishes, Bill
  8. Guys, I appreciate everyone's input on Dr. David Josephitis' potential Coalition membership. It's obvious based on the replies we received on this forum topic and the ones we received privately that including him in the Coalition is a no-brainer. He has clearly developed a stellar reputation online for being amongst the best and is well respected by his peers and patients. Thus, we are pleased to announce Dr. David Josephitis as our newest member of the Coalition of Independent Hair Restoration Physicians. To see Dr. Josephitis' Coalition profile, click here. Let's welcome him to the community and the Coalition! Best wishes, Bill
  9. Esrec, do you feel Dr Ron Shapiro should have his Coalition status questioned? Isn't Dr. Josephitis a new doctor attached to Shaprio Medical ? He has no results or established credibility. You are all over Feller, are you going to ask your doctor whats up and make him come online to answer to you? Here's the link to Dr. Ron Shapiro's new doctor. See for yourself- Dr. David Josephitis - (sorry I don't know how to make it into a link. Maybe a moderator can help). Isn't it hypocritical that you only single out feller and not your own doctor when its a clear thing hes doing the same thing? How about when he brought on Dr. Paul ? How do you think Dr. Paul learned? Think doing HT transplants was just uploaded to him over night? Or did his brother teach him on his actual patients like an internship? Wasn't he attached to his brother with no results or credibility? Should Dr. Ron's Coalition status be questioned for that now? are you going to call for that? Here is Dr. Paul's page on the SMG website. In the second video he says his brother taught him, thought he was good, and took him into the practice. Should Dr. Ron's Coalition status been taken taken away then because the introduction of his brother diluted the practice? He had no results and no credibility. Here's the link- Paul Shapiro, MD - You think Dr. Paul learned how to do HTs by magic? He learned on his brothers patients with his brother guiding him. Did he get special consent to do this? How about Dr. Josephitis ? If you want FUE and you want only Dr. Ron to do it, will he? In the past he had a technician doing the fue extractions. not a doctor. a technician. was the technician a coalition member by backdoor proxy? did smg offer a discount for the non doctor fue technician? who are you to question a doctor like feller, a doctor you don't know and never met, but not make the same public demands of your own doctor? Here's a link to an fue result by smg. who did the work? and I see that the shapiro medical team was given the credit. there is dr josephitis in the team, but hes not a coalition member. is he taking credit for this fue? did he do it? was this or is this a deception that the moderators should be informed of? Did the fue patient pay less because dr josphitis was on the team? You asked this of feller, why not of your own doctor? http://www.hairrestorationnetwork.com/eve/182143-shapiro-medical-1yr-fue-result-matt-zupan.html Stig you demand to know how feller trains his people. you aren't ever going to go to him for a surgery but you take every shot at him you can. shouldnt you be asking Dr. Ron how he trained dr paul and now dr. josephitis? shouldn't you ask if he sits there and watches his technician extracting fues with a magnifier? Is that what hes doing with dr. Josephitis now? you never seem interested in how he trains his new doctors. but you're all over feller. Bill is right, people come on here just to give dr feller a hard time and you are the top of the list. If you are going to make such demands of feller, why not make them of dr shapiro. you love him so much you push him everytime anyone asks for a recommendation, shouldn't you assure everyone he's training his new people properly and answer to you on demand?
  10. Thanks, Arrie! This hairline was a bit of a challenge because the pt really wanted something a bit "edgy" and it is our policy to keep them natural as if they were created by nature. All of our hairlines are created by either Dr. Ron Shapiro, Dr. Paul Shapiro, or Dr. David Josephitis. I replicated their visions. Art + Science
  11. From the link: So I guess they are still using the Artas, which I thought they had abandoned. For manual extractions, this is who the Shapiro's employ: Dr. David Josephitis
  12. Hello everyone, I'm happy to start posting results of our physician Dr. David Josephitis. Dr. Joe has been working at Shapiro Medical for the last two years and is well liked by all the staff. He's very easy to work with and has a great bed-side manner. His patients like him a lot. Here is one example of Dr. Joe's work:
  13. Hello! I want to start off by saying this is a wonderful forum with such helpful members! I am trying to find the best hair restoration doctor for my uncle in Seattle and was hoping for some recommendations? I've already tried my best convincing him to see Dr. Hasson, Dr. Wong, and Dr. Steven Gabel. Unfortunately, he's not willing to make the extra trip...at all. I've also eliminated Dr. Mangubat and Bosley from my choices after reading some bad reviews of them on this forum. So far, I'm debating between Dr. Robert Niedbalski and Dr. Brian Goertz? I am actually leaning towards Dr. Brian Goertz having seeing he used to be a part of this community. Though I know he was taken off for good reason and has a rather bitter relationship with this community, is he my uncle's best bet in the Seattle area? If you know of any better doctors in Seattle or near Seattle please let me know! Also what do you guys think about this local clinic, "Advanced Hair Restoration" : The surgeons there are Dr. Barry Weiss, Dr. David Josephitis and Dr. Dennis Watkins. Any of these names sound familiar? If not, is their "advanced" technology at least good? And is it better than Dr. Goertz's technology? Last one! Have you heard of Dr. Stern? Ahh, I feel so lost! Thank you so much!! Kristin
  14. Here is a video of me talking about my experience with hair transplant surgery. I figure this is more personal than typing it all out. The surgery took place in Tulsa Oklahoma on Tuesday 8/14/12 at Hair Restoration Center. The surgeon was Dr. David Josephitis. I will be updating as the healing process continues.
  15. Dr. Simmons literally walked out of the office one morning Feb 4th, 2008 (I remember cause it was my birthday) and quit when we had a surgery scheduled. Only on his good days(he's got issues) he is a decent hair transplant surgeon. He now works at hair club in Blommington if you're trying to find him. MHR now has Dr. David Josephitis who is AWESOME. He cares about his patients does what is best for them. He listens to what you want and if he can't give you want you want he'll tell you. Dr. Joe has had to "fix" Dr. Simmons work at least 12 times. Almost every patient that has had surgery with Dr. Simmons and then comes back and has one again with Dr. Josephitis says that the experience is 100% better. The best thing to do is to visit every surgeon and ask questions. Also remember that a surgeons staff does 80% of the work. They cut the grafts, they count the grafts, and they place the grafts. So also check out what kind of the staff the surgeon has. So if the surgeon is great the staff could be not so great. Ask how many years they've been doing it. A hair tech can't be fully trained unless they've been doing it at least a year.
