Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. I contacted Dr. Damkerng Pathomvanich at Bumrungrad Hospital. They wanted $50 for the online consultation. When I told them no, they asked that I just send some pictures, which I did. I was then quoted 250 baht per graft for 2500. That's just about the same price as Dr. Diep here in the Silicon Valley, which is only 20 min drive for me. Dr. Damkerng price is outrageous, and ridiculous. Price is really not a factor as much as quality for me. But I'm not keen on getting scammed either.
  2. 43-year-old Asian male who has diffused thinning hair from front toward the crown with some persistent frontal forelock as in Norwood VI. The recipient area measured 140 cm2. He underwent combo FUT+ FUE = 4,454 grafts (1-hair=1,160 grafts, 2-hairs=2,327 grafts , 3-hairs=967 grafts, total 8,555 hairs) transplanted to the entire recipient area. Below are his before and 1 year and 8 months after with good result.
  3. 49 year-old Thai male who has diffused thinning hair from front toward the crown for 5 years. His donor area look good. He was on Finasteride and topical Minoxidil with minimal improvement. He underwent FUT 2,939 grafts (1-hair=1,035 grafts , 2-hairs=1,510 grafts , 3-hairs=394 grafts total 5,237 hairs) at front and crown. Below are his before and 8 months after with good result from hair transplantation and medication. He has changed from topical to oral Minoxidil and Finasteride post-op.
  4. 37 year-old male South East Asian who has receding hairline to mid scalp measured 55 cm2. He underwent hair transplantation FUT 2,321 grafts (1-hair graft = 938 grafts, 2-hairs graft =1,160 grafts, 3-hairs graft = 223 grafts) a total of 3,927 hairs . Below are before and one year post op with good result and no complication.
  5. MVL is a 41 year-old East Asian who has receding hairline and diffused thinning hair from front to the crown. His hair is black, coarse, density = 64 FU/ cm2 . The recipient area measured 70 cm2 to mid scalp. He underwent a combo FUT+FUE with short FUT scar, FUT or linear excision yielded 2,105 grafts (1-hair = 805 grafts, 2-hairs = 1,111 grafts, 3-hairs = 189 grafts) total hair = 3,594 from FUT. FUE using WAW 0.95 mm, yielded 946 grafts (1-hair = 257 grafts, 2-hairs = 504 grafts, 3-hairs = 185 grafts) total 1,820 hairs. A grand total of 3,051 grafts or 5,414 hairs were transplanted. Below are before and 11 months after with good result.
  6. JR is a 36 years old Asian male who have balding at crown and diffused thinning hair at forelock with retain frontal hairline. He has an average donor density of 66 follicle/cm2. The recipient area measured 139 cm2. He underwent FUE 2,518 grafts (1 hair=336 grafts, 2-hairs=1,133 grafts, 3-hairs =903 grafts, 4-hairs=146 grafts) total 5,895 hairs. Below are his pre and 10 months after with good result. He will return in the future to add on density.
  7. TS is a 34 years old white male who have receding fronto temporal hair line and wanted to restore his hair line by FUE. He has straight, black hair with good density. He underwent FUE with WAW 0.95 mm. 2,009 grafts (1-hair=228 grafts, 2-hairs=1,295 grafts, 3-hairs=473 grafts, 4-hairs=13 grafts) roughly 4,289 hairs were transplanted. Below are his pre and 6 months post op with good result.
  8. This is a 39 years old white male who has hair loss from the front to mid scalp and balding at crown as in Norwood IV. He has an average donor hair. He underwent hair transplant FUT 3,806 grafts ( 1-hair=967 grafts, 2-hairs=2,178 grafts, 3-hairs=661 grafts) roughly 7,306 hairs, 2,706 grafts were placed at front and 1,100 grafts at crown. Below is before and one year after with slightly wet hair to be able to comb backward since the dry hair is looking quite thick. He is happy with the result for now and wanted to come back to add on the density in the future.
  9. Dear forum members, As many of you know, we gather as much information as possible about a physician, their staff, technique and track record before they are even considered for recommendation on the Hair Transplant Network. Part of our review process involves getting input from patients and the members of this forum community. To learn more about this review process, click here. We’d like to gather your input and opinions regarding the potential recommendation of Dr. Kongkiat Laorwong of Thailand on the Hair Transplant Network. At this time, Dr. Laorwong is only being considered for recommendation, not the Coalition. To see our standards for recommendation and how it differs from Coalition membership, click here. Dr. Kongkiat Laorwong has over 10 years of experience and was trained and performed his fellowship under former Coalition member Dr. Damkerng Pathomvanich. Dr. Laorwong performs both FUT and FUE hair transplant surgery exclusively at his clinic Bangkok, Thailand. Dr. Laorwong has the staff and experience to perform large, densely packed sessions of follicular unit grafting exceeding 3000 grafts when appropriate for the patient and operates on only 1 patient per day. While the number of follicular units Dr. Laorwong harvests in a single day via FUE may be smaller, patients often return for multiple days to achieve their goals. With FUE, a single session can extend multiple consecutive days. In 2016, Patrick Hennessey, Founder and Publisher of the Hair Transplant Network visited Dr. Kongkiat Laorwong and observed his surgical technique at his clinic in Thailand. Typically, Pat presents the highlights from visits to leading hair transplant clinics in the "Visits to Leading Hair Transplant Clinics" forum category however, the files and photos pertaining to his visit were regrettably damaged during his travels. However, Pat was very impressed with Dr. Laorwong and felt that he was very dedicated to state of the art FUT/strip and FUE hair transplant surgery. Dr. Laorwong specializes in FUT/Strip, FUE, BHT, eyebrow transplantation, mustache and beard restoration and scar repair. He also provides non-surgical hair loss solutions including PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) injections, finasteride, 5% minoxidil and laser therapy via the laser cap. Dr. Kongkiat uses minimally invasive techniques and all the latest tools such as the trichophytic closure, microscopic dissection via strip, dense packing, tiny incisions as small as 0.8mm depending on the graft size and patient. During FUE (follicular unit extraction), Dr. Laorwong uses various sharp punches with a Vortex motorized hand piece for ease of usability, precision, speed and to maximize control while minimizing transection. Some extraneous tissue is left on the grafts to maximize survival rates and reduce damage during handling. Lion implanters or forceps are used to implant the harvested follicular units into pre-made tiny incisions. Grafts are only kept outside of the body in a chilled intracellular storage, HTK solution for 2 to 6 hours depending on the size of the session. Grafts are transplanted long before desiccation (dehydration) or damage of any kind can occur to the follicular units. Dr. Laorwong provides both FUT via strip surgery and FUE as he feels both extraction techniques have a valuable place in hair transplant surgery. He believes what's good for one patient isn't always best for another. Dr. Kongkiat Laorwong is dedicated to creating natural hairlines using only the finest single haired follicular units for placement. Dr. Laorwong densely packs up to 50 follicular units per square centimeter (FU/cm2) when appropriate. Given Dr. Kongkiat Laorwong's vast experience in performing both state of the art FUT and FUE and providing only the best results, in my opinion, he should be considered for recommendation. Over the last several months, Dr. Laorwong has presented several examples of his FUT/strip and FUE procedure and recent results on this forum. A sample of Dr. Laorwong's Recent Patient and Surgical photos can be found below: 2502 Grafts Via Strip 3641 Grafts Via Strip 3645 Grafts Via Strip 2584 Grafts Via Strip 1779 Grafts Via Strip 3627 Grafts Via Strip 3093 Grafts Via Strip 3070 Grafts Via Strip 3000 Grafts FUE 3417 Grafts FUE 1800 Grafts FUE You can find additional examples of his work by visiting the “Results Posted by Leading Hair Transplant Clinics” forum and by using the “search” feature. I welcome input and comments from forum members regarding his potential recommendation. To view our standards for recommendation, click here. Onwards and Upwards, Bill
  10. Does anybody have any experience of Dr. Damkerng Pathomvanich in bangkok?
  11. A 54-year-old Caucasian male who had extensive hair loss from front to crown. His hair is coarse, wavy and gray. He has very good donor hair density (87 follicular units per square centimeter) and good scalp laxity. He underwent 1 session of FUT, the amount of grafts is show below; 1-hair = 366 grafts 2 hair = 1933 grafts 3 hair = 1,232 grafts 4 hair = 384 grafts A total of 3,915 grafts (9,464 hairs) were transplanted at the front towards the back until the grafts were run out. Below are photos of before and after surgery (4 months & 2 weeks). He has very small donor scar. The patient is very satisfied with the result and he will undergo another session to fill in the crown. We will keep you update of 1-year result of this patient.

His donor hair density was 81 FU/sq. cm. His scalp laxity was good. He underwent 1 session of FUT, the amount of grafts is shown below; 1-hair grafts: 506 grafts (506 hairs) 2-hair grafts: 1535 grafts (3070 hairs) 3-hair grafts: 676 grafts (2028 hairs) A total of 2,717 grafts (5604 hairs) were transplanted at the front and both temples. Below are the pictures of before and after surgery (1 year & 1 month). The patient is very satisfied with the result.
  13. The journey is scheduled... I've booked my FUT procedure with Dr. Pathomvanich in Bangkok for June 1st! I'm excited, but also nervous, which is normal for any upcoming surgical procedure, I suppose. I chose Thailand for two reasons, I have a Thai wife, and I'm familiar with the high level of service in private healthcare in Thailand. I originally booked an FUT procedure with another Thai surgeon, but after some internet research (on this site) I decided to cancel and switch to Dr. Pathomvanich. However, he was fully booked. With two tickets to Thailand already purchased, I found myself in a fix; stay with the surgeon with bad internet reviews, or cancel the whole trip. I caught a lucky break when one of Dr. Pathomvanich's other patients cancelled and opened a near perfect timeslot on June 1st. I'll have 10 days in BKK to heal before I head back to the U.S. on June 11 Question: if I have the surgery on June 1st, do you think I'll have time to travel in Thailand after sufficient healing, or will I be bound to the hotel room the entire 10 days? From the photos I sent Dr. Pathomvanich, he suggest 3500 grafts, which may change after our initial consultation on May 31. I've gotten two estimates here in the US, one suggested 2500 grafts, and the other (Bosley) 3500. My hair is thin, and low density, in my opinion. I'll post some pics soon. June 2nd, 2017 The hair transplant was a success and Dr. Pathomvanich was able to get more grafts than his estimate. The total figures final were: Total Grafts - 3623 Total Hairs - 7486 1 hair grafts - 425 2 hair grafts - 2467 3 hair grafts - 698 4 hair grafts - 0 In the US I was told 3500 would be high, and to expect 2500-3000. My overall impression of the clinic and staff was excellent all around. Dr. Pathomvanich is easy-going and professional. His demeanor is such that you immediately feel at ease in his presence, and that you've made the right choice in physicians. On surgery day, the staff of 12 is full of hustle and bustle, but all the while you're taken care of in a warm and friendly way. Once the procedure begins, everyone knows their tasks and they get down to business quickly. Regarding the procedure itself, at no time did I feel anything that crossed the threshold of actual pain. There were a couple of moments of slight discomfort from from the local anesthetic being injected, but no worse than a tetanus shot. I was given a couple of sleeping pills (Valium) and found myself nodding off from time to time, which helped the 8 hours pass quickly. If at any time you want to take a break, go to bathroom, or eat a sandwich, you need only ask. In fact, if you don't ask, they'll ask you if you want a break. During the procedure, on the first break, they take you to the different work stations and show you what everyone's doing. You can tell his staff love their work as much as he does, and they are eager to share their tasks with you. I was a little groggy, so I didn't ask many questions, but it really is fascinating work they do. I took a taxi back to my hotel, and while the traffic took a while, I wasn't out of it and didn't fall asleep. Back in the room I showered (not my head), and picked up some to go food around the corner. I was anticipating a lot of pain when the anesthetic wore off, but nothing like that occurred. I took the ibuprofen, anti-biotic, anti-inflammatory, and sleeping pill and went right to sleep. Some slight discomfort, but nowhere near what I had been expecting. The next morning, 5:00AM to be exact, I woke up from a sound sleep and had forgotten all about the surgery. I soon touched my head and remembered, then sprang out of bed to check the mirror. No blood, just redness and a little swelling As planned, I went back to Dr. Path's office for a shampooing and post op visit. All good so far. Now it's the second night after the operation and I feel good, but a slight amount of pain. I haven't taken any ibuprofen since morning though. I'll take one, with a sleeping pill, and call it a night. One more thing, the head band. I've been wearing it, and I do notice some puffiness above the band, but none below. Although, the nurse told me tomorrow and the next day the puffiness will increase, but then decrease permanently after that.
  14. Hi All, I just wanted to share my experiences with my recent hair transplant as a way of giving back to the community. I first noticed my hair thinning about a year ago. And I decided to do something about it before it was clearly obvious. My hair was thinning around the front of my head. Fortunately, I have thick hair so it is not as noticeable. In fact, my kids said they never noticed it. But if you view my head from top, you can see the contrast between the rear and front of my head. The front was clearly showing a lot more skin. I decided to go with Dr. Path because he has a solid reputation and I enjoy eating the food in Bangkok. The relatively low cost of accommodations in Bangkok helped my decision too. I stayed at the Abloom Serviced Apartments, which is just a minute or two walk from the nearest BTS, and one stop away from Dr. Path's office. In retrospect, I should have stayed near the Asok BTS station as I had most of my meals at the Terminal 21 shopping center. I watched a movie there too. Before my initial meeting with Dr. Path, I had already decided to go with fue as it seemed less painful. But after consulting with the doctor, I went with fut instead. My main reason was that I would not have to shave the back of my head to harvest hair. With the fut method, my existing hair would cover the donor area very easily. Thus, I could be in public much sooner. Besides, I look terrible with short hair. After the consultation, Dr. Path showed me a chart with the density numbers and grafts required to achieve the density and the costs. For me, he recommended somewhere between 40% and 45% density. I can't remember the specific costs for the corresponding densities. But asked if I could get 2000 grafts, which would put me somewhere in between the 40% and 45%. I chose 2000 because that was the range I felt comfortable paying. On the consultation day, they also tested me for HIV and Hepatitis. The next day, I had the surgery and it lasted a little less than 6 hours. The entire operation was pretty much pain free. I read in other posts, the shots would be painful. But even that was not very painful. In comparison, a shot from a dentist would feel much more painful. I was given a Valium just prior to the operation. When I woke up, they were still working on me for maybe an hour or two? During the entire operation, a piece of cloth covered my eyes. But I could hear the two females working on me and Dr. Path in the background as well. I suppose he was supervising at the time. Which is fine with me. I can't imagine any one person doing 1800 grafts by himself. Dr. Path also was kind enough to not shave the recipient area. I also liked that the hairline he gave me followed the contour of my existing hairline. That is, it is not a smooth line. I thought this made my hairline look more natural. Turns out only 1800 grafts were needed and the office gave me a refund accordingly. After the operation, Dr. Path said I was a bleeder and had to inject something to prevent me from bleeding as much. He also said some of my grafts were very slippery and thus it took a bit longer than anticipated. He wanted me to check my cholesterol level to see if there is a correlation. When my wife took a look at me immediately after the operation, she said my face looked slightly swollen despite the headband Dr. Path already put on me to minimize the swelling. From what I understand, saline is injected into the scalp to raise the skin and make it easier or safer to work on the recipient area. Thus, the swelling. The staff then gave me strong and mild pain killers for pain, Valium to help me sleep that night, about a weeks worth of antibiotics to prevent infection, and a solution called ATP to help the grafts survive in the new area. I took a pain killer the first night. But after that, I did not require any more. I did not take the Valium either. The ATP solution had to be sprayed on the recipient area every 2 hours for the first day and then every 4 hours the second day. Thank god my wife was around to help remind me. Yes. I had to wake up every two hours to spray the recipient area. I thought I would be recuperating in my apartment for at least the next few days. But I was out and about the day after the surgery wearing a hat to cover the headband Dr. Path said I had to wear for one week to prevent the swelling from traveling down my face. He even showed me pictures of other patients with swollen faces. On the fifth day, I was tired of wearing the headband to sleep. The discomfort was like pressing on a bruise. So I went to sleep without the headband and when I woke up my eyes were so swollen it looked like I was a loser in a boxing match. Fortunately, I put cold compresses in the affected area, and the swelling was barely noticeable. As a joke, I told my wife "you should look at the other guys I beat up" as a response to my swelling. So apparently, the saline solution injected into the recipient area will naturally travel down from gravity unless I wear a headband. If I recall correctly, I stopped wearing the headband on day six with very minor swelling on the cheeks. I guess that is how long it took my lymphatic system to absorb the saline injected into my scalp. As suggested by Dr. Path, I washed my hair very gently twice a day with baby shampoo. On the fifth day, almost all the scabs washed off the recipient area. It has been about 3.5 weeks now since my HT with Dr. Path, and I am really happy thus far. Surprisingly, I have not experienced any noticeable shock loss yet. In addition, because Dr. Path did not shave the recipient area and my scalp is thinning versus bald, nobody can tell I had a HT. In fact, it already looks better than before because the previously thinned area now has fuzzy black hair. With instructions from the Dr. Paths staff, my wife was able to cut the sutures from the donor area at our home, which saves me time and money for a doctor's visit. The donor area felt slightly uncomfortable for a couple of weeks. It felt like a bruise would feel. But now, I can barely feel any discomfort back there at all. I also did not get any pimples at all in the recipient area. So overall, this has been very easy operation for me with essentially no complications. While I have no experience with other doctors. I must say I am quite happy with Dr. Path and his staff. As a side note, they all speak very good English. I even told one nurse her English was so good she sounds like she was born in the States. Btw. I would recommend taking probiotics after you finish taking the antibiotics because the antibiotics kill the good as well as the bad bacteria in your gut. And your gut is a large part of your immune system.
  15. I found Dr Pathomvanich in Thailand does very good work, has very reasonable rates and well worth the overseas trip. Quite confident that one single 1500 graft surgery with him a year ago will be enough to satisfy me after a few earlier disappointing results. Life is short and the difference a successful surgery can make is transformational.
  16. Warning: The pictures are of very high resolution. I wanted to leave it as high-res as possible so that you could see more details. Dear friends, First of all, thank you for this wonderful site. It has allowed me to glean so much information from this community, bonded together by nothing more than a common lack of follicles . I want to very briefly share some pictures of my first ever procedure, performed by the famous Dr. Damkerng Pathomvanich, of DHT Clinic, Thailand. I'll keep this brief, and you can look at my pictures instead. I told Dr. Path that I was aiming for a high number of grafts (close to 4,000 would have been nice), but before the procedure he couldn't be certain that it could be achieved. After I woke, he told me that he could harvest ~2,600 for this procedure, and he didn't want to proceed with more, because he wanted to "keep some in the piggy bank" as I'm fairly young, 33 years old, and the follicles could come in handy in the future. Truth be told, I was initially disappointed that we couldn't get more grafts, but I'll let my initial pictures speak for themselves. Pre-op picture of the drawn-up hairline: Night of the op (don't be concerned by that red scar, I used to have a patch of seemingly dead skin there. Dr. Path told me it was an area damaged by the sun, so he cauterized it and didn't transplant any hair on that area): Shock loss at the donor site (you can see obvious bald patches) was fairly serious, 21 days post-op: End of the honeymoon period where most of the grafts are still in place, 23 days post-op: Look at how well done the recipient site is! I kept marveling at the sight of a full head of hair in the mirror. Sadly, right on cue, the grafts have started to drop and I've since lost >30% of the grafts, 28 days post-op. Its a long waiting game now. I also apologize for keeping this so brief. There's a huge amount of information on this site already so I don't have interesting new tidbits to add. However, if you have any questions, just post on here and I'll try to answer if I can.

  18. Hello all, I just had a 3600+ graft FUT procedure done by Dr. Damkerng Pathomvanich in Thailand. I'm very pleased with the results and currently in the healing stage. The procedure was done 15 days ago, and I don't seem to be shedding the transplanted hairs. They seem to be growing. Is this normal? Should I expect all of them to fall out soon? The expectation set was that I would shed the transplanted hair, so the fact that they appear to be growing is surprising, but I suspect it may be an illusion and due to the fact that swelling has gone down. Replies appreciated in advance.
  19. Jls008, I appreciate you posting your opinion. I can understand why you and others focus primarily on surgeons who've been more present on our discussion forum over the years. However, there are some excellent doctors that have not yet been discovered because they haven't been overly involved or present in discussion forums. One thing I forgot to mention (which I've gone back and added) which is crucial is that Patrick Hennessey, founder and publisher of this community visited and evaluated Dr. Kongkiat Laorwong in live surgery about a year ago (2016) and was very impressed. Typically, Pat's reviews and highlights from his visits are added to the "Visits to Leading Hair Transplant Clinics" discussion forum category however, the photos and files from his laptop were damaged and he was not able to present them. I did however, consult with him just two days ago and he reiterated that he was impressed though he wishes he still had the documentation and files that he could share. Furthermore, Dr. Laorwong was trained and did his fellowship with former Coalition member Dr. Damkerng Pathomvanich. I understand that blurry photos can be a bit of a deterent in evaluating a surgeon. But it's important that we evaluate a surgeon based on his surgical ability and results rather than his photo taking skills. Also, take a look on this topic, one of our members said "Fantastic work, Glad to see you offer the no shave technique and have so good examples of this posted." While we haven't had much public feedback on this particular topic, I've received some private feedback from physicians with accolades of his involvement in the community and respect amongst his physician peers. I've also seen no real reasons suggesting why he shouldn't be recommended, especially given that Pat visited and was impressed with him, his procedure and results just last year. Best wishes, Bill
  20. Currently, the only hair transplant surgeon we recommend in SE Asia is Coalition member Dr. Damkerng Pathomvanich. "Dr. Path" as he is known is a top choice! You can use our interactive map to locate all of the physicians we recommend.
  21. hello fellow unfortunate souls... i have received a quote from local hasson&wong for a suggested FUE procedure for 2000 grafts, however, this is extremely expensive for me (at their rates) so i would like to consider going abroad. i was honestly quite surprised i needed that much tbh ive picked out from the list of surgeons through this site and have narrowed it down to the best possible, cheapest one: Dr. Damkerng Pathomvanich. i will update this thread with his quote but surely i'll get more simply from the currency rates of CAD > thai baht?? now my question is: how should i plan a safe trip? how long do people usually stick around for? how to get around without knowing any of the dialect? should i just stay cooped up in the hotel? (probably advised to avoid UV rays) how much to actually bring along and should you exchange before or after arrival? i probably got more questions but cant think of any at the moment...
  22. I'm also looking for information on Dr. Damkerng Pathomvanich and it's damn near impossible on this web site. Why can't I put Dr. Damkerng Pathomvanich's name in the search bar and get results? It shouldn't take 2 hours of my time and fail. In the last couple of months I have traded emails w/ the doctor and I like his approach as far as guidance and planning. I have an appointment w/ him in a couple of months for initial assessment and blood test then it will be decision time. I also have a date for the surgery if I go for it. I'll keep an eye on your thread. Thanks for posting.
  23. Hi, I am 26 years old, went through a hair straightening procedure 6-7 years ago, have been losing hair at moderate pace since then. Baldness runs in my family as well. At norwood 2 stage with less density in frontal area, i went through a 1000 graft hair transplant at Bangalore, India by Dr. Venkat charmalaya. It was a futile effort, i ended up with lesser hair on front, maybe due to shock loss and no additional regrowth, have also been on finasteride by dr. reddy;s for 6 months, no visible improvement. I seek help in choosing a doctor in India/Thailand.(Preferably India), A doctor who could assure results this time, as another futile transplant would deplete my donor supply and time. I would be grateful for your inputs, as this forum is my only ray of hope now. Personally visited Dr. Tejinder Bhatti in Chandigarh and Dr. Kapil Dua in Ludhiana, while Dr.Kapil Dua gave me a lot of comfort and confidence, Dr. Bhatti's reviews seem better, also he has many visible success cases on this forum, i also liked his clinic's exclusivity to hair restoration. Have also went through posts of HT failures by both doctors on this forum, specially the one where Dr.bhatti did not do most of the surgery by himself, and the forum's have a lot of failed cases against doctor dua, While both of them are only "recommended" surgeon's here, Dr. Damkerng Pathomvanich in Thailand is "coalition surgeon", would going to him create a huge difference, or either of these two mentioned doctors equally good ? I am aware that while harvesting and design is done by the surgeon himself, while planting is done by the helpers, is this true always ? Also, i need guidance in how to go about the surgery with high success chances this time, without feeling cheated like in the first case, please help me choose a surgeon. Regards, Hairhoho
