Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. Dr. Feriduni, Dr. Devroye, and Dr. Farjo are all outstanding. I would choose the one that is the least expensive and closest. I'm not so sure about Dr. Bisanga. Much of his work looks impressive, but a patient of his posted a result on this site a month or so ago that was very troubling. Dr. Bisanga left a noticeable gap between the transplanted and native hairs. It wasn't that the patient lost native hair and a gap was created, Dr. Bisanga left the gap. Whether it was conscious desire, or mere inadvertence, the fact remains that the surgery was unsuccessful. I know nothing about Dr. Mwamba. As for Prohair, they make some very bold statements on their website that are unsupportable. One example is "No risks, no complications, no visible scarring." There are risks with FUE, there can be complications, and there is visible scarring. Any clinic that makes false statements like those is immediately scratched off of my list.
  2. Look into Bisanga, too, for FUE. Unfortunately, he has a very low (if not non-existent) presence on this forum; but I would sincerely recommend looking into him. I think TC gave you a very good list of people to consider and consult with. You are essentially a "strip candidate", yet you aren't because you simply won't go a route other than FUE. Thus, a very large FUE session is what you want; the problem here, of course, is that getting a lot of grafts in a single FUE session isn't the simplest thing, and there is a ton of hype in this realm. So, where am I going with this.....I would give particular investigation into both who is *willing* to do a larger FUE session for you, and who has the *actual* capabilities (re: yield). My impression is that: DeVroye does FUE sessions upwards of ~2500 (this is from something I remember him saying); Dr. Feller ~1800-2000 (this is from what I've actually seen); and SMG on a slightly smaller scale, ~1000-1500 (this is just from what I've anecdotally observed). But ya, the only docs who I've seen megaession-FUE from that rivals strip pound4pound is from Bisanga and also Dr. Mikelas from HDC Cyprus. I personally wouldn't go to them tomorrow, so I wouldn't recommend you do either; but, in your circumstance, I would absolutely investigate in that direction.
  3. You're talking about doing strip + FUE in the same "session", right? Dr. Mikelas (spelled wrong) of HDC Cyprus has done a good deal of combo work. I think Bisanga has, too, but not sure on him. I can't think of any other clinic that springs to mind, but I have a vague recollection that SMG has considered this, as well.
  4. DeVroye, Shapiros, Feriduni, Bisanga, Konior, Gabel, and maybe Dr. Umar and Dr. Wolf.
  5. $6 per graft for FUE is very reasonable. I know there was some controversy regarding Dr. Umar on this site a while back, but I like the work that I have seen of his. It seems that $6 is about the average now for FUE. The Shapiros, Wolf, Feriduni, Bisanga, and DeVroye are all around that number, or even slightly lower. With newer tools and more top notch doctors offering less expensive FUE, I expect the procedure to continue to drop in price and be more accessible to a larger number of people.
  6. The 3-4% is what I personally feel the average loss should be during the extraction process, some patients will have less, some may have more...either way for those not wanting a strip scar, it is an acceptable trade off. Another point is that not all transected grafts are lost, some regrow in the donor and if you transect a 3 hair graft, but still get a 1 hair out of it, it still counts as a transection, even though you have a 1 hair graft left. TC I guess the question of donor extraction is left to each clinic. Most clinics feel the 20-25% mark is about the maximum you want to take from the donor for most patients. Some patients will be less, others who are blessed with thicker donor could possibly be more. It is about being responsible and doing a session, assessing the impact on the donor and then planning out future sessions. Quite frankly you nor your doctor know how a large FUE session will leave your donor looking, which is why using smaller tools, not overharvesting from any particular spot on the donor is paramount to achieve the full efficacy of FUE--- At some point, even if the scarring is non-existent, gaps in the donor will serve to give the donor a moth-eaten look, which essentially will serve to look like scars, imo. To answer your question, there is nothing wrong with harvesting more than 20-25%---but harvesting 30-35-40% at one time might create the scenario I detailed above. We are keeping sessions to around 2000--maybe the right patient 2500 max, over 3 days just to make sure we properly space out the extractions, handle the grafts carefully, etc... once the patients grow, in we can reassess the impact and go forward. I do not profess to speak for all FUE clinics, but if you look at the work of Dr. Feller, Dr. Harris, and Dr. Bisanga (to name a few) they generally do 1000-2500 grafts max in one session--and they all have great results. You never hear of them over-harvesting a patient either. They do a great job, then go back, assess the impact on the donor, then plan accordingly. There seems to be a balance or tipping point when doing FUE---it has to be true---you can take 5 patients with the same level of loss and come up with 5 different results on the donor--some you can continue to take and take from, whereas others one session of 2000-2500 grafts might be it. It is the same with strip--one guy has 10K of strip grafts, one guy has 4000, and the other 3 have 6-8K. My last point to you TC is that even if you go to a NW 6, even if you take all your available grafts, it may not mean you will have a dense head of hair---many of us have to choose higher frontal density and trade a bald crown or light coverage in the crown---it may be that taking 3-4K of grafts, giving you a great hairline, coverage over the frontal 100-120cm and still leaving you the ability to buzz down to a #2 on the sides with a military cut or shorter haircut on top looks great or will give you the same satisfaction that doing 8500 grafts will give you via strip. Sorry for the long post, Jason
  7. (I was not able to upload the pics in earlier post so posting it again). Finally I have had my HT last month with Dr Bisanga. Initially I was interested in FUE but later on doctor's advise I agreed on FUT/Strip. I am really thankful to this site which helped me to choose a good doctor. I shortlisted couple of doctors initially and later decided to go ahead with Dr. Bisanga (BHR clinic). I am 26 year old. The total transplanted follicular unit count was 3387 (1 hair: 580, 2 hair: 1458, 3 hair: 770, 4 hair: 579). My experience with BHR was quite ok , even I would say it was good. The staff was no doubt very friendly. On the day, the procedure started early in the morning and I was given local anaesthesia, which was little bit painful. Later, the doctor took out the strip and made the punches. After lunch, technician started placing the grafts and the procedure completed in late night. During the procedure I felt absence of the doctor but might be I was under anaesthesia and not able to know that even though he was not continuously present there but was monitoring. The procedure was little bit tiring and at the end I was getting out of patience. The procedure was little bit painful (but that was expected), but the doctor ensured that the pain is avoidable as much a possible. I can still feel numbness in my donor area. I think my donor area will take some more time to heal completely. Donor area need more care in strip procedure compared to FUE. I had faced problem while sleeping because I had to sleep on my sutures (no other option) . But, I feel tough time is gone and its time to wait and watch. I am not sure about the shock loss but since my HT I can see lot of hair fall even in donor area but hopefully it is for short duration. I have started rogain and fanst few days back. Many Many thanks to you all especially Bill,Pat, thanatopsis_awry, Arrie, etc. I am uploading my pics and will appreciate your reviews and comments.
  8. Luca, I've seen you lately posting your experience and photos all over every Dr. Bisanga related post, including threads over a year old. Please start your own thread and keep your experience and photos confined to your topic. If Dr. Bisanga or his clinic choose to reply, they can do so on your topic rather than attempt to follow you around sharing your experience on every thread. Understand that we try to be fair and safe for patients (allowing them to share their genuine experiences, opinions, concerns, and photos) and fair to doctors (giving them the right to reply readily when appropriate). Thus, I've removed some of your posts on older topics you revived. Posting your genuine experience and photos on one topic is much more effective and fair to everyone. I expect your next post about your experience will be in a new topic rather than older revived ones. Since this is not your thread, any additional discussion about your experience on this thread will be removed. Thanks in advance for your anticipated cooperation. Bill

  11. Ok Bill, I will post a photo album soon and I will be really happy to let Dr Bisanga giving his feedback and explanations cause so far his answers have been so poor. Just to clarify, I never asked for free grafts. His assistant in the pre op instruction wrote me that the doctor, during the surgery can ask permission to the patient to put some extra grafts and, eventually, he will put them for free to obtain a good result. but this was not my case! With 2600 grafts I only chose a more conservative hair line design in order to save hairs in my donor area for further surgery. I hope he did not left that bald area on purpose hoping that one day I will come back to him for a further surgery... Ps: can fine attached the consultation sheet where you can read the number of grafts required according to Dr. Bisanga cheers L
  12. I want to clarify a few of the things I said above. No doctor is under any obligation to give free grafts or work with a patient on pricing. It would be nice if they were willing to do so, but they don't have to. What I wanted to convey was my belief that if Dr. Bisanga knew that your end result was going to have a large gap because you were unable to pay for more grafts and he was unwilling to work with you on that aspect, then he should have strategically placed the grafts in a manner so that no gap would be visible. After looking over literally thousands of patient photos, I KNOW that doing so would have been feasible. If on the other hand you were told ahead of time that a gap would be present and you still decided to undergo the surgery, then you have no one to blame but yourself. I still find it so strange that a well respected physician would purposely leave such a noticeable gap on a patient. Oh well, que sera sera.
  13. That doesn't make any sense for a number of reasons. 1. Why would you proceed with a surgery KNOWING that you were going to have a gap like that? I wouldn't build a house if the contractor told me ahead of time that I would be left with only three walls. 2. Why would any respectable surgeon proceed with the transplant KNOWING the end result would be a very visible and unnatural gap? I would like to think that most respectable surgeons would work with you on pricing, give you some free grafts, turn you away, or place the 2600 grafts in a way that doesn't REQUIRE you to return for a second surgery. - the doctor's on this site always say that a hair transplant should be a standalone procedure, and that you should never have to come back for additional surgeries. that gap has necessitated that you hop back in the chair. I wish that Dr. Bisanga was recommended on this site so that he could answer some of these questions. It's not fair for me to sit here and pass judgment on a situation that I am not a party to, especially when only one side has been presented, but that immediate post op pic is very troubling to me.
  14. Luca, I think you should start your own thread instead of posting your photos on the one that exchange started. That being said, I can see why you would be dissatisfied. At first glance I thought maybe you had just lost the hair behind your hairline, but the immediate post op pics clearly show that you were thin back there prior to surgery. Was any reason given for why Dr. Bisanga chose not to go back far enough to cover that area?
  15. Sorry GQ--I did not see this thread. At SMG FUE is 6.00 per graft with a 500.00 travel discount. (If the session does go 3 days, we do knock off an additional 200.00 to cover the additional stay) The idea behind this is we have many, many patients who need hairlines of 2000 grafts or less---at 6.00 per graft patients who are candidates for or simply want FUE for hairlines/frontal density---we want patients to be able to choose based on what THEY feel is best--without finances being the biggest determining factor. A 1800 graft hairline via strip would cost 9000.00- 900.00 travel discount = 8200.00 1800 FUE hairline = 10,800.00-500.00 = 10,300.00 So about a 2000.00 dollar difference, which we feel is about the right difference in price given the difference in extraction and the 2-3 days it takes for the procedure. The maximum amount of FUE grafts we extract is 1000---regardless if a patient is the easiest patient of all time and we could get 2000 in 4-5hours. Dr. Shapiro is interested in perfection only and in his opinion, taking 2-3 days to design a hairline using all FUE extracted grafts is good thing, not a negative. Additionally, we only do 1 FUE patient per week at this time. I would say we are about 3 months away from being able to present any hairline patients---I have gotten several emails asking for pics---I would be happy to provide them, but I simply do not have them. When we 1st started to do FUE our 1st patients were repair patients who inquired as to our procedures and we repaired them at a reduced rate---however, while their growth is fine, they have declined the share their results with the public. We just finished a young man from New Zealand who ended up getting about 1800 grafts who we are excited about as he has said he will share his pics, send us updates, etc... Again, people are choosing SMG based on trust, Dr. Shapiro's commitment to excellence and perfection. We have a smaller patient base. We are not making outrageous claims of expanded donor or any claims that fly in face of reason. We are doing FUE in what we feel is a laid back, non-rushed, highly detailed manner that will provide our patients with the same excellent results they demand. Dr. Shapiro would never offer a procedure that did not maintain the same level of excellence he has displayed over 15+ years. For those that want results now and an additional measure of comfort, I cannot help other than to tell you Dr. Feller, Dr. Bisanga, Dr. Harris, and Dr. Wolf all offer FUE and have shown excellent results and possess impeccable reputations. I welcome dialogue, questions, etc... or inquiries-- We work with those interested in coming to SMG--please feel free to contact me (as many of you already have ) or simply ask a question as GQ has. Take Care, Jason
  16. TC17, I've been speaking with Phil, the patient coordinator for Dr. Bisanga who has expressed interest in potential recommendation in the past. However, even though he's been invited, to date, he has not taken advantage of presenting examples of Dr. Bisanga's work on our forum for review. Thanks for checking, Bill
  17. Bill, Any update on Dr. Bisanga and presenting photos for review?
  18. From what I read Dr. Bisanga is very good. I have no personal experience with him and have not seen much of his work but other poster's here seem to be pleased with his work.
  19. JamesH , Thanks for the links. One or two of the results looked unatural to me.The others looked like poor growth which I've accepted as a risk when having a HT. Im not a Bisanga patient - just looking into the different options in Europe. Could you tell that any work had been done with the Dr.Mwamba patients you met ? B Spot , have you seen Mwambas and Bisangas work in person. Are they on the same level as Dr.Shapiros'results ?
  20. Hi Paddy, Dr. Bisanga does excellent work, as does Dr. Mwamba. Dr. Devroye is also rapidly becoming more noticed as well. His approach seems to be very similar to Dr. Shapiro's. I know James has done his best to put you off Dr. Bisanga--and that is fine as one patient to another---it is always a good thing when another person looks to pass information to avert a possible problem. However, what you should do is simply ask the clinic to provide you with some patients who live near you or arrange to have them have 2-3 patients meet you in person in Belgium--take a look at the work that way. Then make a decision. Either of these 3 clinics do nice work--I think Dr B and Dr. M are a bit more aggressive than Dr. D (from what I have seen) but there is nothing wrong with the quality of either of them. Hope this helps, Jason

  24. Anyone happen to know what Dr. Bisanga charges per FUE graft? I have the exact hair loss pattern as the guy in M&M's pics.
  25. John_Locke, I'd also recommend looking into Dr. Bisanga. Petesman, Why are you keep going back to these guys? I wouldn't have returned the first time, fair enough fight for your money back but come on man, they messed your first surgery up enough that they offered you a "free" surgery, now they have messed something up with the "free" repair, they want you in yet again for your next "free" offer - you must be mad if you are considering going back to them. Also, what's went wrong this time? I mean for them to know after a week, its not right. I keep stating "free" as you mentioned it a few times in your post, I'm sure thats how DHI is putting it across but it's far from free mate. Do your self a favour don't go back and stop taking in their crap!! If you don't, I'm willing to bet that we'll see you on here again - maybe year down the road needing major repair work done or at best not enough donor left for any future surgeries.
