Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. Dr. Farjo is considered quite behind the times when it comes to FUE and is substantially more expensive than the not so far away Belgian and Turk FUE masters. +1 wouldn't reccomend the non shaved FUE, it's slower, more expensive, usually the yield is lower and it makes it harder to place the incisions effectively. The best hairline doctor in my opinion is without a doubt Dr. Keser in Istanbul, but he only does 500-700 grafts a day which might be a problem. Erdogan in Istanbul is getting equivalent if not better results than the Belgians for a much cheaper price, but Lupanzula and Bisanga are also great doctors.

  3. Overview: 2509 graft FUE done by Dr. Hasson Hey all, I wanted to create a thread regarding my experiences/updates with respect to the FUE procedure I had with Dr. Hasson in Vancouver. I am a 26 year old white male, and live in Washington, DC. Background: I started to notice the hairs on my temples becoming weaker during my senior year of high school. I didn’t think much of it at the time as I kept my hair longer in the front and it wasn’t too noticeable. Once I went to university and decided to buzz it down, I realized that my hairline was disappearing. Four years later I realized that miniaturization was continuing with hairs further back, so I consulted a dermatologist, who recommended Finasteride (1 mg) to me. I’ve been taking it for 2.5 years now, and I have seen no further loss. Luckily I didn’t experience too many of the Fin side effects, so I’ll continue to use it until a better solution comes out. For the past 18 months, I’ve lurked around the various hair loss forums. I knew in the beginning that I wanted to go with FUE so as to avoid the linear scar (but to be clear, many doctors on this site are so skilled that these scars are almost non-existent). The idea of travelling for my operation wasn’t a deterrent, so Rahal, Feriduni, Bisanga, and Keser were in mind. But once I found out that H&W was offering FUE, I went for a consultation. Consultation with HW: Luckily H&W was offering consultations in my city, so in mid-March I met with Mike. Unlike a consultation I had before, we mainly talked about sports, travel, and women (we’re simple men). I explained how I wanted to recreate my hairline, but also wanted to do so in a manner that would look appropriate over time. Mike examined my donor and recipient areas, and said I’d need around 2000 grafts to get the job done. When I was told the number of grafts I’d need, I had a sigh of relief as my prior consultation concluded I’d need 3000 grafts. After a few days of back and forth with Mike, I decided to schedule my surgery. On June 5, I travelled to Vancouver for my operation the following morning. Day of Surgery: Sleeping the night before was difficult, but fortunately I had travelled a long way and was worn out. The following morning I arrived bright and early, completed all the paperwork, and met with Elena (who has to be the best HT tech ever!). A few minutes later, Dr. Hasson walked into the room and we began to discuss my proposed hairline. As he looked further into my recipient area, he said that it would require 2500 grafts to really make the transplanted area match the non-miniaturized area. Having travelled over 3000 miles, I wanted to have it done correctly. So Elena and Dr. Hasson took pre-op pictures, and I took to the chair. I have to mention that Dr. Hasson has the best staff! Given the large number of grafts, they stayed until 1am to get the job done. And still, when I went in the following day they were as bright and friendly as the day before. Pain/immediate Post Op: I was given pain meds and sleeping meds, but I decided only to take the Tylenol. Day 1 Post Op: Went in at 12pm for my first wash. Elena examined my donor area and noted that the donor graft holes had already gotten much smaller. Later that night, the itching began. Day 2 Post Op: Went in at 12pm for my second wash. While waiting for the tech, Dr. Hasson walked by and examined me. He said that the recipient grafts looked very strong, and that my donor area was healing nicely. 2 Weeks Post Op: By this point, I've shed 25% of the graphs. I think that’s enough for now, but here are a few pictures. Pictures: Pre Op 1-2, Immediate Post Op 3, 2 Day Post Op 4-9, 1 Week Post Op 10-11, 2 Weeks Post Op 12-14
  4. Run,run,run.... Search Dr.Robert Jones and you will find quite a few horror stories. He was one of the first doctors I researched being in Canada and has a fair amount of marketing behind him and the clinic. IF you're in Ontario... I would highly suggest looking at Dr.Rahal and some advice that has been said a million times don't limit yourself to geography. It also depends on what surgery your looking at. I imagine it is FUE and the consensus would be Europe - Belgium(Bisanga, and Ferdiuni), Dr.Erdogan(Turkey) and Lorenzo Spain. North America is more of a gamble but I liked what I have seen from certain doctors.

  6. thank you for reply, I had a consult with Dr.Hakan Doganay, Koray Erdogan, Rahal, Yaman, Karadeniz, Keser, Feriduni and pending Bisanga. I was more concerned about vertex and crown area, not sure how it will look like if I get 50% on top and back, 50% for front and hairline. And I'm deciding between Dr.Rahal and Dr.Yaman
  7. My hair caliber is thick. I don't know the number but it's noticily thick as individual strands - on the back at least! Right now I'm trying to decide between dr konior and Dr lupanzula. Both are coming in at a similar price, but I may have to wait 8 months longer for dr konior. I've not gotten info from Dr. bisanga yet.... given this is my intended last touch on my hairline and frontal region, is it better to hold oit for dr konior?
  8. Hello Boys I have researched for quite a while now to find the right surgeon for me. I have had a lot of online consultations and also some personal consultations and met the Dr's and as it is now I have narrowed it down to 3 surgeons, Dr. Bisanga (Belgium) Dr. Keser (Turkey) Dr. Maras (Cyprus) I am NW 2.5-3 and the work should focus on temples and restoration of front hairline. The mentioned Dr's all three pretty much came up with the same plan and estimated same amount of grafts which is soothing to me But I am having a hard time to make the final decision of who to go with. As far as I have researched (thousand of hours ) I have only seen very impressive results from the mentioned 3 Dr's. I know it is a very individual preference but do you have any input to decide the correct surgeon between those three Doctors? Thanks
  9. Update from Day 7! So; first of all, it's been really odd; I've had basically no swelling at all since the procedure! I'll count that as a good thing! I have been wearing my bandana when I've gone out although this does leave my donor area exposed to the sun (and it's particularly sunny around England right now); so I've been a bit worried. From tomorrow (day 8); I've decided I'll wear a beanie (I didn't want to wear one before as I was worried it would tug on the hair due to the material). Also; I'll finally be able to touch the recipient zone tomorrow (lightly). It will be nice to start removing some of the scabs forming (see the photos and look at those lovely yellow crusts). Looking all OK at the mo; I'm trying to decide when and how to use finasteride; been contemplating 1mg EOD (M,W,F) or 0.5mg EOD. Thanks David. A small favour, do you think you would be able to (if possible) change the name of the thread to: FUE 3380 grafts with Dr. Bisanga rather than 3000-3500 (which it is currently seen as still?). Many thanks
  10. This is a tricky question because everyone's goals, budget and preferences are different including whether they want an aggressive or conservative approach, location and logistic factors, pricing, tech-centric or doctor-centric clinics etc. If we're talking worldwide, Dr. Couto, Lorenzo, Bisanga and Erdogan (add Feriduni in there too) are among the best in Europe. Dr. Konior, Diep and Vories are the top ones in N. America. That at least should be a starting point to begin your research. You can narrow it down from there.
  11. Why not consider Dr. Bisanga? But out of the 2 you have mentioned; Dr. Lupanzula
  12. Bisanga likes to shave the immediate recipient area but does agree to partial shaving. Dr. Maras in Cyprus does partial shaving as well. You already mentioned Dr. Konior who is my favorite doc for transplanting into existing hair (stick and place technique). I also agree with home1212, shaving is best for achieving optimal results especially in cases where techs will be involved.
  13. Sean and Slush bring up some good points as well. I know Dr. Keser in Turkey and one doc in CA (Baubac) achieve 65 grafts/cm2 or slightly higher, but the key factor is what is Nafta's hair caliber - or what is the person's own hair caliber who will undergo the procedure Really cannot talk about recommended density numbers without mentioning (1) native hair caliber and (2) taking into consideration donor supply. For dense results on a bald or very thin scalp where dense packing is warranted I like Dr. Erdogan and Dr. Keser as the FUE density kings and Dr. Hasson and Dr. Rahal for the FUT counterparts. If going into existing native hair in follow-up procedures to tweak density, Dr. Konior's (and I believe Dr. Gabel's too) "stick and place" technique cannot be beat. I've had multiple progressively smaller touchups with Dr. Konior and I never experienced any shockloss or transection whatsoever (2 FUT and 1 smaller FUE most recently). Dr. Lorenzo, Dr. Bisanga, Dr Cooley, Dr Shapiro are also others that do excellent touchup procedures as well for density boosts.
  14. All done now! 3380 grafts in total; which I think is pretty good; breakdown of the grafts was (confirmed): - single: 881 - double: 1528 - triple: 890 - quadruple: 81 roughly 2.05 hairs per graft. 2nd day was definitely harder; I think the pain was just a bit more and that was the issue; as it was already sore from the previous day and to have further insult wasn't great. But the day went smoothly; from 9.30am - 6pm more or less and now I'm done! I've been given all the instructions and will visit tomorrow morning for a wash before heading to the train station. I've got to say; Dr. Bisanga and all the staff were really lovely! I had an especially interesting experience as I speak french (limited) and spanish; so managed to speak in 3 different languages today! Wish me luck on my progress!
  15. Hey Guys; so I'm back from my first day (7am-4pm). Have done about half of it; supposedly around 1,700 grafts so far! Just to give you some more info; Woke up at 5am; I've picked an unfortunately loud airbnb close to the clinic (about a 15min walk), so didn't get the sleep I would have wanted, but I was surprisingly fresh and rearing to go; probably the adrenaline getting me through!. Had a shower, made breakfast then put my shirt on and headed out. Arrived just before 7am, and the gates of the BHR clinic opened. Filled in all the necessary paperwork and then spoke with Dr. Bisanga again about what I wanted. I was slightly hesistant as I did want a lower hairline than he thought i should get, but in the end I trusted him with the decision (I can always get it done lower in future procedures). He was worried because he said he could see some retrograde alopecia (I do have a baldspot, but it doesn't currently move back from there) but the hair is a little thin. He told me once more that I should probably consider finasteride; which is something I am STILL considering; although if I did then maybe 2 or 3 propecia tabs a week at max; I like my hormones as they are (except for the destroying my hair part). Anyways, that is something to think about at a later point. After changing into the gown, and the shoes for the shoes, I made my way upstairs and they started shaving my head. We had forgotten to take the pictures so it was stopped halfway through and some pictures were taken before the rest of the back of my head was shaved. Then came the drugs; 1g of Amoxi some diazepam; I've never had either drugs before - the diazepam really did knock me out, and made the whole experience much better as the anaesthetic injections into the back of the scalp....OWWWWWW.. Really painful, and I've had tattoos! although I soon got used to it. I kept drifting in and out as Dr. Bisanga punched away. It really is an awkward position when you are lying there, it's certainly not comfortable, but the drugged up version of me didn't care all that much. After the grafts were all punched out, it was time to make slits at the front. THIS IS WHERE THE INJECTIONS WERE HORRIBLE! Really really painful, but got through it again. By lunch time I had one of the technicians already starting implanting the grafts in (as 2 others sorted them into 1, 2s & 3s). The technician who did mine was lovely (I can't remember her name) but she mentioned she had been there 10 years or so which was reassuring, I didn't want any newbie doing this of course. Once again, I drifted in and out as some pop music played on the TV above, and finally at around 4pm, we stopped - supposedly around 1,700 were done that day; I would get the full count the next day though. And below are the results so far (looks like I bled a lot!; as you can see only one side has been punched so far; the other side is for tomorrow)
  16. Congratulations on your choice! Dr. Bisanga, as you know, has a stellar reputation. Sounds like a solid plan. I'm looking forward to following your journey. Best of luck!
  17. Patient in his late 40s wanted to have a conservative approach to his hair line design and then blend back into the frontal third as required. Updated as 6,7 and 10 Months and photos provided by the patient. Graft breakdown was as follows:- 1s 445 2s 1251 3s 1116 4s 400 Total FU:- 3212 Pre-op Placement 6 months 7 Months Hair line close up Strip at 7 Months Comparisons 10 Month update
  18. Thanks for your input I'm still doing a thorough research but my final list consist of Dr. Bisanga Dr. Feriduni Dr. Erdogan Dr. Keser Dr. De Rey Dr. Doganay Dr. Lorenzo Any comments to any of these guys?
  19. N. America: Dr Diep, Dr Konior, Dr Vories Belgium: Dr. Bisanga, Dr Lupanzula Turkey: Dr. Erdogan, Dr. Keser The docs above produce few if any poor results, and should be in your final list. Research it exhaustively and have online consultations until you find "the one". good luck
  20. I have not been able to take some more pictures outside due to the weather and it getting dark early but i have had to reduce fin to 0.3mg daily due to getting sides on 0.5mg. I continue with the supplements and min foam after this bottle i will try the liquid to see if it works better for me. I have developed a itch right in the crown area where the hair starts to bald it could be min. My hair is looking much better since been on meds no doubt. I will be booking a appointment with Dr. Bisanga soon to see if my donor hair situation has improved enough for me to have a ht.
  21. Both, Some people are just not suitable candidates for hair transplants even if the some doctors say they can have a ht. If they go ahead with ht good luck to them but it may all look good at the start but later on they will find out and could be in a worse situation then they started. This is why i have done alot of research before deciding if i could have a ht or not and why. Just to add when my donor area was checked by DR. Bisanga (BHR Clinic) there was a high amount of hair miniaturization so what if i had gone ahead with the other doctors it would have been very risky.
  22. I'm 37 and have been receding for around 5 years. I used regaine which seemed to slow down the process but got to a stage where I looked better if I just shaved it all off. I was willing to pay for transplants and started googling. Came across Mr Shahmalak and noticed he had done a few celebrities, had links to Harley street so thought I'd be in safe hands and booked a consultation. I found Mr. Shahmalak to be very down to earth and quiet friendly. After a little small talk he asked me what I'd like to achieve to which I replied a fuller head of hair using FUE. He stood behind me, stroked the top of my head and said he could give me what I wanted. We talked about propecia and I informed him I couldn't take due to other medication. He said I'd need 4400 grafts in 2 sessions. He usually charges 5 pounds per graft but from my info he could see I wasn't on a big income and said he'd be willing to do it at 4 pound per graft. The first session would be the front half, be 2700 grafts and cost 10,800 pound. He said I'd have to wait a year to see if the first session was successful and then come back for a further 1700 grafts at a cost of 6,800 pounds After my consultation I got back on google and found this site. After reading lots of reviews I then booked an appointment with Dr Bisanga, found a return same day flight for ?84 and set off to Belgium. Dr Bisanga and his staff were very friendly. He went into lots of details about hair and hair transplants explaining every part of the process and how things work. He put an instrument on my head which magnified my folicals on a screen in front of me and showed me I had very limited donor and retrograde alopecia. He took measurements from my donor area, did some calculations and told me I could only harvest 4000 grafts from my donor area and this was using a mixture of FUE and FUT technique. If I couldn't start using prepecia immediately then eventually I'd need 6000 grafts which wasn't possible so basically accept the fact that I'm going to be bald. I'm so glad I found this site and read all the good things about Dr. Bisanga. I can't imagine how I'd feel and looked if I'd gone ahead and spent 17,600 pounds with Asim Shahmalak.
  23. Hey all, Your input on a good lifetime plan for a hair transplant gameplan would be very much appreciated. I'm 33 with a Norwood 5A diffusing patten (pretty slowly). I use Nizoral shampoo every other day and minoxidil every night. I have decided not to use, and will not use, propecia/finasteride due to the side effects and general effect on the body. That is a personal decision and understand that the two things I use currently are not enough to prevent stopping hair loss long term. I have been researching all this for over a year and have visited a few HT doctors, with the most well known on here being Dr. Bisanga in Belgium for a full exam in person. Due to some family history and other things it looks like I'll be a NW6-7 eventually so I need to plan any HT procedures for that. Here are some of the stats from the exam with Dr. Bisanga: 78/cm2 average hair density (68/80/85 density in three measured areas) No/Insignificant miniaturisation in donor area FUE only: estimated 5,000 (conservative) to 6,000 (pushing it) grafts available (two procedures, no strip) FUE + FUT: 7,500 - 8,000 grafts available (three procedures 2 FUE 1 strip) He said I'm a good candidate and the transplant would be 40-45/cm2 towards the front with a bit thinner towards the back for coverage with an overall conservative/mature looking hairline approach. At least two, most likely three procedures over my lifetime will be needed. So the big question is: How would you go about this transplant knowing the above in this situation? By pure numbers it would seem to make sense to do a strip procedure at some point for a lot more grafts. But do you do this first? Or can you do FUE with leaving the "strip line area" alone for the future? What else am I missing or what other considerations are not on the radar here yet? Thanks very much!

  25. Hello dear community members! I have had a 2500 grafts FUE with Dr. Bisanga in 2015. While the frontal hairline looks really nice and natural, I am very unsatisfied with the right temporal point. There are two reasons for this: 1) The transplanted grafts are very strong. There are multiple 2 and 3 multi grafts, resulting in a unnatural look. 2) The hair direction is rather horizontal, very unlike the hair behind the transplanted area, which is more vertical. I would like to have this area restored, as I really dislike the unnatural look. Question is: What is the best way to restore the temporal point? Should the unnatural looking multi grafts be extracted or should additional grafts be transplanted into the surrounding area? Has anyone had an an experience like this and which restoration clinics can be recommended? I'm thankful for any advice! Best regards
