Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. Hello Interweb A little about me, I am 37 years old and started to notice hairloss at around 21. I worried a lot at the time and over the years, more than I needed to - I actually learned to hold it at bay getting very good haircuts, something which is highly underrated for early stage hairloss imo! I spent too much of my life worrying (so much so I was even looking at hairpieces when it ABSOLUTELY was not warranted, thankfully I didn’t go through with it) and wish someone had known to tell me at that time the loss I had was mostly in my head and wasn’t a big deal in the slightest. Then I did start to lose quite a lot of hair about 6 years ago, I was looking pretty bald when quite suddenly it reversed! It was a bit of a miracle with a lot of hair coming back, which I still don’t fully understand, however it then resumed around 2 years ago to the point where now, finally I felt like something needed to be done. Therefore I’ve been looking at getting a HT for over 10 years on and off. As an aside, I remember in 2008 that everyone was convinced “hair-cloning” was coming any day now.. so I was always thinking oh if I can hold out for that… you know how that worked out haha. So when I see that kind of article now I can’t help but be sceptical. Anyway, I’m glad I was able to wait in the end as I feel the technique, especially FUE, has been greatly honed in this time. I was always expecting to get FUT when reading years ago, but now the donor area management with FUE are ending up looking amazing and the skills to make sure the grafts take are equally impressive - among the best surgeons that is of course. In addition I was always expecting to fly to the USA or Canada as that’s where the best doctors were back in the day - so I was really pleased when researching this time around to find that there are now some excellent choices for us Europeans. Great for easy travel in Covid times, to be able to have good service in our continent and support EU business. I’m not going to talk much about the selection process, but I decided to go with Dr Bisanga. Him and his team were highly professional from first contact (special thanks to Ian!) and seem to have the process, communication, aftercare and most importantly results locked down. I have posted some pre-op photos, they aren’t really that good as they were not intended for this purpose. Something to note is that my hair is very “fluffy” - eg it doesn’t look so bad really even though there is actually very little of it there! The hair characteristics have been quite a blessing in hiding the loss over the years. The clinic took better pre-op photos which do show the extent of the loss, perhaps I will get them from them at some point and post them here. Drugs-wise I took Propecia for around 6 months 2 times in my life and got side effects so stopped. I recently started again as the crown for the first time was looking a little weak - but only take 3mg per week (every other day), just before I go to bed and this has been ok in the month since I started. Dr Bisanga highly recommends oral Minoxidil which I’m considering taking also. This forum has been such a great resource to me going back all those years when I would check in every now and then to see what was going on in HT world, and all the more so over the last few months when I’ve done intensive research to plan the HT that I just had done. I think it’s really great that people who have had the same life experience come together to advise and support each other. So although it’s not really my kind of thing, I just had to post a bit about my story and make a little diary here to give something back to the place that has helped me out so much - I hope that it’ll end up being a positive story..!
  2. Background: 28 years old with a NW2 type recession and very mild thinning in the crown. Family history: Mother’s side has great hair genetics (her father and brother had a full head of hair well into their late years), MPB present with my father and his late father, however, slow and gradual loss, my father is 65 and has more so thinned throughout the top rather than lost hair. I don’t have siblings, and my first cousin who I share my grandfather with from dad’s side, is 36 years old and shows no signs of thinning. * Important to note - I believe that looking at family history could be relevant to some extent, but should not be relied on. If you have experienced hair loss, 95% chance it is from MPB. It's due to genetic variations, your genetics are complex and unique, and MPB is progressive. It is wishful and naive thinking to believe you may “stabilize” one day or try to determine your final form so to say. Prevention: Propecia - Currently 1mg/ED (every day) - Started January 1, 2020 at low dosages, and worked up to 1mg a day. Experimented with 0.25mg EOD (every other day) and gradually increased the dose as I felt comfortable. - More time is necessary to judge entirely how efficacious finasteride has been for me, but I believe it is maintaining my hair. My hope and goal at the core is prevention, any added density or regrowth would be a blessing. Minoxidil - Rogaine 5% Foam 1x per night ED - Started about 1.5 years ago - Love/hate relationship, does occasionally irritate my scalp and other times its fine. The application itself is not a hassle as it takes a couple of minutes to apply, however, I'm not a fan of how it leaves my hair feeling clumped and greasy. - Hoping for the minoxidil sulfate test to come out asap to determine whether or not topical minoxidil is ultimately effective for me. (Might switch to oral) Microneedling - 1.5mm 1x a week, no topicals for 24 hours after session. - I use Dr. Pen microneedling device - Apply it all over my scalp other than my recipient area for the time being. - Takes me around 10 minutes, and I rather enjoy it oddly enough its therapeutic for me Shampoos - Nizarol 2% ketoconazole, Regenpure DR 1% Ketoconazole, Selsun Blue 2.5% (extra strength). - I alternate the use of these. I aim to use nizarol only once a week at most as it drys my scalp, Might use Regenpure once a week on a different day, and will only use Selsun Blue when my scalp feels irritated/itchy, I find this shampoo to be the best at clearing up dandruff and dermatitis. - Otherwise I use some mild organic shampoo without sulfates, that includes all the fancy ingredients like biotin, nettle, tea tree, etc etc & currently using Herbal Glo EOD. Hair Mask - - Occasionally I put on a hair mask, not for prevention towards MPB (will not do anything to address androgenetic activity), but to moisturize my dry scalp. - I use coconut oil, castor oil, pumpkin seed oil, peppermint oil, tea tree oil & I use 1 egg yolk that helps bind all the ingredients together so it's not dripping all over the place. Supplements - - Not super important in my opinion, as I have tested my blood levels for deficiencies for many years even before I realized I had hair loss. My Iron, B12, folate etc levels have always been intact. - Still I recommend anyone to test for any deficiencies as they could be hindering healthy hair growth. - I take Vitamin D, MSM, a collagen powder that contains biotin ED. - Cleaned up the diet and started exercising more consistently Considering: Oral Minoxidil - 1 - 2.5mg ED - Still searching for a doctor willing to prescribe it to me Dutasteride - Topical or Oral - 1x a week added to my finasteride regimine CB-03-01 - Topical Anti-Androgen to address remaining androgens in the scalp including testosterone & DHT Restoration - 2,401 FUE with Dr. Rahal on September 9, 2020 My search for a surgeon was narrowed down to Dr. Hasson, Dr. Bisanga & Dr. Rahal. I told myself I would be comfortable going to any of the three as each were very capable doctors for dense hairline work and had over 25+ years of specialization in the industry. Ultimately I made a decision to go with Dr. Rahal as the pandemic offered a unique opportunity for me in terms of timing to get my hair transplant. Being in lockdown meant that I would have the luxury to recover at home for at least the first 4 months, and likely further to 6 or 7 months as well. Dr. Rahal’s clinic offered a date in September that really worked for me, and being the first surgery after a long holiday period that meant 5 days of rest for him and his staff, while also being the only patient they operated on that day were big bonuses for me. Day of Procedure - The surgery went better than I could have hoped for, we started at 6:00 am and finished around 1pm, time seemed to fly by with some conversation with Dr. Rahal and his staff who were all friendly, and I felt little to no pain. Initially I was booked for 2,500 grafts, after drawing up a hairline and doing measurements, they determined they would aim closer to 2,200 grafts. They extracted 2,200 grafts and during the incision process, Dr. Rahal determined I would benefit with 200 more grafts added in for density, they flipped me over and extracted again; to total 2,401 grafts. I was returned the difference as I originally paid for 2,500. Dr. Rahal had two main techs who extracted and implanted the grafts, and I believe I counted 4 other female techs who were under microscopes sorting and analyzing the grafts. The team worked very efficiently and one of the women came over to tell me that “my grafts looked very good”, which was nice for me to hear at that moment and hopefully it wasn’t just something she was saying to make me happy. Dr. Rahal checked into the room once in between extraction and placement, and it seemed he had a lot of trust in his staff. Dr. Rahal’s demeanour is calm and soft spoken, and also gets straight to business. I spent the night at their guesthouse, and my family and I expected to find accommodation at a hotel in Ottawa the following day as I didn’t know what to expect in terms of recovery, however, to my surprise I felt nearly no pain and we left immediately after the post-op the following day (4.5 hour drive back to Toronto from Ottawa). Fun fact, their clinic in Toronto is a total 7 min drive from my home, but the date they had available in Ottawa that week worked much better so we made the trip instead, which we rather enjoyed anyway. Everything considered, I was very happy with my experience on the merits of the work and attention I felt I was getting, minimal pain & swelling, and overall the immediate recipient area looked clean and dense and the donor looked good and healed quickly. My recovery was standard, I took a high level of precaution for the first two weeks, followed their instructions to the T and the post-op rep was always available to answer my questions. Why I chose FUE - For a few reasons. Every doctor I consulted with, including Diep, Zarev, H&W (consultant), Pradeep Sethi, Bisanga and of course Rahal told me I was a great candidate for FUE. I was told my donor had a fairly high capacity that I could tap into in case there was some more recession even on medication. The extracting tech ended up telling me he suspected I could achieve approximately up to another 6k, so in total 8k grafts. The other reason is that ever since I started getting haircuts as a kid on my own, I always kept my sides very short, I’ve always faded my hair and there may not have been a time since I was like 13 that my sides were longer than a 3 or 4 guard. So it was important to me to have this option. Lastly, I felt that FUE may offer a greater exit strategy if down the road things didn’t go according to plan and the Norwood Reaper wins the battle. It might be easier to shave down having done an FUE vs FUT, however, I don’t believe it would be easy with either. Surgery Details: Total grafts: 2,401 Total hairs: 5,458 Average hair per graft: 2.27 Graft break down: Singles - 407 Twos - 1,034 Threes - 857 Fours - 103 Recipient area size: 43cm^2 Recipient graft density: 55.8cm^2 Photo Dump: Clinic Photos: Day 3: Day 10 Day 14 1 Month 2 Months Month 3 This forum helped me get through this process and I'm grateful for it & I wanted to play it forward. I'll try to update month to month, any feedback is appreciated and welcomed. Special thank you to @Melvin-Moderator & @Raphael84 who were very helpful answering the many questions I had.
  3. Hello guys, As I am writing this I just came back from the BHR clinic for my post-operation consultation with Hilde, who is my patient advisor. Before we start I must say that the overall experience with BHR from the point where we first came into contact, has really been 10/10. They are very professional and really care about their patients a lot. Of course they might be more expensive than a clinic in Turkey, but therefore you have the feeling that they take care of everything and you see with their results everywhere online that by picking them you minimize your risk of a outcome which will not satisfy you. This peace of mind justified the costs for me. The head is throbbing a little bit and I only had 3 hours of sleep last night (however I was able to lay relaxed without any issue for about 8 hours total), but I am absolutely thrilled that I took the step and that everything went without complications so far. Now I am moving into the most important process which is the healing process, but before this will be shared in the coming months I would like to share some background. Today I am 28 and my balding has started around 18 years of age and I was using topical minoxidil shampoo the first time with 21 I would say. As this was very inconvenient I stopped doing so but ofcourse the balding process progressed. Then with 22 years I started taking finasteride, first 1,25mg a day and since the beginning of June this year I switched to capsules with 1mg a day. I am also using 5mg of oral minoxidil since 3 months (starting from 08 June 2021) to improve my donor area pre-operation. Apart from that I try to live healthy by eating whole foods, having a lot of regular exercise, being social and try to laugh as much as possible (reduces stress they say ) So upon first contacting the clinic I was looking like this (April 2020, only on my finasteride regime here): As can be seen pretty clearly the frontal area is thinning but my crown area has good cover, which I pretty much thank to the religious finasteride intake (of which I have 0 side effects by the way, also not what my reproduction is concerned). Now let us fast forward one year and a bit, to June 2021, as I was just about to start with the oral minoxidil. Now let us fast forward another 3 months to nearly the time where I had the operation and after I had my first three months with the 5mg oral minoxidil added to my regimine: What I have observed with the oral minoxidil: better hair thickness, increased body hair length (arms/legs) and more visible body hair in general. If we compare there two shots with the very first shot from April 2020, I feel that my overall hair quality and density has actually improved. So now let us move to some pre operation foto's of the hairline and after shaving: And then the day after the pre-op consultation I arrived at the clinic at 07:30 to be done at 17:30 that same day. They gave me some valium and overall I did not have any pains, it was a lot less bad then I have expected. Graft count: 2609 Graft breakdown: 1 Follicular Unit: 424 grafts 2 Follicular Unit: 1011 grafts 3 Follicular Unit: 1077 grafts 4 Follicular Unit: 97 grafts Donor density: 80/80 Now the immediately post-operation picture: Looking forward to share my healing process here with you guys and would like to thank everyone here sharing past experiences for us all to learn, benefit and make an educated decision from. Cheers
  4. Hello I’m 31 yo not taking and medication or doing treatment for hair loss. I’m Looking for a while to do my HT but I need help to make a decision I was consulted with Dr. Bruno Ferreira and Dr. Pekiner representatives both surgeons evaluate 3500 grafts . I have seeing few good reviews in this forum also about Dr. Bicer and I’m thinking to contact her clinic as well and open for any other surgeons suggestions for my case . I consulted with 2 other clinics Eugenix and Bisanga they evaluate 2500-3000 grafts would like to hear your opinion on the grafts number. Bisanga not an option out of my budget and Eugenix prefer not to travel to India for now so both not on my list anymore. I appreciate your help
  5. Firstly, welcome to the forum. I’m glad you found us. I would say you’re a Norwood 2/3. I don’t see a female pattern. It looks like typical male pattern in these photos. Now, I think you have to excellent choices. Dr. Feriduni is a Coalition surgeon, he’s viewed as an elite doctor. Dr. Bicer, is a fantastic, ethical doctor who’s an affordable option. I imagine you’re in Europe. I would also recommend Dr. Bisanga and Dr. De Freitas. Feel free to look at our full list of recommendations https://www.hairtransplantnetwork.com/Consult-a-Physician/hair-transplant-surgeons.asp?sr=HRN-MOB
  6. First of all, thanks for sharing your journey. I myself will undergo a FUE procedure with Dr. Bisanga in november and this gives me a great idea of how the first days/month will look like. You mentioned no pain during the procedure. Did the numbing injections hurt a lot, or was it manageable? Can't wait to see your next update, looking great so far.
  7. Quick back story, I’m 33 and have been losing hair for about 7-8 years. I’ve began to research hair transplants and landed on turkey. I reached out to Dr. Kesler and was turned away as “he only does small procedures.” I am in contact with Bicer but her coordinator has been taking her sweet ass time with responding. I’ve also reached out to Demirsoy and Bisanga in Brussels but have had no response as of yet. All initial contact has been within the last week btw. Anyways, my question for you guys is, does anyone know of a doctor that performs high quality work around a price point of what I can expect to spend on a quality HT in turkey that can get me coverage and density in a single treatment? I’m not even sure if coverage and density is even an option? Basically, I’m just hoping to get more insight, more direction, and a little bit of hope lol. I’ve seen pictures of men with hair loss that looks way more advanced than mine but for some reason I am getting denied or told 2 sessions and it’s not adding up for me. Please help. Pics are attached. Thanks!
  8. In this episode of "Bitesize with Bisanga", Dr. Bisanga discusses how and why a hair transplant surgery should never be rushed. That successful surgery is dependent on specific protocols that take the necessary time frame to be performed optimally and that surgery should be considered as a marathon, and never a race. He also shares the factors that impact the duration of a high-quality, professional hair transplantation procedures. Learn more how picking poor quality "hair clinics" can destroy your donor area and cost you more over the long run.
  9. After a long trip from Texas to Florida to Spain to Belgium, I arrived last night just in time to order a pizza and go to bed. Bright and early I made it to the clinic for my second hair transplant. Now I'm back from my procedure with Dr. Bisanga in Brussels. The objective was to cover the crown and touch up my temple points. Estimated 1,500 grafts, ended up with 1,528. Singles: 100 Doubles: 978 Triples: 450 The grafts were pulled from the back and my right side, not my left. Under magnification, my left side, above my ear, is weaker. Bisanga said there were mostly singles and doubles there, so leave them in place. His focus on donor management is impressive. I'll add more about the experience late. But for now, here are some pics. I'll leave my hair like this for a week, until I can shave it at home. Crown Before (month 8 after first transplant) Temples. Single hair grafts only. Something I didn't really notice before. I had some scar tissue in the back on my head. In the middle was a fat multi-graft. Dr. Bisanga punched it out with a 2mm punch. And then decided it would be best to cut out the scar and seal it with a single suture, which I'll have to have removed next week. I thought it was a very "pro" move. There was nothing wrong with it other than it looking a bit funny when shaved. I'm thrilled with this unexpected level of service. And funny... some clinics give headbands, some hats. Bisanga gives this crazy thing. Now I look like a grandma.
  10. Yes, I had some native hair there, but not much. They lowered my hairline about an inch or so. It was a lot, which is why the graft count was so high. It's not lined up perfectly, but you can see some of my native hair in the before pics. I did my temples when I got my crown worked on in Brussels with Dr. Bisanga. See link in my signature. Only 2 months so no results yet, but Bisanga is as gifted as they come so I have high confidence.
  11. You also want to first discuss the use of DUT with a doctor experienced in treating hair loss…you will need a script so discuss recommended use and amounts with Dr. Bisanga?
  12. Let's take a look at the positives here: - You have great amount of hair for someone who is 40 years old. I believe that it's getting hard to style and that weather conditions make it look awful sometimes but there's always a good old hair spray that can save the day. - Even though you haven't posted before it's clearly obvious that you have studied this field to some degree. You have chosen one of the best out there and you didn't rush into it before taking any kind of medications. That doesn't happen by chance. - If you still insist on hair transplant or if it becomes more viable option after consumption of oral minoxidil there are other doctors in the field who are specialized in harder cases, dr. Jose Lorenzo is definitely one of them. But, don't get me wrong, dr. Bisanga deserves all the credit that he receives, he's undoubtedly on the top of the food chain. - As Melvin mentioned there is always that possibility that some other therapy proves to be jackpot in terms of hair maintenance or regrowth (dutasteride can always be considered, if it affects your body to the point that it's messing up with your everyday life you can always decide to let it go). - If the hair loss bothers you so much that you are spending too much time in front of the mirror or you don't feel satisfaction for any other reason whatsoever you can try to shave it. Shaved head would certainly make you feel liberated, at least at the start. SMP can always add that extra touch to the look and make you feel more happy with yourself. I strongly advise anyone to stay positive and patient, no matter how hard their current situation is. Just imagine sometimes how much harder it is for some people in comparison to you. There are people without limbs, people suffering from all kinds of incurable diseases, they have it much worse but they still persevere.
  13. Of course, here is a picture of me holding my hair back, I do need like 2000 grafts i believe, i mean, DUT, minoxidil, stemoxydine and alfatradiol can only get a little of my hairline back, actually, i do notice some hairline growing back, but it can only do so much, but for anything behind my hairline, it has worked wonders. I would like more templates and hairline, i'd say 2000 grafts average. I'm a very good candidate, my donor area is intact, i don't have any crown problems, it is just the hairline where my problem is. I'm, considering Dr.Freitas and dr.Bisanga or Dr.Rahal. As soon as i get vaccinated, i will travel to do a hair transplant. IS just Dr.Rahal is closer, for the other two i would have to travel transcontinental.
  14. Hi @Cainhurst73 As Stephen has said, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. If you would like to share photos and relative information to my email address, it will be my pleasure to then discuss your case with Dr. Bisanga and provide relevant recommendations based on pictorial assessment. Any other questions, don’t hesitate to ask. ian@drchristianbisanga.com Thanks Ian
  15. I am very happy to be able to present the following result, currently at 7 months post surgery on behalf of the patient. The patient is already showing very good growth at this early stage with a very natural outcome and still has more to look forward to. Further updates will be provided over the next months. Goals of Surgery - Rebuild hairline, increase density behind hairline and into existing hair. Challenges - Direction of hair with slight cowlick in the hairline Total - 2507 Graft Graft Breakdown:- 1s 403 = 403 Hairs 2s 875 = 1750 Hairs 3s 1040 = 3120Hairs 4s 189 = 756 Hairs Total: 2507/6029 = 2.4 Average hair per graft. Pre-Surgery Placement Donor 7 Months All photos provided by the patient
  16. Whilst I agree with the 'not necessarily' caveat to your point, I certainly agree with the other posters point that a transplant from 10 years prior should hold up, especially under the use of a reductase inhibitor during that period. I also watched that live with Bisanga (who is one of my favourite doctors for clarity, not questioning his knowledge) but I was unsure if something got lost in explanation along the way as he made that point. The general wisdom from clinical evidence/studies/data and so on is that donor hair (assuming it was actually taken from the patients individual safe zone) should indeed act as it would had it never been relocated to the front of the scalp (as I'm sure you know). Most doctors who I've ever spoken to and have queried this with have all agreed and said that this is generally the case. To suggest otherwise is to suggest that the individual follicle itself isn't what's influenced by MPB or what caries the genetic trigger that sparks it so to speak, but instead that the specific area of the scalp is the underlying culprit. As such, the whole theory of donor dominance suddenly becomes contestable, but we know that there is a scientific consensus that this is not the case and that at the very least it is widely accepted that transplanted follicles do indeed retain their genetic resistance to DHT/androgens (other things such as hair characteristics in terms of waviness etc have been observed to change). Because of this, and the fact that the instagram live conversation in question was heavily intertwined with the use of meds and age related thinning of all hairs (including donor hair) if I recall correctly, I generally attributed what Bisanga was saying to mean that, should someone not use any meds after a HT and have just generally aged a bit, then they should be happy if it still looks good in comparison to their initial results 10 years later. It would be good to get some clarity on what he meant here though as it would seem his stance goes against conventional wisdom and I'd be interested to hear why he thinks so. Either way, there are countless surgeons who suggest these transplanted hairs should grow for life if everything was done correctly, but note that they will in all cases thin (shrink in diameter, but unrelated to MPB/androgen exposure) with age and that without the use of meds both they and your native hair have the potential to thin (directly from MPB/androgen exposure) over time leaving you with a lacklustre result down the road. Here's a video of Dr. Sethi saying as much:
  17. Not necessarily. Dr. Bisanga did recently say that if your transplant remains good for 10 years you should be happy. @BJ47 Was your first procedure FUT or FUE? Depending on your laxity you might be able to have another strip megasession (2-4k grafts). The more grafts you can harvest the more likely you can address both the frontal third and crown with your next procedure. I would take a serious look at Hasson & Wong for round 2.
  18. In this episode of "Bitesize with Bisanga", Dr. Bisanga discusses the experience of his patient´s and how they have achieved better results when combining oral minoxidil with topical finasteride.
  19. Hi, After your advice I contact Dr. De Freitas and I receive email from his clinic, the Dr evaluate 3000 grafts same as Dr Bisanga which is less then Dr BF that evaluate 3500-3700 I’m really considering Dr BF base on recommendation here in the forum. But don’t understand why there is a different on graft amount between the doctors something that I need to pay attention or reconsider the Dr ? And I asked Dr. De Freitas clinic who operate the surgery they said: The extraction is done by technicians, the implantation by the Dr is this is something that gives Dr. BF advantage over Dr. De Freitas since he does the extraction and the implication by himself?
  20. Bisanga is very very good but not doing better work than the whole industry. Do a quick search at the spanish forum and HRN and you will realize the best results are from Konior (stick&place), Dr. Couto (DHI) and Dr. Rafael De Freitas (DHI).
  21. @Fitamess who told this either hates you or is totally clueless. Turkey is the world capital of botched hair transplants. There are hundreds of hairmill clinics where underpaid technicians without a medical background (taxi drivers 1 month before doing your surgery) are doing surgery on several patients per day. You can be lucky to get a very experienced tech team and get a acceptable result or join the list of countless botched transplants that require a repair surgery with a propper Doctor. There was a Italian guy that actually died in one of these hairmills and was wrapped in towels. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9989033/Italian-man-mysteriously-dies-heart-attack-hair-transplant-operation-Turkey.html Hairmills copy results from great Doctors like Bisanga, Couto, De Freitas and post them on their website and social media. This is enough to capture uninformed patients looking for a cheap surgery. They have also schills that register at HRN with different usernames to promote their hairmills (very discretely to make it seem they are not schills). Any minute now a schill will be coming to this thread about a guy thinking of going to a hairmill in Instambul to insert the name of his hairmill in this thread. This happened at HRN just yesterday. ASMED is a hairmill with techs doing surgery on several patients per day with zero to little involvement from a Doctor. Several HRN members were left with a botched surgery and ASMED mistreated them. Academic is one of hundreds low cost hairmills. Aygin is not a Doctor I would ever recommend here’s one lf the reasons why: You need to start researching Doctors by looking at their real patients posting the results from day 1 to 12 months after surgery. Take a look at this table that will help you get started with your research. I highly advise you to start taking Finasteride 3x/week in order to stop your hairloss and strengthen your native hair (donor area). If you want a low cost Doctors you have Dr. Arika at Eugenix at 1.60€/graft. Extracting Manually or Motorized has no impact on the quality of end results. A good Doctor can do both types of extractions during the surgery depending on what the graft they are extracting requires. Wish you all the best and hope you stay clear of Turkey unless it’s go to Dr. Pekiner or Dr. Ozgur at HLC (or at least Dr. Bicer).
  22. 1 month checkin here. All going fine, the noggin obviously still doesn’t look so great at the moment but I’m working from home so hair appearance isn’t something to think about that much and I’ve bought myself a couple of hats that I like for when out and about - got quite used to wearing them actually. For the pictures note that I wasn’t completely bald in the central area of the recipient area before so that’s why there’s growth there. I’ve added the pictures taken at the clinic to better show the pre-HT situation in the previous post. Numbness Still numbness in the recipient area, bit of a weird feeling but not a big deal at all. Redness Still reasonably red but this is fully expected, I’ve seen on other stories from patients this can last for months, I think so far it looks better at this stage than others I’ve seen in this respect. Shedding The shedding of grafts has been different to expected, as I’ve heard people talk about it and then seen the picture of a lot less hair, so I kinda thought it all just went at the same time at a certain point. Perhaps obvious to others but it’s not so dramatic, it has just gradually thinned for me over the time. Also more grafts are still hanging in there than I expected at this time. Donor Area Is absolutely fantastic already, FUE is truly amazing in the right hands. Medication & Supplements I was on Finasteride for only about a month before the HT, as I mentioned I was trying a different approach to taking it (3mg per week) to avoid previous side effects and it was fine. However I have currently decided to stop taking it because I have started 2.5mg Oral Minoxidil and I just thought I’d like to see clearly what effect that has without any other factors, which I felt comfortable doing as I’d only just started Finasteride so wouldn’t lose any gains. I don’t know if this is the right move, as taking both would have a better effect - but I would like to see what Oral Minoxidil can do on it’s own. The reason is that I’d like to avoid taking Finasteride if possible, so want to see how it goes, it’s something that’s under consideration for me so will keep pondering on it. The shaved right down crown is looking quite weak when this area was always ok until a few months before the HT, so perhaps I will end up deciding it’s best to take action with the Finasteride on this after all. The 2.5mg Oral Minoxidil is just a tester to see how it goes, I will up to 5mg after maybe another month, as this was the prescribed dose. Oral Minoxidil is not that frequently taken by hairloss sufferers as far as I can tell but from my research (and Dr. Bisanga’s advice) it seems like the risk is minimal and frequently over-blown in forums. When it’s used for blood pressure, patients take 10-40mg, which is substantially more than the 2.5-5mg for hair loss. As a side-note I’ve always had big gaps on the cheeks for my beard (more hair not in the right place!), anecdotally I’ve heard that beard growth is a potential side-effect of Oral Minoxidil so it’d be fantastic if I do get some more growth there, fingers are crossed. I’m also taking 1mg Biotin and 1000mg of MSM and probably will for the year to support hair growth. Hair Weakness Something I haven’t enjoyed much is seeing the mid-scalp and crown growing back from being shaved right down (the non-HT or donor area). Pre-HT the hair in these areas seemed not too bad to me, it’s only when seeing it short like this I can see it’s actually pretty thin in these areas I’ve actually just looked at the BHR clinic photos for the first time just now and it’s possible to see the weakness of the mid-scalp and crown in the wet hair photo from the top of the head. I just didn’t spend much time looking at the top of my head with wet hair pre-HT haha, so it’s been a little bit of a shock. Not much to be done, I will have to see if the medication can keep the old follicles in these areas hanging on in there. It doesn’t look bad when long anyway so hopefully not too much to worry about for a while anyway. Anyway, onwards we go. The 1 month mark has come around quickly. See you at month 3 for more exciting pictures of my bonce! haha EDIT: I am just realising how different hair appears under different lighting - so I want to add one more photo in full harsh daylight so anyone considering their first HT has a full idea of what 1 month could look like.
  23. In this episode of "Bitesize with Bisanga", Dr. Bisanga discusses how and why many of his patients are able to achieve early growth following a hair transplant procedure.
  24. Contact Dr. Bisanga @Raphael84 he’s not in Germany but close in Belgium.
