Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

  1. If you haven't heard any honest reviews in over 7 years, they probably don't exist. Best to research another surgeon with actual reviews. It's already been mentioned here before, but if you're in Texas look at Dr. Arocha.
  2. Hey guys, Dr. Arocha has been gracious enough to answer some of our communities questions. Dr. Arocha has had some out of the park results from @Steeeve and had some good PRP success with @Mycroft. Now is your chance to pick his brain and ask him anything, he has is ear to the ground and knows about all of the latest hair loss treatments, including exosome therapy etc. He performs both FUE and FUT, if you have questions relating to that ask away!
  3. I had fut 3000 with Dr. Arocha four years ago. Having a second procedure this month (April 2020) to focus on midscalp and fut scar. Pleased with the hairline!
  4. Hello all! I have my second hair transplant scheduled with Dr. Arocha this month. First one was a FUT 3000 four years ago and this month will be a FUE. My first transplant went very well and the results were a big boost to my confidence and appearance so I’m looking forward to my next procedure. To Dr. Arocha: I’ve heard that the 2nd hair transplant takes a bit longer to get the full result. Is this typically the case? If so, how long will it take for the full result? Any difference between fut and fue in terms of the timeline? Also, I will be having grafts implanted in my previous donor scar. Is there any difference in graft survival rate in this area than the rest of the scalp? Thanks Doc!
  5. Hair Max is labor intensive. You have to leave it in an area for 4 seconds, move an inch, do the same, until you do the whole head. I once held a LaserBand and fell accidentally. The thing broke to pieces. I thought of it more as a toy than anything else. I actually use LaserCap. It is by prescription only. There are studies on the cap and it carries a lifetime guarantee. Call Dr. Arocha or Dr. Alexander. They are providers.
  6. Dr. Arocha, I am curious about PRP and how it is best utilized. I’m not exactly sure how to best phrase the question so I’ll try a couple of different ways and see if any make sense. Is PRP a time sensitive therapy in that it works best for patient’s in early stages of balding? Can PRP “wake up” follicles that have been inactive for long periods of time? Personally, I feel like my hair has stabilized with Propecia over the past two years and wonder when an optimal time to consider a PRP treatment might be. Could it be that the longer I wait, the chances I will see a noticeable improvement will diminish? Thanks, Ian
  7. Hi Melvin, Absolutely. I'll record Dr. Arocha answering some of these questions a bit later today. Kira
  8. Thank you for answering Dr. Arocha, if you don’t mind filming your responses, we can make a YouTube video and reach a bigger audience who want to know the same information.
  9. Hello aaron1234, Dr. Arocha here. Thank you so much for your very thoughtful question. In the initial graft survival study for FUE procedure - it revealed that survival was at about 60%. With refinements and individual enhancement and the development of experience, these FUE yields have increased to within 10% or equal to FUT yields. Let me know if you have any more questions. Best, Doc
  10. Hi all - I'll have Dr. Arocha jump on this afternoon to answer these! Thanks so much for your thoughtful questions. Looking forward to hearing what Dr. Arocha has to say.
  11. Thanks Melvin! I don’t have any questions but I’m eager to read Dr. Arocha’s responses!
  12. This patient came to Dr. Arocha with severe thinning. He was an AGA NW4v. He had a total of 4500 grafts transplanted in a total of two FUT procedures. The before images were taken immediately following his first procedure. The after results were taken 1.5 years after his second transplant. 1st Transplant: 3000 grafts 2nd Transplant: 1500 grafts Please note: the backgrounds are different because Dr. Arocha converted his photo studio into a professional studio over the course of this patient's transplant journey.
  13. Dr. Arocha, I've seen cases where a patient will go to one clinic, get poor growth, then go to a different clinic for a procedure of the same technique but get good growth. So the physiology of the patient isn't to blame, but outcomes can be wildly different. What aspects of a hair transplant are most critical to ensure good yield for patients?
  14. Thanks for doing this Melvin and Dr. Arocha! Dr. A, in your opinion has FUE yield rates improved to the levels seen with FUT? If so, what factors have contributed to this improvement? Thanks!
  15. I use LaserCap for a number of reasons. There are studies available. It is by prescription only and it carries a lifetime guarantee. Call Dr. Arocha in Houston, he is a provider.
  16. This patient under went a combination FUE/FUT procedure at Arocha Hair Restoration. Dr. Arocha utilizes the smallest possible punch – as small as a .7-millimeter punch in his manual FUE work. For this particular patient, we used a .8-millimeter punch because of the follicle curvature underneath the dermis. The “before” images were taken immediately following his procedure. You will notice sutures in the upper left and right from the FUT. This patient underwent a combination FUT/FUE procedure to maximize his donor yield. Both techniques are good and sometimes it takes both to maximize a patient’s result. He came back in four days and the patient was already healed, but he indicated no visible punches on Day 2 of his recovery. Will continue to update as he comes in for his follow-ups.
  17. Hello all. I came across a product called Viviscal while doing research on PRP for hair loss (a hair transplant doctor mentioned Viviscal while answering the question about PRP). Now the first thing that came to my head was that pills for hair loss aren't going to do anything unless they're Finasteride. I also looked into it on this forum and found similar viewpoints. However, I also did some research on clinical studies using Viviscal, and they seem to show things like a great increase in the number of terminal hairs. There are several clinical studies showing these results, so I'm wondering if maybe Viviscal DOES actually do something? Just wondering if anyone had any ideas on it. I'm thinking I'm at least going to try it out and see, there is a 3-month money-back offer up right now, so I figure there's nothing to lose. I understand that Viviscal is mostly vitamins that you can get a ton cheaper in a multivitamin, but at the same time it has this "AminoMar" thing that may be what makes the difference between it and vitamins. And as a sidenote, is there anyone here who is fighting hair loss through the use of regular PRP treatments? I only ever got one PRP treatment from Dr. Arocha when I got my hair transplant with him two years ago, but I'm really wanting to take the fight to AGA and am glad to say I am at the place in my life where I have the monetary resources to pay for an initial "booster" of PRP treatments (1 every month for 4 months) and maintenance treatments every 6 months. Do any regular PRP guys on here see appreciable results from doing PRP every 6 months? Thanks in advance.
  18. This african american patient in his early 30s came to Dr. Arocha to restore his hairline. He had a receding and thinning hairline and frontal area. Dr. Arocha and team did a small, 1500 graft FUE procedure to restore the hairline. The after images were taken just 5 months after his procedure, creating an already noticeable difference. 19. Hello all, I finally bit the bullet. To give everyone a rundown I’m 39 years old this year. I live out of Austin, TX but I’m from closer to the Houston area. I started thinning when I was 18 and I tried everything to slow down the process, admittedly without a lot of knowledge back then. This was 1998 and I didn’t know much about propecia or minoxidil. I tried shampoos and all kinds of gimmicks. I did try propecia and minoxidil liquid but because I didn’t know enough about it and didn’t see immediate results I just stopped and got on with my life. It all started in my crown and then over the course of a decade marched its way forward toward my hairline. While my crown was very noticeably thin my hairline and frontal third stayed noticeably strong until my mid to semi late 20’s. At 24 I went and had my first consultation at a Bosley clinic in Houston and the whole experience made me feel uneasy. The doctor wasn’t really concerned with my crown which is where all the thinning was happening and wanted to lower my hairline which was still a teenage hairline. It was less than four fingers down on my forehead and still really thick. Ah, how I miss that wall of hair... lol. I politely passed but they called me every single day for two years straight trying to get me to come in for the transplant. They wanted to charge me 20K to lower my hairline and sprinkle some grafts in the crown. Knowing what I know now I think back about how they didn’t even bother to mention propecia to help slow loss. Bullet. Dodged. I got married in 2010 which ended really badly very soon after and my hair really started to go after that. Around 2012 I went to Dr Brad Limmer and got on Propecia/biotin/minoxidil foam to slow things down. Sadly he passed away the next year almost to the day of my consultation with him. I’m an actor and I was staying in Houston with a friend in 2014 while filming a movie in Louisiana when someone mentioned Dr. Arocha. I scheduled a consultation and we immediately got on very well. I loved his attitude, how much knowledge he wanted to share, that he was very honest about what we could achieve. I was traveling a lot though and it just wasn’t the right time to pull the trigger. While I traveled around the states for jobs I would schedule consultations with other doctors. I spoke with Feller and Bloxham, Gabel, Hasson and Wong, and others-some through email, FaceTime, in person. Ultimately it came down to me feeling the most comfortable with Arocha although Gabel was pretty close. I’m a diffused thinner and if my father and maternal grandfather are any indication I’m going to end up a 6 on the Norwood’s scale. I was going to go ahead with the procedure last year but my wife (I got married again in 2017) and I found out we were pregnant with twins so I decided to wait until things settled down with them. Side note: I did not stop taking finasteride when we found out we were pregnant and our babies our beautiful and healthy and at the time of this post almost 6 months old. The Big Day! I got to Arocha’s office a little after 7:30 am (traffic in Houston sucks) I signed the paperwork. We took some preop pics. Dr Arocha designed the hairline basically within my existing one. The plan was to work through the existing hairline, fill in the temple corner recession, and bulk up the frontal forelock. We discussed what we would do next year, reassess the front or go ahead and work on the crown. Everybody was really nice. I was visibly nervous and my blood pressure was a little high due to my being a little antsy. The Valium quickly helped out with that. When they were injecting the numbing solution into the back of my scalp I noticed I started shaking and feeling queasy so I spoke up immediately. They turned me over and raised my legs and put ice on my chest. I almost immediately felt better. Dr Arocha was there and cracked a joke about how I was his first patient of the day but probably his 7000th patient altogether so there was really nothing to worry about. TBH I wasn’t nervous about his ability to help me as much as I was just nervous about this giant step I was taking. After this procedure there was no going back. I turned back over when I was ready and they took the strip out. They kept complementing me on how good my donor was however I never got a number from them. I asked but they were just like, “don’t worry, it’s really really good.” I believe I heard say as they were looking at it that it looked like 80 to 90. Dr Arocha started to make the incisions and we talked for awhile before I dozed off and the next thing I know is I’m waking up to salmon kabobs, a killer salad, and potato and black bean soup. I eat up and then I go back to the chair where the techs start to insert the grafts. We chat for quite awhile. Dr Arocha was there for quite a bit of it as he would interject in our conversations. Every once in a while he would remind them about this or that concerning my grafts. I dozed off again and when I woke up we were basically done. They informed me that while I was out they put PRP all over my head. They went over cleaning instructions and we took some post op pics. My wife came in to pick me up and everyone came out to meet our twins. After that we were off and back to Austin. The ride back was pretty rough. There was a lot of pressure in my head and I got a pretty bad headache. Even with the pain pills. It didn’t even last the entire three hour drive though. I’m attaching some pics. Some preop through day two. I don’t have any pics with the design yet. I’m going to speak to Arocha’s office and see if I can get my hands on the hairline design.
  20. You've been given good advice, never base your decision on cost or location. Always go by results. There are some quality surgeons in the South like Dr. Arocha in Houston, Dr. Cooley in NC and Dr. Vories in SC.
  21. Dr. Arocha, Bernstein and Dr. Glenn Charles opened up today on a limited basis. I believe more and more clinics will begin opening. In California, the governor is saying the state will begin opening in the next few days.
  22. This patient came to Dr. Arocha to restore his crown with a hair transplant. Our team performed a 2500 FUT (strip) procedure in the crown. The after images were taken 14 months after his procedure. Before: After: Immediately after his procedure: After: Before: After:
  23. This patient underwent a PRP treatment with Dr. Arocha. The after images were taken one year after his treatment. The patient was thinning in spite of taking finasteride, so Dr. Arocha recommended PRP treatment. Dr. Arocha has developed his PRP program over the last decade.
  24. Two days ago, on the 16th, I hit 1 YEAR!! 1 year. It’s hard to believe. What a ridiculous year it has been. My twins turned 1 year old. I turned 40. The world continues to fight an ongoing pandemic. I lost my job. My wife and I haven’t split up due to ALL the continued time we are around one another-I mean, you know, we like each other. OH YEAH!! I had a hair transplant! Let’s talk about that. I believe these hairs are continuing to mature. I noticed a little bit of shed of the transplanted hairs last week. Just a little. They were so much thicker than the natural hairs. Those hairs are a little thinner. The interesting thing about the transplanted hairs that broke off is that they weren’t that long. When I get my hair wet and let it fall in front of my face they come down below my brow. The broken hairs were 2 and a half, maybe 3 inches long. There was a difference in what my hairline looked like last week versus this week. It’s thicker, obviously, and I believe it will continue to get thicker over the next few months. I don’t expect a lot of change during those months but I’ll still post an update every few months or so until the 18 month mark. PICTURES! Always pictures. I have a few. Different lighting, as always. Dry hair, wet hair, scar. Let’s start off with the scar and then move on the the good stuff. That right side reeeeally widened up. I can still hide it with a grade 5 on my clippers. I haven’t tried with a 4 but those hairs are so thick back there. I feel like I could but if you’ve been following along with my journey you know I typically like to keep my hair longer. It does not bother me and I plan to have one more strip. At least Moving on. Bathroom lighting really shows that the center of my hairline didn’t thicken up the way I was hoping it would and honestly I plan to readdress the whole right side of my hairline at some point. I don’t mind the asymmetrical shape of my hairline. I just want it to be stronger. It’s still great post transplant but, you know, hair greed. As always, no product is in my hair. I’m going to post a separate update with both dermmatch and hair fibers...cause holy crap...It makes a difference. Not the kind I’ll go out of my way very often for though. This isn’t how I typically have been styling my hair. It’s got some length on top and I’ve been letting it fall over to one side. All I did here was smooth it back with my hands to get it out of my face. This is how it normally falls. Either way, I won’t complain. A few months ago I went to what was once one of the 30 popular watering holes around Austin and I jumped in the water. When I came out a friend who knows I had a hair transplant said, “Holy Sh*t, dude! Your f@cking hair is like a wall!!” I didn’t believe it. They took some pics but they didn’t really turn out well so I did what I could to recreate it. What I got was a little potato-y but here you go. It looks nice. Solid. Then I run a brush through it and it’s like, “oh yeah. That’s more like it...” I mean, look at where I started from. Is it as thick as I would like? Nah. But I look at the gains compared to where I was pre surgery. It’s there. I’m happy. I’ll address it down the line. Here’s under the ring light with the over head light on and the shades open. Wet under the ring light. So, here’s the deal. I’m not happy with how my density is when my hair is wet. Will I ever be, though? I’m destined to to be a Norwood 6 one day. All I can do is chase it at this point. I can throw more grafts in there to fight it but I think my next step is to address my hairline again and fill in my crown. These next pics were taken a month ago to the day, and I believe that the weaker hairline here has really worked itself out, but my hairline is still a little weaker on my right side versus my left. This is what I would like to address along with my crown so that the density in my hairline matches a little closer to my right moving forward. I would just like to add that this is not something I blame my doctor for. I was considerably thinner on my right side than on the left. I had an idea that I would need a second pass to address this, however, the optimistic side of me did hope that it could be fixed in the first pass. I was working with 2500 grafts though. Filling in (or closing in) my crown to give it some nice bulk and another pass to my hairline are my next moves before worrying about density because at the end of the day I don’t get in water all that much. How most people will ever see me is with my hair dry. I want to save as many grafts for future hair loss as I still started with quite a bit of hair. This is my opinion. When my hair is dry and styled it is amazing and I know with time and future transplants it will only get better. I plan to get more work done in the future but as it stands who knows when that will be. I consider this to be a total success and one hundred percent recommend Dr. Arocha. I think my hair is incredible. I will go to him for another strip. I plan to utilize SMP, as well, to help further camouflage as I believe that this will help, along with further transplants. Once I feel I’m done with strip I’ll move on to FUE. Google Dr. Arocha’s website. Look at his gallery of of FUT patients. I’m patient 80. I plan to update again in three months and then again in 6 months at the 18 month mark. Unless by some miracle I’m able to have moved forward with another procedure.🤷🏼‍♂️ I hope this post finds everyone healthy and, somewhat, happy. There’s a lot going on in the world right now. I personally know 6 people who’ve contracted Covid-19. Here in Texas and in NYC. Another friend passed away two weeks ago. He was young. I’m sure that number will rise. I know that hair can be all-encompassing important to this community but don’t do anything to jeopardize your health. Your hair is not worth it. As always. I’ll be around. Be good people. ✌🏻
  25. This woman came in to Dr. Arocha with extensive female pattern ludwig III thinning. She wanted a PRP treatment. Dr. Arocha recommended a high-powered LaserCap Pro for 30 minutes every other day in addition to a PRP session and 5% Rogaine. The after images are showing her results at her follow up visit at 17 months after her initial PRP treatment. She has only had one PRP treatment.
