Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. Dr. Bloxham, just for my understanding: You just mixed up FUT and FUE, right? If I am correct, than let me ask some questions: - Is there really no reson to perform more than 2500 grafts (your definition of a megasession) as a FUE? Meaning: If you need > 2500 grafts you should do FUT even if you are a bad candidate or you shouldn't do any surgery? Or is the meaning of this sentence, that there can't be any medical resons not to have a FUT? - What is below that threshold of 2500? Why is your threshold so much different from that of Dr. Feller (he mentioned around 500 grafts). Or did I make a misinterpretation of your post or Dr. Fellers post regarding this thresholds?
  2. I think you have a point here. FUT might look cruel to some people and they prefer FUE for that reason. Personally, I have gone to many (!) much more pain from injuries and surgeries than any FUT will cause (according to all sources I have). What many (including me) fear is the stigma of a hair transplant. Even though times are changing a strip scar (if visible) is recognized by every laymen (to stick with Dr. Feller's words) as a sign of hair surgery. This can lead to negative aspects in social live or business live. FUE scars (even if visible) or not as clearly related to a hair transplant for a laymen. Just watch the NBA finals, Steph Curry (who never had a hair transplant) looks like he has FUE scars from distance. In reality it is just his curly hair with a fade cut.
  3. So many patients come online or call the office with worries about their growth rate. Here is a video that includes an explanation and video of an actual patient who experienced slow hair growth after HT. It has a happy ending. Feller and Bloxham Great Neck, NY 516-487-3797
  4. Dr. Feller, He said he does maximum of 2500 grafts per day (FUE). Other doctors perform similar number of grafts per day with FUE but they can also do 2 subsequent days and transplant 5000 grafts in 2 days, making it a virtually one procedure as far as the patient is concerned. Dr. Erdogan does just that. He transplants up to 3000 grafts per day but can do 5000 grafts in 2 consecutive days.
  5. There are two Konior postings today. The other is a six-year result. Both beautiful, as we all expect. But I noticed the questions in both about FUE or FUT. Maybe this stems from the recent Feller "Why NOT to do FUE" thread. Not to go off topic, but I think Dr. Konior's postings show a preference for FUT. That isn't meant as criticism. I only wonder what he would say about that recent discussion. Again, I'm sorry if this is off the topic. This result is inspiring.
  6. Another great easy to understand video. Dr. Feller I know you take a lot of heat and insults by being so involved in these threads, but these threads even-though controversial are some of the most educational. Thank You.
  7. Dr. Feller, I need a relatively small procedure of about 1000-1500 grafts and I greatly prefer keeping my donor area shaved to a grade 1-2 (or whatever the lowest is that I can go without showing scarring). In my case, is FUE not a good option considering the low number of grafts and the desire to wear my hair at a shorter length? I read this entire thread and essentially I would be making the decision to sacrifice a percentage of grafts (likely <10% if going to a top-rated surgeon) in order to achieve my goals of restoring density and being able to wear hair cut shorter on the sides. Is that correct?
  8. Dr. Feller, while you're paying attention to this thread. I'm experiencing some nasty shock loss around my scar at three months still. I'm now just starting to see some hairs poke through In your experience at what point does this usually recover ?
  9. It had been years since this patient had a hairline or any real density on the top of his head. His goal was to rebuild his hairline and thicken the top. Dr. Feller decided to hold off on doing his whole crown so that he could focus all the density in the front in top. Dr. Feller implanted 3,000 grafts into those areas and here are his results 3 years later. Patient is now ready to fill the back of the crown. Enjoy! Tara, HT technician for Feller Medical, PC BEFORE
  10. Dr. Feller, this is a dicussion forum. I am discussing in a nice and approbriate manner. Please do the same. There is nothing in my posts, which gives you a reason or even a justicfication to get as offensive as you do. "You are uninformed and your posts are misleading." Please tell me, where I have given false or misleading information! "You have: Never performed a surgery. Never seen one performed. Probably never even met a person on whom a procedure was performed, Have no medical training. Have no actual medical experience. Have no intimate knowledge of what's going on." Where do you get this information from? Some of these statesments are clearly wrong. "I perform both procedures, and even a third, and can tell you with force that FUE is a bad idea for a megassion if you have the choice to have an FUT." Where is this coming from? I never, ever (!) said that FUE is the better option for megasessions. You must confuse me with someone else. P.S. And actually, you are only (!) discussion laymen here. This is (!) a forum for laymen or better patients. What I fear is that because of your aggresive behavior no other clinic will join.
  11. Dr. Feller, at first, I am hardly an uninformed patient. Maybe I am not a hair transplant professional, but I think I know much more than the average person having a hair transplant And I think many users in here are very well informed as well. Secondly, I see a waste of grafts as a bad thing. But I have a hard time to see the similarities between a clinic which on purpose (!) throwing grafts away and a clinic performing FUE. Throwing grafts ways (without any medical indication) is just plain wrong an unethical. No reason for a debate at all. FUE vs. FUT is a matter of math. How much is the difference in growth (and potential damage for further procedures) and how much do I bother to have a strip scar. If the clinic doesn't give rightfull information (that FUT will have a better result in average), this is also unethical. But having an FUE on a patient per se is not unethical. Actually, I can be even the better method depending on the number of grafts. The debate is: Which number is this? 500? 1000? 1500? 2000?
  12. Dear Mav, I do not believe this was a bluff. Actually, I belive Dr. Feller, that he is as passionate about this topic as it appears here. Unfortunately, I do not believe that another clinic would agree. This could be great value for many user in this forum, but it could also end in a big mess and slugfest. The clinics would have nothing to gain, but much to lose. That is why I asked also "to keep it clean". But I have send Dr. Feller my name anyway, as he promised to not disclose it. Let us see how other clinics react.
  13. Dr. Feller, I think in general you are right with this statement. Many patients and folks in the the internet get out of their mind. I think this is human nature. But, if you refer to the case in this forum, which I also have posted in, you have missed also some points. - The clinic itself was posting within this thread and failed to give information (e. g. medical reasons) - It is the duty of the clinic to explain to the client (and make sure he understands) that there are (!) medical reasons. By the way, if any (I am not saying they are) of the claims are correct (like asking for money during surgery or throwing away grafts without any medical indication) this is (!) indeed highly unethical. Especialy the number of grafts discussed in this particular case, are a significant %-tage of the overall available graft count. As hard as you fight for FUT over FUE because of density and available grafts, you should be shocked if such a number of grafts would be wasted.
  14. Hello! Dr. Feller has released a good video on Youtube called "For Hair transplant Doctors ONLY" (I watched it anyway as I am a rebel ) and in it he mentions that a tight scalp is BETTER for having a thin scar after FUT. I was shocked and thought I'd misheard. I would have thought a tight one was more likely to pull the two sides apart and stretch the scar. Can anybody who knows more than me about the subject (won't be that hard) explain to me how this is the case as Dr. Feller did not explain why and I can't find an answer on Google.
  15. Rappy lol the reality of this thread? You mean the biased bullshit from old school doctors too lazy to perform FUE? Do you mean the doctors who pay to be on this website and all have an agenda? Do you mean all of the guys who already got stuck with a strip scar so they say well it was good enough for me it's good enough for you? Look up some Dr. Diep or HDC results on here and be blown away. This guy's results inspired me to have a FUE procedure from a doctor in Mexico who charges 1/5th the price Feller does and it turned out to be the best thing i ever did.
  16. Sorry, I answer in here, cause the other thread was closed. Unfortuantely, I have been on a business tripp and could not access the forum (as I do not like to use the company computer). Please apollogize for the late reaction. Like i mentionen before: If you agree to the conditions which I send by PM and stated in the forum, I would love to be part in this. Please, Dr. Feller, I did not spoke "out of turn". You (!) mentionend two clincis, which (by chance) I had visited before. This is what I wrote: QUOTE: "I second this choice of surgeons. Personally I had a consultation with two of them in the past, and going to have a further consultation up soon with one of them. My questions will be after the ongoing discussion here: - Why did they not recommend FUT but FUE for my case exactly (the gave some explanatio but I will deep dive and ask again). - Which number of grafts is there borderline between FUE and FUT (in average) in their opinion. By the way and without judging the methods by this statement: Both of them told me that their majority of work is FUE today. Only one mentioned a number (or maybe from only one I recall) and it was > 90 %. " END OF QUOTE Furthermore, there is nothing to "ommit". I even gave some specifics to my case, after a poster asked me, why I am going for second visit: QUOTE"Because I am a difficult case (DPA with bad hair/skin contrast and low hairline), I am planning carefully. I have to decide between several options to start (Front and top, only front, only front in a very conservative way). FUT or FUE depends also on the options I pick. Therefore I am going back to check, after now 2 years on meds, how stable the loss is and which option is best." END OF QUOTE. Like mentioned before, I am happy to have such a discussion. I am happy to give you (!) my name, if it is not publised online. But my conditions was also to "keep it clean", if the clinic opts in or out. I do not want to be part in a slugfest. I will ask the clinic I visit this questions anyway, but I admit that with your knowledge the discussion would be much more valuable.
  17. I could make a list of several guys who've had failed FUT's a list does nothing there are to many variables to compare results, there is no surgery that is 100% guaranteed, i can recall a time where you specifically referenced a thread and said something like "this is so called growth" the poster wasn't even unhappy with his results, this is totally uncalled for I could do the same thing but I choose not to, several guys have less hair loss than I did and have had more grafts with FUT and may not have the same appearance, is it the procedure itself? or could it be other variables, like maybe they have thinner hair caliber a bigger head etc. Regardless as a hair loss sufferer I know how terrible hair loss can be and I would never stoop to this level to prove my point, this does nothing other than create an environment where guys who've had impressive results start bashing other guys with less visually pleasing results just to justify their procedures. I admit in 2015 I bit the bait, I was heavily involved in that thread, I stay away now for the most part until I see blatant digs at other members for the sake of argument, to be fair I don't believe Dr. Feller has done this because he his a hair loss sufferer himself and knows how sensitive one can be when it comes to hair. Maybe it was just Dr. Bloxham being ignorant on the matter, but from the outside looking in it appeared as Yaz putting up a picture of his hair and not saying anything negative towards the doctor but simply stating he couldn't have this hairstyle with FUT, then his pictures were retrieved from his thread with a comment like "this is what you really look like", to me this is no different than if I were to post a photo of myself hair done and layered and then someone posting a photo of me where my hair may have been greasy and under direct sunlight and saying this what you really look like, to me that would be a blatant dig and would certainly upset me and rightfully so, I don't condone how Yaz reacted by using foul language but I do feel posting his photo was uncalled for and insinuating it looks worse now since that photo was only 2,500 grafts. I don't post as often but felt compelled to post because this upset me and I'm not even Yaz .
  18. Dr Feller & Blake is it possible to get some clarity Quote: 2014, Dr Feller actually does quite a bit of FUE. Generally around 2 cases a week. He's also been doing it for 14 years. He's also invented FUE devices, new techniques, etc Dr Feller or Blake can you address these questions. 1. Is it possible for you or Dr Feller to provide some FUE results? Is Dr Feller still performing 2 cases per week? I still have a hard time find many results (on any forums) based on my extended research. Also if you could include some larger cases that would be even better (2500-5000) graft FUE results from Dr. Feller. Just one larger case would be great to FINALLY view. 2. Dr Feller can you comment on how many FUE cases have you personally performed? Based Blake's information provided from 2014 and given holidays sick days etc. you would be performing 75-90 FUE cases per year? Is that figure accurate? 3. MFUE is there any results or updates that you could please post. Extraction sites etc.. Thanks,
  19. Dr. Feller, Before we continue I'd like to say thank you for your time in this. The price of FUT in Europe has dropped so low compared to what or where? It seems to be only slightly less than what NA doctors are charging for strip so I don't see how this relates to your point about the number of techs in these clinics. In the grand scheme of things it is essentially the same. Will you please answer the question I asked you in an earlier post? How did you come to this conclusion?
  20. Dr. Feller, Thanks for your input. No feelings hurt. I'll address your comments below: 1. I failed to mention the pics from today were after a shower, damp hair, under bright lighting. To the untrained eye I have received no abnormal look and my new barber does not have a clue. In fact, when I told him, he was so surprised I had anything done. Very different experience from post-FUT. The second two pics are from today (1.5 years post-FUE) with my hair dry. 2. I have not noticed any FUE scarring. Yes, I admit my donor area looks slightly less dense, but that's to me only and to a doctor with 20+ years of HT experience. My hair is longer not to cover scarring, but because my current FUE hairline allows me to slick my hair back and I prefer my sides to be longer to compliment the hairline. I leave it longer by choice. 3. I had FUT from a well respected coalition doctor. What is your definition of a "proper FUT"? You even said in your other post that: "I saw your linear scar and it looked good to me." 4. It is unfair to mislead the public saying, "they BOTH state they CAN shave their head". Please let me know where I stated this. 5. It's unfair to mislead the public saying, "they cannot bring themselves to have a proper FUT procedure performed out of fear of the actual surgery involved with strip." If you read my FUE experience linked in my signature, I state that I thought FUE was more painful than FUT. I would gladly do another FUT if it wasn't for the linear scar. Looking forward to your response.
  21. I have been gradually losing my hair for the past 20 years. I always wanted to get a hair transplant but was afraid. Last year I decided to do it and began researching Doctors. After much research and a recommendation from my hair stylist I decided to visit Dr Bernstein. I was examined by his assistant who told me I was a great candidate. He then called in Dr. Bernstein who agreed as well so I booked my appointment with him. The day finally arrived and I arrived at his office 7am excited and ready to go. He explained the procedure again and I went into the room. He then began examining my hair and to my surprise he told me he was unable to do the procedure because I had alopecia areata. Well needless to say I was shocked and dissappointed but thanked him for his honesty. He told me that I should get a series of injections once a month and my hair may grow back. I decided to go to my local dermatologist for the injections. After the 5th one my dermatologist believed that I was misdiagnosed and if I wanted to be certain he could take a sample of my scalp and hair follicles and send them to a specialized lab to be diagnosed. I agreed. Two weeks later the results were in and I had male pattern baldness. I then called and emailed Dr. Berstein to ask if he would reconsider. Neither he nor his office never responded ( very unprofessional ). I began doing some more research and found Dr. Feller and decided to have a consultation with him. Unlike Dr. Bernstein he has a great bedside manner and was very easy to talk to. He told me that I was a great candidate and I booked my surgery date. I just had my surgery done July 21, 2015 2500 grafts strip procedure. It was an amazing experience. His staff was very professional and caring. Dr. Feller is very passionate about his work and it shows. The entire experience was positive. Dr. Feller I can not thankyou enough and I am looking forward to seeing the fruits of your labor.
  22. The comments by Yaz were unnecessary but we're all adults here. Is it really necessary to create such drama over some foul language by an anonymous poster? Dr. Feller, you made a lot of assumptions based on my statement about FUE in Europe being cheaper but I think you misunderstood me. I was not saying it is cheaper than FUT in Europe, it is cheaper than FUE in North America but it is more expensive that FUT in Europe. The discrepancy is actually quite shocking. In NA the price for strip is about 4 or 5 dollars a graft at better clinics. FUE in NA is about 8 to 10 dollars per graft. In Europe, strip is about 3 or 4 euros per graft but FUE is in the range of 4 to 6 euros per graft.
  23. I don't like to comment on specific cases because it could hurt that persons feelings, but since you are the one posting the photos and asking me specifically to comment then I will: First, it is disingenuous to use photos where the hair has been cut to different lengths. Obviously the reason you left the hair longer in todays photo was to cover the scars left by your old linear scar AND the FUE scars. Also Your donor hair is obviously thinner in todays pictures due to the classic damage and thinning large FUE cases typically cause. You have large patchy areas that are visible, particularly on your right side, despite the fact that you admittedly left the hair longer AND are on Propecia. So to answer your question I would prefer the FUT because: 1. I know the hair would grow better in the recipient site. 2. All of my hair would be from the safe zone. 3. I would have more hair in the donor area because less would have been injured or killed. 4. I would not have patchy thin areas in the donor. 5. I would be able to completely cover my donor scar If you had a proper FUT procedure for your second surgery you donor area would be thicker, you'd have more donor graft available for future use, and your scar would be just as invisible at the length you yourself prefer to cut your hair at. Please see the conversation I and Dr. Bloxham recently had with another FUE patient like yourself named Yaz. He made the same argument you are trying to make. He claimed there was no way an FUT surgery could have allowed him to enjoy his current hairstyle. Then we showed him not only was that not true, but the FUT would have allowed him to enjoy an even more revealing hairstyle, with less injury to the skin, less scarring, a greater chance for growth in the recipient area, and more grafts available in the future. The Yaz conversation starts at post number 18 in the following link. He too wasted his time on FUE when he could have gotten a better more reliable result with FUT AND had less donor scarring and more grafts available for the future. When he realized this he disappeared from the thread: http://www.hairrestorationnetwork.com/eve/186983-why-not-get-fue-interview-dr-willaim-reed-dr-feller-bloxham-2.html
  24. With respect, I find the vast majority of your arguments extremely tangential and facile. They simply do not hold water, Dr. Feller. For example, you make a categorical statement that "most people who don't want strip are simply afraid of surgical harvest but don't want to admit it." First, this is unquestionable nonsense. Whether one is afraid of being punctured 2500 times by a surgical tool versus having a strip of flesh removed seems to be substantively very similar. Second, you state that "f a megasession FUE is performed you can't shave your hair down anymore than an FUT patient would." I am very surprised you promulgate such an obscure statement on an open forum. This is complete nonsense, and I believe that you know this. You cannot counter the following point, no matter how hard you try. Many patients do not want to have a large, unsightly, multi-inch scar, prone to stretching, run across the back of their heads. No matter what you say, nor how often you attempt your arguments on these forums, you cannot seem to accept that a scar is just that. It is unsightly and prevents a future patient from shaving down or even having a short buzz-cut. In closing, both FUE and FUT have positive and negative associated elements. I do not argue that an FUE patient may have as many future follicular units compared with an FUT patient. This statement, however, fails to account for people who may only need a maximum of 3500 total lifetime grafts. Of course an individual who needs 6000 follicular units is a likely better FUT candidate. I think every forum poster concedes that particular point. I do not wish to come off strident, but it seems unfair that you do not concede the issues surrounding unsightly strip scars. Once you admit that, and I believe that you will do so eventually if I continue to pester you about the topic, we can say our goodbyes and wish each other well. It's a beautiful day here in Vancouver. I am heading outside with my lovely girlfriend and my 1 millimetre haircut. No hat to hide that giant strip scar, Dr. Feller! ;-)
  25. I didn't see anything to lock the thread over and certainly some were being overly sensitive, but no new ground was being covered and very few doctors are going to be prepared to shed new light or their own opinion in the debate with someone as headstrong and opinionated as Dr. Feller, for better or worse. Even Feller has being quoted as saying the tools and methodology aren't as important as results, and I think there are plenty of fantastic surgeons both FUT and FUE cases for people to look at here and elsewhere to make up their own minds. Certainly for me I looked at thousands and didn't feel I was going to get a better result than going with Erdogan, regardless of the method.
