Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. Work looks good, I'm sure you'll be a happy man come next year. Word of advice though, I'm in a somewhat similar situation as you, except I'm a few years older and my loss is a little bit less severe than yours was here, but you should really re-consider the use of fin. You said you only realised you were losing hair 3 years ago - what do you expect to happen in another 3? Even if it slows down and you're still ok in 5 years, you're pretty much guaranteed to lose more hair as time goes on and no one knows to what extent. Maybe you'll run out of donor, who knows. Not to mention the aspect of potentially chasing your hair-loss through surgery every X amount of years and having the financial and emotional burdens (recovery time etc) that this will incur. Just a thought, I see no reason not to give it a go and see how you get on. I understand you're afraid of sides but you should go and look at all of the long term clinical studies on finasteride. There are a fair few, up to the span of 10 years, with thousands of participants collectively involved - you can look up the incidence of side effects vs placebo, drop out rate due to sides etc and gain a more rational understanding of the likelihood and actual severity of side effects as opposed to reading horror stories in the echo chambers that are most hair loss forums. No one who is rational is saying sides don't exist, of course there's a possibility, albeit statistically slim. But if you took it and were really are convinced you truly had sides, then just stop taking it. The idea that they can be permanent has no scientific proof, and even if this was true (which I obviously do not believe) the chances would be so slim that they would be insignificant statistically speaking. Lots of drugs that people routinely take and don't bat an eye lid at have the (slim) potential for catastrophic consequences. An example being I had to have an anti-coagulant injection after breaking my leg a few years ago, right before being administered the Dr. casually informed me that there is a very small chance it could lead to fatal internal haemorrhaging of the organs, including the brain and leading to a massive stroke and causing death very quickly, and advised me to ring an ambulance straight away if I have any strange symptoms such as a severe headache etc. I still took it of course - as I'm sure tens and tens of thousands of people do every day across the world. Bit of a tangent, and I don't wish to have any debate about fin with anyone as it's been done to death a million times, but you see my point. It's ultimately your choice, but you might live to regret it big time. All the best with your growth anyways!
  2. Hello everyone, just wanted to share with you my results with ASMED Clinic. Ok, so, this is my second hair transplant.First one was made in Romania at the biggest clinic and paid 5900 eur for 3000 grafts (average 2 eur/hair) for something that didn't look natural and with very low density and always had to keep hair short. Two years later I researched heavily all the forums and online groups for the best solution as I only had few donor capacity and could not afford a screw up again.I got the chance to see a few results in Romania with customers from ASMED and they were very good. Even then I was retticent because everyone uses their best results to promote temselves and I was thinking that my intervention will never look that good anyway.Due to this pandemic and opportunity to stay at home while I recover I said to myself that I should start doing something. At that point I wrote to ASMED to get some price indications and see how they aproach my issue. I sent an email with some pics and then I had to fill in a more extensive evaluation form that was reviewd by Dr. Koray.Between my first communication and response with offer and all information regarding the intervention it took around two weeks (was ok for me because that ment that the Dr is not doing paperwork and chatting online and he's actually busy doing surgeries so this was not a minus for me, rather than a plus). The offer had three options available, different packages (consultation to preparation, extraction implantation, etc) depending on who you chose to perform it. I was going to spend all my money for a great transplant so I wanted to go full house on Dr. Koray to perform everything, but Andreea my medical coordinator, convinced me that all the staff is highly skilled and I don't have to worry if other members of the staff will perform part of the surgery. Her care and way of sending that trustful vibe was awesome. Even though I said I will never afford to risk anything or to be put in a position where I could scew it up I still trusted her and hell, she was right :).So, I chose to have only incisions done by Dr. Koray (still I was pretty nervous because I saw some awful results of unskilled technicians).Coming back to the evaluation, Dr. Koray said that around 5000 grafts will do the trick. All good, I chose the package, did a calculaton and said ok to the middle package with partial Dr. Koray and ASMED Team to do the surgey. I will not disclose prices as this is cleary something subject to change and it would not be fair to the clinic. Just a small hint - I could have saved so much hair and money if I would have done the first transplant with ASMED.Once we established to work together I payed a small amount to book the surgery and dates (6-7 October - 2 day intervention), bought my plane ticket and sent dates to Andreea.Date of arrival: landed in Istanbul, driver was waiting for me, discussed a lot about footbal , got to the clinic, performed the COVID test and all blood tests needed + EKG.After this Andreea took me to my room (clinic is state of the art) and ate. Food was way better than what I ate in lots of restaurants (I ordered what I want to eat before I left Romania so wow, that was awesome).Ok, so I ate, and had the day to myself until 5 PM, when Dr. Koray was performing the consultation. I wondered a bit in Istanbul close to the clinic and had one beer (oops - actually not allowed but I said what the heck it's hot and one beer at the terace is not such a big deal :)).Consultation with Dr. KorayI would say that I was a bit scared as I saw his face when he saw my donor was very poor and felt really dissapointed when i heard "I am very sorry but your donor is not that potent to support a new hair transplant for 5000 grafts and to lower your hairline that much as you want so we have to be carefull and create density, this is the main goal. Hair is thick enough but donor is poor and could only harvest 4500 grafts.I said ok and left with reality knocking me down. After this I went to the KE BOT Hair analysis that boosted my chances up when I realised that I have a lot of grafts with even up to 5-6 hairs and good potential for density. Also took the before photos and all and back into my room expecting the day of surgery.Day of surgeryHint: expect severe cold as the environment is designed to help the grafts survive and keep the medium aseptic probably.I had a very nice surprise to see what tech they have in there - WOW - I could see number of hairs, grafts, projection on my head, donor area, occipital, parietal, where to extract from, where to place the hairs, everyhitng top notch. Even all the hairs that were implanted were counted real time.I don't remember the name of their anaesthetis but he was funny and very kind offering true comfort.Surgey went smooth, pain was quite manageable and cold senstion was solved with a heated blanket.Surgery day2: same thingEach morning the team washes the implanted an donor area and you have to do this until 10-11 days for the scabs to fall off. After the two days spent in the clinic, I flew back home and started to count the days to see my results. I was very panicked because if this transplant would fail... I had no other option and had to live a bald life. Within the first two weeks, hairs started to shed and even though I know this is the normal process, it was like a piece of me was dying with each hair falling off. After the two month period (ugly duckling phase) I started to see the new babies Initially I was not happy with the density and had to keep it short because not all sport were covered by hair but eventually after 4-5 months density started to fill in all the sport and I see new hairs still as I am in my 9th month since the transplant. Will add more photos of before and after. This is what i Had on my phone. Happy growing guys!
  3. I am 2 months post-op. How long until guys usually see new hair growth from the transplanted hair? Also my surgeon said I can get another transplant as soon as 6 months if I wanted to (people recommend 1 year just to see the full results first), is this true? How many FUT's can guys usually undergo (on average)? Like how can you tell if your skin doesn't have enough laxity. Is it also true that every subsequent FUT strip, the amount of grafts you harvest decreases? (like 1st transplant can be 2,500 grafts, but the 2nd strip will only give 2,000 grafts, and then 3rd would be 1,500)?
  4. Hey folks I agree that with an aggressive approach during the first HT might have been a bad idea. However the onus is on the surgeon to explain the patient about the expected outcome which in my case didnt happen. I also agree with some members here that I was repeatedly told that density will be achieved over time but it didnt happen. However, I wanted to be positive and went ahead with the 2nd touch up. Again, I completely agree that a free touch up may sound fantastic but it did cost me flight, my time, holidays from work, emotional stress and had to go through the recovery phase. As you all know that my journey on this forum has been nothing but 100% truth so here is what went through my mind after 12 months of 1st HT. Doctors said that they were also unsure why the density was not achieved after 12 months so I wanted to give them another chance. After the touch up, 6 months have now passed so lets give another 6 months. Still if the results are not achieved, then I will be convinced that there is someone else out there who would have done a better job. Until then lets not jump the gun and hopefully things will be different in Dec 2021. I didnt take finasteride during my 1st transplant but taking it regularly since the touchup. Only time will tell how the results pan out. No offence to Eugenix team as I just want to share my true thoughts. Regards
  5. True. I recently gave myself a “buzz cut” down to about 1-inch length on top and fade to 0 on sides and it looked thin and sparse the first several days after having it long for a year..., now a couple weeks later it’s looking good again now that it’s a bit longer.
  6. This is true also. BDK081522 I'm still waiting for your source bud.
  7. Hello everyone, I underwent a hair transplant from 8 to 10.03.2021 with Dr. Kaan in Ankara and am now 8 days post surgery. As a silent reader, I have been following the posts here in the forum for quite some time and have been able to gather many important insights for my own HT. In this context, I would like to share my experience report with you in order to possibly also serve as a help for others. True to the motto: Give it back to the community! Background - 26 years old - Hair loss for about 5-6 years - Medication: Minoxidil (stopped due to severe shedding and irritation), Finasteride since 2018 Why Dr. Kaan? - Expertise in donor management due to my young age - FUE including manual harvesting - Doctor takes care of all essential processes himself - Very good results in various forums (here, Alopezia, BelliCapelli) - Comprehensive consultation and analysis of my situation including previous history - Friendly and informative communication via contact person Arrival and hotel - PCR test (Corona) and complete blood count in Germany - Direct flight on 7.3.2021 via SunExpress from Düsseldorf to Ankara - Pick-up by the driver went smoothly - The hotel "Atakösk" recommended by the clinic is at most okay, but the location (maximum 200m to the clinic) is great Clinic The clinic is well equipped and very modern. It is especially nice that you are the only patient and therefore really relaxed. It is also nice that you have your "own" lounge. There are various drinks and small refreshments available for the breaks. Planning and surgery Every surgery day started at 8 am. On the first day, after a pleasant meeting with Dr. Kaan, we planned the operation. We discussed the pros and cons of various options and finally agreed on 3100-3200 grafts to fill the front and the midscalp with a density of about 50 per cm2, which decreases slightly towards the midscalp. Afterwards, the hair was shaved and the procedure began. The anaesthesia and the injections are not that bad and were easy for me to bear. The only unpleasant part was lying on my stomach while the grafts were being removed. As far as the timing is concerned, in my case about 500 grafts were taken out and then there was a short break. Then the grafts were inserted. After this procedure there was a lunch break. The food during the lunch break is good and tasty. This procedure was repeated for the next two days and was altogether more bearable than I had expected. I did not need painkillers on any of the days of the operation. Only lying around for a long time is a bit annoying, but since I often fell asleep during the operation, this was not a problem on the whole. It is also important to mention that you have the possibility to contact Dr. Kaan after each day of the operation in case of complications. Aftercare The bandage was removed, the donor was smeared with Bepanthen and saline solution was applied to the recipient. Afterwards, Dr Kaan examined me again and told me that everything looked very good. I was also given the post-operative instructions and given medication and lotion. Afterwards, I was able to ask Dr. Kaan open questions. Conclusion All in all, I felt very well looked after. I was particularly impressed by the doctor's friendly manner coupled with his expertise. The fact that only one patient is treated per day is also a great advantage in my opinion. I have the impression that Dr. Kaan sets the highest standards for himself and does everything for a good result for his patients. I am now hoping for a good result and looking forward to the coming months. I will try to update this post on a monthly basis and post transparent and honest pictures. If you have any questions, I will try to answer them as best as possible. Greetings Tug

  9. Hi Egy I just think the OP should grow his Hair a little and assess again after . I don’t think this is defending the clinic , I’m defending then OP as I know first hand how it feels. I had the forum members criticise my transplant and call it a failure too. I then concentrated on the imperfections rather than the improvements made. how you style your hair and present it is also key after a transplant , this is a matter of fact and true density can never be achieved. Let’s give OP some support on advise on how to better his current situation without having another surgery just yet .
  10. Hi that may be true and may not make any difference but I'm happy they are being proactive and working to find a solution.
  11. I have to say this is one of the best written out reviews. I can see that Dr. Bicer really cared about her patients. I would say she’s in the top 1% of all Turkish clinics. I don’t think many clinics operate 11 hours on any one patient. That is true patient care. I look forward to seeing your updates and progress 👏🏼
  12. I read an article that said that implanter pens tend to be more effective for Asian patients due to their naturally coarse straight hair. Does it still hold true that implanter pens work better with those specific hair characteristics? The reason I'm asking is because I was looking at some results from the top Spanish doctors and I was really impressed by the work they were putting out. It turns out that most of them if not all of them are using an implanter pen. Obviously, the better doctor will generally produce better results but it also does seem like certain doctors work better with certain hair characteristics (such as afro hair). If all other factors are equal, would an implanter pen give better results for patients like me with straight coarse hair? Does the implanter pen make a significant difference in graft survival rate in patients that are well suited for it? Seems like there are so many great Spanish docs right now all using the implanter pen and I have to wonder if part of it is the technique. So my question is does the implanter pen make a statistically significant difference when dealing with patients with coarse straight hair? Should I put any weight to the tool at all if even to serve as a tie breaker between clinics?
  13. This is true. But bear in mind that vaccines are not 100% effective, there are looming side effects like newly discovered heart inflammation not to mention emerging variants. Not saying not to get vaccinated but I want to ensure that youre not risking your life over hair. Better safe than sorry. A friend of mine had encountered covid a month after getting the 2nd shot and he lived to tell the dark tale of how he almost lost his life. Something to think about. Stay safe.
  14. Hi everyone, I think I’ve made my decision with regards to which surgeon to go ahead with for a procedure however wanted a little advice before taking the plunge. The 3 surgeons/clinics that I came down to were Hasson & Wong, Dr Freitas and Dr Bisanga. Out of the 3 I eliminated Hasson & Wong as it is about a 11 hour flight and thought it maybe wasn’t necessary to travel that far with the other two great surgeons being so close. Dr Bisanga is very open and honest which made me steer towards him, he has great results and is a big advocate for oral minoxidil which I wanted to give a try anyway. The only downsides are that he won’t give me an estimation online (which in all fairness, made me more confident in his opinion and professionalism) and that I haven’t seen many diffuse thinning cases carried out by him. (which are similar to my hair loss) Dr Freitas on the other hand has many diffuse thinning cases on this forum and on his website from people that are a similar age to myself (25 if you were wondering) and his results are simply stunning, in-fact some I honestly thought were genuinely too good to be true. So out of the two surgeons I’m kind of stuck, do I wait to see Dr Bisanga before making a decision (which could be months away due to Covid restrictions still) or get booked up with Dr Freitas? (Earliest appointments being July next year!) Also a little side note, thank you to Melvin and everyone on this forum - if it wasn’t for yourselves I probably would have just gone to Turkey and booked up with a hair mill. If you’re new to this forum, this is the place to find yourselves a good surgeon and ask for advice.
  15. He must be ... that 3rd photo seems too good to be true
  16. I personally think it is a very good result. You need to always keep in mind that HTs are merely an "illusion of density"; you just cannot achieve the same hair density you had in your puberty (at least, not with just one HT). True, there are hair mills results that look fantastic and thick, but you need to consider that not everyone has the same hair caliber, and also these clinics like to pack 4000+ grafts in the same transplanted area you had, thus achieving a denser-looking result. The downside of this dense-packing strategy is that you would start to deplete your donor capacity for future HTs ( which in most cases is necesary, since balding saddly never stops) . That said, I really like your result. Plus, you are just 8 months, in other words, you can still expect improvement and thickening 💪
  17. yes very true john..truly, world of difference when i see the mirror! no doubt about it!
  18. thanku so much @SLA. yes true. i am already satsified with my results. if this is going to be my final result, then i would say its great end point! just that i got greedy about th density 😁. regarding the crown, its too early to judge though i am already ok with it. i was completely ok with it being sparse. i just dont want to look completely bald in the crown..now thats accomplished, i am no more worried about bending my head around people! i know its just too early to ask but what do u think about having a mild touch in the hairline if it doesn't improve. whats ur opinion on it!?
  19. For a while I've been looking at results and clinics in turkey by doctors Erdogan or Aygin. I want your honest opinions on these doctors. Obviously theyre from Turkey and theres been some controversy around that country relating to hts. But from what I've seen their results look very good as well as their prices. Some questions. 1. Who would you rather go to? Erdogan and Aygin? Or Lorenzo, Couto and H&W? 2. Can Erdogan and Aygin fill thinning front scalp that still has hair but needs density? 3. Results from Aygin look too good to be true. Can he be trusted? 4. Do you recommend Erdogan and Aygin? Any issues?
  20. It is true that most surgeons practicing both techniques believe that you can extract more starting with FUT and later FUE. I am curious if we look at homogenous depletion of donor via FUE and then adding some SMP to donor if necessary would ultimately allow more grafts to be extracted than doing FUT followed by FUE. We have seen several examples of homogenous depletion of donor on this forum including @mustang. You can't homogenously deplete a scalp after FUT due to the linear scar. What gives me pause about FUT is should it not work out (or you don't like results), you are left with a linear scar that is hard or impossible to fully conceal. With FUE you are left with scarring (although less noticeable) that could be concealed easily with SMP. Thoughts?
  21. True - remember that he seemed to say that a two or three hundreds FUE grafts were enough to make a good FUT scar pretty undetectable such that you could wear hair very short again.............reminder to all that going to a clinic that does both well ensures your being given/getting the best solution tailored for you. I can only imagine the amount of people being sold FUE because thats all the clinic does.....but where a large FUT case would be far superior in the immediate and longer term
  22. I guess growth guarantee was not the appropriate term to use in this case, since I know a few clinics that advertise this, mainly hair mills. I guess what I should have said that if a repair procedure would be possible, and I believe that is what some clinics will offer if the transplant does not turn out to what me, as a patient and the doctor expected. The main issue I am having is getting a true estimate for my donor capacity. Before my second procedure I consulted with several doctors, such as Hasson and Wong, and was told a procedure of even 3500 grafts FUT+FUE would be pushing my donor to the limit. After another 4300 grafts, procedure my donor area still looks good, so I was just curious what would happen, if I maxed out my donor for the third and hopefully last procedure, if it ended up failing. I went with a world renowed surgeon for the first procedure and to this day, still have no idea why it failed, so I have to prepare for the worst, just in case.
  23. Also I had a look on these, JohnAC71 told me that Demirsoy was a good choice for budget. But I just wanted to know if more people had something to say about him. What about Dr Resul Yaman? Says he is about 1 EUR per graft if its true I dont know. https://www.best-hair-clinics.com/clinics/dr-resul-yaman-istanbul.html
