Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. I’ve seen some good results from Dr. Nusbaum and Dr. Shaver with the Artas. Would it be better if it were manual? I don’t know, but there are some good docs using it.
  2. Patient had a strip procedure done. Please view the before and after photos below. These photos show his 6 month results. Final results will be achieved at one year.Total follicular units: 22181's - 4292's - 10333's - 756
  3. Check out the hair doctors in Miami Dr. Nusbaum and Dr. Rose https://www.hairtransplantnetwork.com/physician/Florida/Bernard-Nusbaum/38 https://www.hairtransplantnetwork.com/physician/Coral-Gables/Paul-Rose/19
  4. Hello, I'm planning on doing a HT - most likely FUT for a couple of reasons (one being cost). Anyway, deciding between these Drs (I travel between NY and Miami often which is why I can do either) : Dr Feller (NY) Dr Bernstein (NY) Dr Nusbaum (FL) Please let me know your thoughts. If it helps at all - I included a couple of shots of my head. I don't know what you call it or how you would number me - lol. You can't really tell from the pic but I do have nice thick hair on the side and back of my head. Thanks for the help!! Been reading here for a while but this is my first post.
  5. Dr. Bernard Nusbaum is well-known in the city of Miami as an elite hair restoration surgeon. His expertise has been recognized worldwide as well, after being awarded the 2015 Golden Follicle by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS). Dr. Nusbaum has well over 10,000 hair surgeries under his belt, making him one of the most proficient and experienced transplant specialists in the world. In this video, Dr. Nusbaum explains the difference between two of the most common types of hair transplant surgery: The “strip” procedure, and newer follicular unit extraction (FUE) procedures. Below, readers are invited to learn more about each of these highly refined and effective approaches to hair loss treatment. Following the text, readers will find a video interview with Dr. Nusbaum, in which each procedure is explored with great detail. Strip Donor Hair Transplant The “strip” procedure is perhaps the most known out of all surgical hair restoration procedures. It gets its name from the strip of scalp that must be removed in order to harvest donor hair for the transplant. Removal of this strip also leaves the patient with a linear scar that might be seen when hair is buzzed short (e.g. with a #2 razor). For many patients, this is a deal breaker. However, as Dr. Nusbaum explains, not all donor scars are created equally. Patients who would like to take advantage of the strip donor procedure will be happy to know that there are ways to minimize the appearance of the linear scar that strip procedures notoriously leave behind. Of course, great care must be taken to select a surgeon who has the technique, expertise, and satisfied patients to validate his or her abilities. At the Hair Transplant Institute of Miami, Dr. Paul Rose provides an approach known as the trichophytic ledge closure to mask the signs of the donor area scar by artfully directing individual hairs to grow around and through it. After the linear strip is removed, surgeons carefully dissect it into groupings of 1-3 follicular units. These units are then implanted into the patient’s recipient area—that is, the area experiencing thinning, excessive shedding, or balding. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) A newer approach to hair restoration surgery is achieved through the use of follicular unit extraction (FUE). Surgeons who employ this technique use a small punch instrument, usually measuring just a millimeter or two across, to individually harvest clusters of follicular units. In this way, surgeons bypass the need to extract a linear strip of scalp. Thus, there is never a linear scar, even when the patient’s hair is cut short (e.g. shaved, or buzzed with a #2 razor). However, the punch instrument is known to leave light reddish dots at the site of each extraction. These dots might be visible when the hair is cut short, depending on how short the patient cuts it and how he or she styles it. Once extracted, the hair restoration process proceeds in a similar fashion as the strip donor procedure described above. The surgeon takes each donor unit and implants it within the recipient area. This might include the hairline, the sides of the scalp, or along the rear crown of the head where pattern baldness is usually most obvious. Watch the Video Interview on YouTube Visit the following link to . A Note on Restoration In both strip donor and FUE procedures, it is noteworthy to mention that the surgeon manually places donor hair to achieve a desired look and feel in the recipient area. This is a vital part of the procedure, and many experts believe placement of donor hair is what separates an average hair transplant from an extraordinary one. Like an artist, the surgeon must carefully use his expertise and materials (donor hair) to create the appearance of a natural head of hair. Undulation is among the most important characteristics to consider, specifically when restoring the frontal hairline. Donor hair must be inserted in a fashion that naturally flows inward and outward along the natural curve of the hairline. Another important factor to consider is “irregular irregularity,” which means that natural hairlines often have hairs dispersed randomly in front and behind the hairline. Without preserving irregular irregularity, hair transplants may look painfully obvious, resembling a straight line across the forehead that is anything but natural. 7. I'm pleased to present Dr. Bernie Nusbaum of Miami, Florida for potential membership in the Coalition of Independent Hair Restoration Physicians. Dr. Nusbaum has outstanding credentials and has been exclusively performing state of the art hair transplantation since 1985, with over 10,000 hair transplants performed. He has been recommended on the Hair Transplant Network for over four years (click here to view his profile/recommendation) and has consistently garned excellent patient reviews on this and other discussion forums. I have had the privelage of observing him and his staff perform ultra refined follicular unit grafting (see the photos and highlights on this forum). In my opinion Dr. Nusbaum, his staff and procedure are truly outstanding. He is also one of the most gracious, compassionate and humble men I've ever met, especially given his stature in the hair restoration profession. As a hair transplant patient himself, Dr. Nusbaum has a keen sensitivity for patients that permeates his entire clinic and his surgical results. Dr. Nusbaum under went hair transplant surgery in the early 1980's to treat his own hair loss. He prides himself in having a one on one relationship with all his patients and giving his home number to all his patients. Dr. Nusbaum has not only kept pace with improvements in hair transplant techniques but contributed his considerable skills and ideas in numerous international meetings and medical journals. In recent years Dr. Nusbaum and his staff have incorporated the use of very tiny custom cut blades that enable them to make tiny dense packed incisions that are as small as .7 mm. His highly experienced staff of ten medical techs are capable of producing thousands of extremely refined grafts that are trimmed to fit in these tiny incisions. Dr. Nusbaum carefully orientates all the graft incisions in a manner to assure that the transplanted hair will grow out in at the proper angles and directions to maximize naturalness. In my opinion, Dr. Nusbaum has all the "right stuff" to take his rightful place among the proven handful of truly elite and ethical physicians of the Coalition of Independent Hair Restoration Physicians. However, prior to any physician being granted membership in the Coalition they must also gain approval from the active members of this patient community as well from the current physician members of the Coalition. As part of this review process I requested that Dr. Nusbaum send me photos of at least ten cases, including immediate post op photos. The photos that he sent to me are now presented in four different photo albums on this forum: Immediate post operative photos demonstrating ultra refined and minimally invasive techniques Large mega sessions that demonstrate his clinic's capability to transplant a large number of hairs (over 7,000 hairs or aproximately 3,000 follicular unit grafts) successfully in a single session. Expert repair/updating of hair transplants previously performed by other clinics Other cases presenting temporal hairline restoration and treatment of traction alopecia To see more impressive patient photos visit Dr. Nusbaum's photo gallery on his website. Videos of him performing surgery are also available on his website at http://www.miamihair.com/videos.html Please feel free to post any comments or suggestions regarding the potential Coalition membership of Dr. Nusbaum by replying below. Thank you in advance for your input and opinions. Patrick Hennessey - Patient Advocate for the Coalition of Independent Hair Restoration Physicians

  23. Dr. Bernie Nusbaum is a real gem in every respect. He is one of the most gracious, compassionate and humble men I've ever met, especially given his stature in the hair restoration profession. As a hair transplant patient himself, Dr. Nusbaum has a keen sensitivity for patients that permeates his entire clinic and his surgical results. Dr. Nusbaum under went hair transplant surgery in the early 1980's to treat his own hair loss. As a trained dermatologist he then decided in the mid eighties to apply his talents to helping other hair loss sufferers restore their hair. Since that time Dr. Nusbaum has not only kept pace with improvements in hair transplant techniques but contributed his considerable skills and ideas in numerous international meetings and medical journals. More recently Dr. Nusbaum and his staff have incorporated the use of very tiny custom cut blades that enable them to make tiny dense packed incisions that are as small as .7 mm. His highly experienced staff is capable of producing thousands of extremely refined grafts that are trimmed to fit in these tiny incisions. Dr. Nusbaum carefully orientates all the graft incisions in a manner to assure that the transplanted hair will grow out in at the proper angles and directions to maximize naturalness. Follicular unit grafts that are carefully trimmed under microscopes are then placed into these tiny incisions. This ultra refined technique enables Dr. Nusbaum and his staff to dense pack large numbers of grafts in a given area when appropriate for a particular patient. This enables patients to achieve good cosmetic density in one surgical session, while the small incisions minimize the trauma and disruption to the scalp and enable rapid healing and regrowth. This outstanding combination of commitment to the patient, experience, talent and truly cutting edge surgical technique makes Dr. Nusbaum and his clinic, the Hair Transplant and Dermatology Institute of Miami outstanding not only in Miami but worldwide.
