Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. Hello everyone, Around seven years ago I had a 4,100 grafts FUT procedure with Dr. Rahal, in which he mostly worked on the front/mid scalp. Overall, I was very satisfied with the hairline he created, and the obtained results. However, during these years -most likely- I have lost the remaining native hair I had by that time, and hence overall density, so lately my hair had a more thin appearance. For that reason, after thinking about it, I tried to schedule a new appointment with Dr. Rahal. Due to COVID restrictions it wasn't easy, so I started to make a new Dr. research. I contacted Dr. Konior, Dr. Saphiro, and Dr. Gabel, among some others. After consideration, and based on the personal approach and confidence during this process, I scheduled the surgery with Dr. Gabel. It was carried out past Monday/Tuesday so, here, I want to share my recent experience with Dr. Gabel and his team. Many on this site have already said positive things in other posts about him and I don't want to repeat, however, now that I had my own personal experience, I can tell you all the positive things you can hear/read about him are true. It exceeded my expectations. I am not just saying that my experience with Dr. Rahal wasn't good (indeed, it was good), but the level of care and detail that I experienced with Dr. Gabel through all the procedure (and following days) was truly remarkable. The surgery was divided in two days: first day 2,435 grafts FUT lasted around 12 hours, and second day 1,066 grafts FUE lasted around 10 hours. Here is te final graft count: Day 1- FUT (2,435 grafts) to reinforce front-mid scalp and gain density 1-hair 444 (18.2%) 2-hair 1,296 (53.2%) 3-hair 539 (22.1%) 4-hair 156 (16.4%) Day 2- FUE (1,066 grafts) to gain density in the crown 1-hair 94 (8.8%) 2-hair 537 (50.4%) 3-hair 379 (35.6%) 4-hair 56 (5.3%) Special mention as well to his staff; from the desk to the surgery room. All perform their duties smoothly, always in synchronization, skillful, friendly, and nice, which makes everything easier. At the technical level, Dr. Gabel was very meticulous in every aspect of the surgery, he has the confidence that puts a patient right at ease, and I felt very comfortable through out. Dr. Gabel performed all the extractions and created all the slits both days. He and his technician placed the grafts both days as well. After all was complete, Dr Gabel did a final walkthrough, moving things around, perfecting the work, that was followed during next 3 days I stayed in Oregon. I did not wrote a review from my previous HT but this time had to do it. If you are thinking about getting a hair transplant, my opinion is: talk to different doctors, and take advantage of the valuable information you can get from the internet. If finally decided to move on with Dr. Gabel, I am pretty sure you won't regret. I'm on my 4th day of post op: 5 first pics are pre op, 4 last pics post op. I will try to keep you guys updated. Best I thought I
  2. Thanks for tagging me. I think Hasson and Konior are both excellent doctors that have different strong suits. Konior did mention that he believes H&W are probably one of the best for megasession procedures. That’s their forte. In my opinion, Konior is great for detail work and repairs. For example, hairlines, temple points, etc. He has done large strips before, but if you’re looking to get a huge number of grafts in one sitting, it might be worth it to wait it out. Here’s the link to my interview with him and Dr. Nadimi https://www.instagram.com/tv/CItfBT8j7KO/?igshid=ba3u2wyknoj9
  3. Has anyone gotten FUT and then opted for FUE to plant into the scar and it looks good/can cut much shorter? Do any cases come to mind? I know Dr. Konior posted a result on someone recently.
  4. If you're happy with FUT these are arguably the best two clinics at it, Hasson in particular for larger megasessions. At the end of the day if you've come down to these two clinics I'd assume you already have a good sense for decision making, you really just have to look at their results yourself and decide who you think produces the best results to your eye consistently and in terms of aesthetics. On top of that the price, I'd also consider budgeting for a potential touch-up, not that you will absolutely have to but its worth considering in advance. Personally I do think Hasson produces more aesthetic hairlines, albeit at higher densities typically than Konior might. Konior however potentially marginally more consistent and better coverage per graft number. My conclusion would basically be that if the 2k deposit for Konior is a meaningful amount of money for you I'd simply go with Hasson, on FUT prices one of the best valued surgeons in the world. I'm not an American, but I do think just on the numbers that an end is *absolutely* in sight in regards to the border situation. That might mean 3-6months, but it it sounds like you've already endured the brunt of the wait regardless. For the period to extend another six months especially for those that have already been vaccinated it would mean a gargantuan failure of governance on behalf of both countries.
  5. I was supposed to have a procedure at H&W but it didnt happen because of the coronavirus. I want to have it as soon as possible because I wont be able to have one until next year (work obligations). So now im thinking of booking a procedure with Shapiro or Konior. The "downside" of Konior for me is that I cant see any review on him except this forum, so I wonder why? And the "downside" of Shapiro is that I cant find any recent results of FUE from him and I dont know much about him (my own dermatologist said he's one of best in the world). I would like to hear your opinions, thank you!
  6. Previous thread on first procedure with Dr. K with sole goal to rebuild the frontal zone: Second procedure on January 23, 2019, approx 1200 grafts: -400 in the front to lower hairline and address left temporal recession -200 feathered behind and through mid scalp -600 on crown which were multiple hair grafts. Doc spent a lot of time this time around laying out the days plan, drew a lot of lines and took a lot of photos since we were 'refining' and not 'rebuilding' the front - eventually came up with the idea of a subtle widows peak to address my desire to lower the hairline + address left temporal recession with minimal graft usage. Needless to say, I was thrilled with the plan, it looks absolutely fantastic in the mirror, and now my fingers are crossed for good health and growth moving forward. Fully expect there will be a 3rd procedure down the road given my extensive crown loss (see prior thread), although everyone at the clinic seemed more optimistic and to said give it time. I am postop day 5 here are some pics- as expected the work is clean, negligible discomfort if any, minimal redness and i have been out and about doing stuff- pretty much nobody would really be able to tell at a quick glance that I just had a surgical procedure, except for the fading marker lines on my head!
  7. Hello everyone, I want to thank the organizers for the information provided on this site ! After 27 years of hair-loss, it has helped me with my decision. My other reason for posting is to provide information to others as I had gotten myself. Special thanks to Mark (This site member - Skeeter) for sharing his personal story. Here are a several people & sources that helped me choose Dr Gabel for my procedure: 1) Dr Konior, Chicago Hair Institue - Dr Konior introduced me to Dr Gabel 2) Mark (Skeeter) - Blog: "Fue with Dr Gabel" 3) Dan, His experience with Dr Gabel: https://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=171239891&page=1 4) Chris, His experience with Dr Gabel: http://www.hairlossfromsteroids.com/ About my experience with Dr Gabel: Many on this site have already said positive things in other posts & I don't want to repeat, however, now that I had my personal experience, I can tell you he is by far the best HT doctor there is. He has the confidence that puts a patient right at ease, he is passionate, totally enjoys what he does, & his results speak for them selves.. I had several consultations with Dr Gabel, one online & the other in person. For the one in person, Dr Gabel was nice enough to came in to the office on a Saturday to see me. On the day of the surgery, I came in & did not know what to expect. However, what I found was that I did not have to, Dr Gabel & his crew already had everything covered.. The surgery lasted 12 hours. Dr Gabel was very meticulous in every aspect of the surgery. He is an artist & I felt very comfortable through out. Number of Total Grafts: 2010 1-Hair = 177 2-Hair = 773 3-Hair = 829 4-Hair = 231 About my experience with Dr Gabel's team: His staff are top notch & all perform their duties as a finely tuned machine, always in sync, extremely skillful, friendly, & nice. From the lady greeting me in the front, to all the assistants that help with pre & post surgery. If you are thinking about getting a HT, Dr Gabel is the real deal. I'm on my 1st day of post op, currently sitting at the hotel, healing, resting & figured I post my experience. I will be providing pictures in a couple of weeks. Thank you kelmf01 Before: One day post op: Status Update 11-22/2018 Day 8 Post OP, I had a bit of an issue with scabs, I misread the DAY 7/8 care instructions. (Was not soaking/washing properly). Dr Gabel & Eileen came in Thanksgiving day to see me & fix me up !!!!!
  8. Melvin and Pra - The video, and your points, are well taken. I will keep all of this in mind. Konior is my doctor on the 7th so I am confident he will know exactly how to play my situation. Thank you both!
  9. Hey guys, I wanted to share my journey as it was this site that gave me a lot of great insight into picking out Dr. Konior along with seeing results and answering all of my questions. This procedure was done in early October and I've posted my Pre op photo, immediate Post op and also one month update. I'm more than happy to answer questions and hopefully I can be a resource to those who are thinking about having the surgery. Dr. Konior and team are extremely transparent and diligent from start to finish. Don't let the waiting list scare you off, it's absolutely worth the wait. Here's the breakdown of grafts 1 -214 2-1066 3-744
  10. Agree with @mustang. Fibers or hats at this point will do no harm. Dr. Konior's post op literature actually suggests using Toppik (or any fiber enhancer) should be avoided until 4-7 days post-op. That's the most liberal guidelines I have seen but obviously if you've seen his results, his patients do pretty well. You're going to be shedding grafts for the next couple weeks. The only thing that could do harm at this point is a severe sunburn. So, wear a hat, use sunscreen, or better yet avoid the sun altogether, lol.
  11. @SnowboardHey! Thanks for the recommendation of Dr Konior. After your mention I have been researching about him and noticing lots of positive feedback. Did you finally get your procedure done with Dr Konior? Hello Everyone, In addition, I keep hearing about Hasson & Wong on this forum. Price is not a concern for me as I want the best result possible (its an investment for myself) but location wise I would prefer US & Canada due to international travel restrictions. I have gotten the Pfizer vaccine too. Based on price not being an issue, what would be the top 5 doc list for FUT overall (minimal scarring, best density results) according to you?
  12. This 27 year old female patient presented with a request to lower her hairline. She previously underwent a 500 graft FUE procedure, but that procedure was described as a failure in achieving her stated goal. A strip harvest was recommended because of the large graft number needed for her restoration and because she had no intention of shaving her head in the future. She underwent a 3024 graft hairline lowering procedure. Presented here is her eighteen month postop result. Included are immediate postop graft placement photos. 13. This 28 year old requested frontal hairline restoration. A session consisting of 2884 grafts was performed using a “stick-and-place” insertion technique and dense-pack placement. Presented are 18-month postop photos, immediate graft placement photos and a 10-day postop photo.
  14. Hi Everyone - I've been lurking this super helpful forum of ours for the past 1+ years and I thought it's about time I start contributing back. Background After extensive lurking I reached the conclusion that Dr. Konior had the most respect and was regularly being praised as the top doctor in this field so I decided to go with him. I had a few email exchanges with Dr. Konior and after looking at my pictures and hair loss he recommended I needed around 3,000 grafts in the frontal region but if I wanted a more conservative approach I should get 2,000. I liked Dr. Konior's email response time and he answered my questions really well so I went ahead and booked my appointment with his office in June of 2017 as he's booked out a year in advance. I think now it's more like 1.5 years. Pre-Op Pictures All pictures in the maroon shirt are a month before the surgery. Day of Procedure I flew into Chicago with my brother the day before the procedure and we were at Dr. K's office at 6:30AM the day after. I do believe it's super helpful to have someone that can help you during the first few days. All these people that say that it doesn't hurt, it's not a big deal, and you can be back to work within a few days are full of it. The reality from my standpoint is that yes, the procedure itself doesn't really hurt since you're drugged and numbed up but you know and can feel you had something serious done right after. So expect a certain level of pain and give yourselves a week or two for the initial recovery. Anyhow, once I got to Dr. K's office I started getting a bit of cold feet because while I was waiting I was flipping through his published book and the pictures can be quite scary. And all those questions whether this is worth it started going through my mind. And when Dr. Konior came in I started asking him some basic questions again and I don't think he really liked that lol. In his mind all of that should've already been answered in our emails and today was not a consultation it was the day of the procedure, which I agree with him on. So after a little bit of light humor (he has a dry sense of humor which I really enjoy) and examples from Dr. K I was a bit more at ease and I said let's do this thing. After his main tech trimmed the front portion of my head and showed me my scalp in a mirror I was in complete shock. I had no idea how bald I truly was. Dr. K actually did say he was surprised how much volume I was getting with my hair. So this also made me feel better that I was making the right decision. After this, Dr. K asked me where I would want my hairline and I sort of showed him and he said that it would be way too low and require too many grafts. He then drew a hairline which he said wasn't too aggressive and wasn't too conservative either. So I said you're the expert, I'm willing to do whatever you want. So I agreed to the hairline and then he spent around 15 mins or so perfecting the hairline and taking pictures. Once that was done, I was given a valium and taken to the OR. By the time they started numbing my head I think I had already fallen asleep. I would wake up a few times for bathroom breaks and a granola bar but other than that I believe Dr. K and his tech knocked the procedure out. I do believe Dr. K does all the placement and hard work. I had asked him this before the procedure and he said he does all the placements and I have no reason to doubt that as every time I woke up I could hear him behind me. Post Op Dr. K placed 2,177 total grafts. He charged me the initially quoted price for 2,000 grafts so I appreciated that about him. Graft numbers: 1's - 675 ; 2's - 1364; 3's - 138 = 2177 I'm gonna quit rambling and start posting some pictures. Let me know if you have any specific questions.
  15. This 50 year old patient requested hair restoration. A total of 4114 grafts were performed over two sessions using FUE harvesting. 16. Looks very nice. Congrats! Can we see a close view of the temple points? Was always impressed by Konior's work in that department.
  17. Because of this thread I will be booking a consultation with Dr Konior this fall. I'm in no rush and will wait the 1+ year waitlist because of results like these. Truly amazing!
  18. Great stuff. I am looking to do ~2000 grafts. My previous HT is a little messed up in the corners, so I guess I fall into the 'repair' category. Do you any other recommendations for surgeons whose strengths fall under 'detail' and 'repair' category. I am ok if they are not (yet) in the coalition if they have great praise on here (like Dr Nadimi ). After looking at this post, and doing some more research, I would say Konior is likely my top choice. But It looks like I may not be able to get in due to his wait list. His associate Dr Nadimi seems more available, though she doesn't seem to be a coalition member. From the posts here it really looks like she has a great rep. I saw in one of the testimonial that during one procedure, she had to step out and take care of a different patient. It seems that a lot of up-and-coming HTSs try to pack a lot of work in to make a name for themselves. But younger people tend to have more energy so not necessarily a bad thing. She might be a future coalition member, and so if there is a discount compared to Konior it may be great value HT, though it seems that if you study under a coalition member, that's not necessarily guaranteed, ie Rasman/Pak. In case the others have very long wait times like Konior, I decided to expand my list. From my research, I added: Bernardino Arocha: His assistant posts results here regularly. I don't hear these epic praises for him like with the others. But seems like a solid choice. Timothy Carman: He seems to be a high demand area for HTs; San Diego. So I'm not sure where there is so little talk about him. He is close to where I am, so I would love to consider him. Haber, M.D.: Another coalition member. Like Timothy, not much buzz on here about him.
  19. @MagnificentAl The work looks phenomenal. I bet you are more than pleased. Quick question: I have a surgery scheduled with Dr. Konior next month. Do you have any idea the area by which your hair was transplanted? The cm2? I am only asking as I am trying to gauge the density per cm2 for your result. If I have anywhere near your density I will be elated. (My hair texture is similar to yours albeit let coarse.)
  20. Dr Konior or Dr Bloxham/Feller? I like both doctors' results but I find Bloxham/Feller more honest with their results representation (videos and wet comb throughs) also they are half the price of Konior. Any other great FUT clinics out there to consider? Hattingen? Bisanga? I'm looking for a dense pack hairline rebuild, with possibly another procedure in the future to tweak and add density. I am very impressed by Bloxham/Feller scars while I have not seen many scar photos from Konior. Konior has some incredible results but only in photo and from few years ago. It's a difficult choice to make
  21. Hey there, Make sure you read and continue to follow Dr. Konior's post-op instructions for showering. That is your best resource for exactly what you should be doing. If you have questions, I'd recommend e-mailing Dr. Konior directly. There is often conflicting evidence on this forum. For example, a moderator mentioned that I should use a Vitamin E oil for my incision line, but Dr. Konior explicitly told me to not use vitamin E oil as some research suggests that it can actually slow healing. Everyone has great intentions, but it's always best to get your information directly from the source (i.e., a real doctor). At the 2-week point after the procedure, I had massive relief and started to finally have much less pain and better sleep. For some it takes longer, for others (especially patients undergoing FUE like yourself) it may be less than that. By day 7, I was still in pain and could barely sleep. Totally normal! Now, over 1 month since the procedure, I am pain free and already restarted all physical activity with no problems. Again, expect it to take a few weeks post-op to have some relief. Hope that helps!
  22. is it 3800 grafts total youve transplanted? your a very high NW (I think 6) with a lot more terrain to cover so its hard to give you any concrete advice. Was there a reason why Bhatti used chest and beard hair in your operation? Did he say you had a bad donor and thats why he only used 2800 grafts scalp? For peace of mind id consider contacting some clinics - Eugenix, H&W, Hattigen, Bisanga, Feriduni Konior - just to know what they think. Obviously an in person consultation is better given your current situation. I dont believe CVG is an issue as theres a Konior patient that has it and it didnt affect their results, but it would definitely be worth asking the clinics Sorry I couldnt be more help
  23. This 33 year old patient requested a high density restoration for his receding frontal hairline. He underwent a dense-pack hairline restoration using 2926 grafts.Presented here are 9 month postoperative photos.Included are immediate postop graft placement photos and views with the hair being parted to demonstrate his graft zone density compared to the preexisting density in the midscalp region.
