Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. Having attended many of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) annual meetings over the years, I've long known that Dr. Robert Haber is highly respected by his physician colleagues. In 1995 he was recognized for his innovative techniques with an "Award of Excellence" by the ISHRS. In 2001 he was awarded the Archimedes Prize by the Italian Society of Hair Restoration and the Michelangelo Award in 2002. He also served as the President of the ISHRS from 2002 to 2003. But seeing him and his staff in action confirmed that he "walks the talk" in all aspects of his hair restoration surgery from A to Z. The issue of how hair bearing tissue is removed from the donor area has been a particularly hot topic on the Internet the past few years. Patients have been concerned about minimizing scarring in the donor area, while maximizing the amount of hair follicles that are successfully transplanted. Dr. Haber is very much at the cutting edge of addressing these issues so that patient's get the optimal amount grafts from a given amount of limited donor tissue, while minimizing the visibility of any donor scar. In fact, his new device, the "donor spreader", which virtually eliminates any transection (severing) of hair follicles in the donor area during donor removal, was a big sensation when it was introduced at the annual ISHRS meeting in Australia in August of 2005. Dr. Haber's new "Donor Spreader" ??“ making Donor Harvesting Transection Free. The donor spreader enables a surgeon to remove a single donor strip from the patient's donor area without transecting the follicles along the edges of the donor strip. This single strip of hair bearing donor tissue is then carefully "slivered" (trimmed) under microscopes into smaller sections, which are then trimmed into 1, 2, 3 and 4 hair follicular unit grafts. While many leading hair transplant surgeons have the skill to cut along the edge of the donor strip and carefully remove a single donor strip with minimal transection of the follicles along the single blade incision, the donor spreader makes this process easier and more assured. This single bladed donor removal and dissection process, when skillfully performed, makes the harvesting and trimming of donor tissue into follicular unit grafts virtually transection free. Thus a patient can know with confidence that every follicle that is harvested from their limited supply of bald resistant hair follicles in the donor area is going to be carefully preserved and transplanted. Such careful attention to maximizing a patient's limited bald resistant donor tissue is the hallmark of physicians who really care about the patient's long term well being. Such care is often not taken by clinic's who use "multibladed" knifes to quickly remove and trim the donor area in one step without carefully avoiding transecting and damaging the precious donor follicles. Such multibladed knifes and other patient unfriendly means of donor removal, while expedient for the clinic, are silent killers of hundreds of thousands of precious bald resistant hair follicles each year. In my opinion, Dr. Haber's new donor spreader is an outstanding and innovative tool that will save hundreds of thousands of precious follicles in thousands of patients as leading physicians incorporate it into their practices. I really commend him for making the donor harvesting process virtually transection free! Making the Donor Scar Virtually Invisible Dr. Haber also uses a relatively new technique for closing the donor area called "Trichophytic" closure, which can often make the donor scar virtually undetectable to the naked eye. This technique, also referred to as the "ledge" technique, was also detailed on this forum by Dr. Paul Rose who has championed this technique along with Dr. Mario Marzola of Australia. The "Trichophytic" closure enables the top and bottom lips of the open donor area to be joined together with a slight overlap so that the hair follicles in the lower lip grow up and out through the upper lip thus making the donor scar virtually invisible to the naked eye. To enable the upper and lower lips of the donor area to overlap in a smooth and level manner the top and bottom lips are trimmed and beveled so that they join together flush. Such a high level of care in the harvesting and closing of the donor area is producing optimal hair yield for his patients, while minimizing visible donor scarring so that it will not be an issue for a patient. Given his interest in minimizing the chance of cosmetically significant donor scarring, Dr. Haber likes to limit his typical surgical session to under 2,500 grafts in order to avoid over taxing the donor area. Microscopically Prepared Follicular Unit Grafts and Minimally Invasive Incisions Dr. Haber's technicians take great care to preserve the naturally occurring follicular units, while trimming them into 1, 2, 3 and 4 hair grafts. These grafts are then placed into very tiny graft incisions that are carefully oriented and angled by Dr. Haber. Like other leading hair transplant surgeons, Dr. Haber is sensitive to the varying angles and directions in which hair grows depending on where it is located. By following the natural direction and angulations of hairs in a given area, Dr. Haber is able to recreate a natural flow and direction for the new hair. Patient Focused Care Produces Optimal Results Dr. Haber and his staff also typically focus on one patient for the day. Such individual attention enables them to take the time and care needed at each step of the process to give the patient optimal yield and growth, rapid healing and very natural results. Such quality work, although not widely known or recognized online, has earned Dr. Haber and his clinic a strong local reputation in Ohio. In my opinion, Dr. Haber and his staff are real gems in the rough who quietly and consistently produce excellent state of the art results at very fair prices.
  2. If it makes a differences, I am looking to do 1600-2000 grafts, FUT. I say 1600-2000 because that's what the several HT surgeons I have consulted with gave, I understand that these surgeons will give different estimates. Btw, glad this site exists, I had consulted around in my local area, and wasn't quite satisfied with my local options. I had a 1500 grafts surgery about a decade ago, and looking fill in areas that have lost density + my hairline needs to be fixed a little from my last transplant. I am slightly leaning towards coverage over density, though from what I can tell, all of them have a pretty good understanding of this balance. From what I've been reading, Gabel is a little newer though by now is well established/experienced. Other than that, as far as I could find, other differences I could find don't seem to matter too much too but: Konior seems to do most of the work himself as opposed to techs. Hassan or Wong seem to be more reliant on techs, though their techs are very experienced (~10 years). Hassan seems to do more hair transplants than Wong due to more reviews being produced by him. These don't seem to tip the needle for me. I'm thinking hair transplants take several hours. Techs aide in preserving the surgeons much needed focus for optimal results, especially for tasks that are repeated a few thousand times. If a surgeon needs more rest to recharge and put more focus into fewer patients, they should do it. One of the questions I have is, why is Ron Shapiro so touted here, but not his associate Paul Shapiro or David Josephitis? Paul Shapiro doesn't even seem to be on the coalition. Anyways, it seems that I can't go wrong, but I have to pick one. Good dilemma to have, thanks to this website. Edit: I may have to expand my list, due to border crossing issues, wait times, etc. Any recommendations? Pref those who are great at detail, hairlines, repair, though again, that seems to be most of them. Great stuff. I am looking to do ~2000 grafts. My previous HT is a little messed up in the corners, so I guess I fall into the 'repair' category. Do you any other recommendations for surgeons whose strengths fall under 'detail' and 'repair' category. I am ok if they are not (yet) in the coalition if they have great praise on here (like Dr Nadimi ). After looking at this post, and doing some more research, I would say Konior is likely my top choice. But It looks like I may not be able to get in due to his wait list. His associate Dr Nadimi seems more available, though she doesn't seem to be a coalition member. From the posts here it really looks like she has a great rep. I saw in one of the testimonial that during one procedure, she had to step out and take care of a different patient. It seems that a lot of up-and-coming HTSs try to pack a lot of work in to make a name for themselves. But younger people tend to have more energy so not necessarily a bad thing. She might be a future coalition member, and so if there is a discount compared to Konior it may be great value HT, though it seems that if you study under a coalition member, that's not necessarily guaranteed, ie Rasman/Pak. In case the others have very long wait times like Konior, I decided to expand my list. From my research, I added: Bernardino Arocha: His assistant posts results here regularly. I don't hear these epic praises for him like with the others. But seems like a solid choice. Timothy Carman: He seems to be a high demand area for HTs; San Diego. So I'm not sure where there is so little talk about him. He is close to where I am, so I would love to consider him. Haber, M.D.: Another coalition member. Like Timothy, not much buzz on here about him.
  3. Thanks for the replys.. Dr. Haber in Ohio did my procedure and I was very amazed and happy for years.. I still take the recommended 1mg dosage of Propecia but it seems Mr. Nature is more powerful

  5. My 1st FUT was on April 2014 with Dr Konior, so almost 7 years since then. Here's where my 1st FUT journey is documented at Dr Konior had done a good job with my 1st FUT that I never really had any concerns going again for another FUT if need vs FUE. I've also heard that going FUT before FUE can maximize the grafts that can be taken out, so I started looking for my options. No prizes for guessing who my 1st choice was ( sorry, it wasn't Dr Ron as mentioned in my title ) but Dr Konior. I reached out to him and found out that his prices have skyrocketed. Almost 2.5x than before. And a much longer waiting list. Time to be both happy and sad. Sad because his current price was out of my budget and happy since I knew I made the right choice the first time since he has become so much in demand. I then tried contacting those around me since I did not want to take the flight during this Covid . I am in the midwest so Dr Konior, Dr Panine, Dr Nadimi, Dr Wolf, Dr Haber were all within short drivable distance. I had virtual consultations with Dr Nadimi and Dr Wolf. As I tried to look further, I saw that both Dr Cooley and Dr Ron were almost the exact distance from where I live. I talked to Matt from Dr Ron's clinic and Lollie from Dr Cooley's clinic. What I understood after all the talk was that none of them suggested me doing my crown since I am still in my late 30's without any medication. And I had a very large area to cover ( as you can see in my pics). I was disappointed since I thought I could cover it all up. H&Wong gave the most estimated grafts at 3500. A few others at 3000 but the rest of them wanted to be conservative from 2000-2500 grafts to save a few for the future. Dr Cooley's rep said 3000 at the max with lighter crown coverage and Ron's rep said 2000 and can push it to 2500 but not the whole crown. My hairline also had somewhat thinned out at places and I liked Dr Shapiro's hairline. And so I choose him knowing that he's one among the best that's out there, and hairline being one of the deciding factor . Attaching a few pics of how my hair look just before the 2nd transplant. I'll update soon on the surgery details which I had about a week ago.

  9. Hello everyone, I wanted to share my story of my recent hair transplant (FUT) done by Dr Robert Haber in Beachwood, OH that I had done on September 14th, 2016. 2,770 grafts were taken and what you see in my pic is the before/after (paid for 2800 so pretty close). I'm just over 5 weeks post-op now and wanted to share my story so far. The picture you see is the day before and the day after the surgery. I noticed some hair loss in my mid twenties (i'm 32 now), and it had bothered me for quite some time especially photos but I never thought I'd end up getting surgery to fix the issue. Well I obviously I did, and over the course of the past year, I did research and felt that I would be in good hands with a reputable doctor, like Dr Haber, but I couldn't really find much information on him as far as reviews or individuals thoughts, and living in Pittsburgh, he felt like the best option. I went in for my consultation and had the chance to meet him, and his consultant, and they answered all my questions. Felt very comfortable, gave it some thought for about a week, and booked the surgery about a month and a half out. I arrived 7:30am where they took pictures of my head from a variety of angles, and then proceeded into the surgery room where my new hairline would be identified. His staff was really friendly, provided music/netflix while i sat comfortably. I finished up just shy of 6:00pm and I ended up having a family member drive me home that day (I could have drove home by myself). I purchased the ATP solution he offered (did not sell it like an add-on) rather than just the saline solution that would be provided. I sprayed that on my head every 30 minutes until the bottle ran out which was on about the 4th or 5th day. From my understanding, the ATP helps with the healing more. I had some serious swelling in my forehead on the 3rd and 4th days and I think that was because I didn't do my best to sleep at a 45 degree angle. I had to return to work at day 5 as I'm in sales and people definitely noticed but I don't really care about telling people. The only thing I'm concerned about now is the people I told, I want to show my investment off and the anxiety that goes with wanting great results. I'm heavily into working out and was advised for 10 days to avoid exercise but I decided to wait 2 weeks (it killed me but I did it). For the first 2 weeks as well, I used baby shampoo on my head and would poor water over my head from a cup. My biggest concern that I felt like I goofed up, was at about day 7 or 8, I would very lightly massage the top of my head dry with my fingerpads and a lot of the crusting would just fall off, and I would lightly comb out. No bleeding, but in the paperwork it was advised to do that in the shower. Hope I didn't screw anything up. At about 3-4 weeks, most of the hairs had fallen out (would notice most of them when using rogaine which i started back up on day 5 and I also take proscar, quarter tablet daily) but I started to get some painful bumps (possibly folliculitis or pimples) and he wanted me to come back in to get checked up. Dr Haber noticed that a lot of the recipient hairs had not fallen off on their own, so he had a nurse come in and remove some of the hairs, and injected the pimples with a steriod, and I am now applying Clindamycin Phosphate lotion to the affected areas twice daily. My anxiety for whatever reason just gets the best of me on this and wish I could calm down a little as I'm anxious to see how this will turn out. Anyways, let me know your thoughts if you have the chance or if you have any questions. I'll do my best to update this as I go along. Hope this helps
  10. Hello Guys, I just heard of Dr. Haber in Davie, Florida near Fort Lauderdale. They are offering Hair Transplants for only $1.45/graft. Too good to be true. If anybody had a procedure with him please share your experience which will help me In deciding to go for him. Thanks

  18. Well guys, I am so close to putting a down payment down on the new me. However, I am torn. I am in the middle of two great doctor's and have consulted with both to date. I, however do not know who to choose. Both doctors produce excellent results. Haber offers ATP whereas Konior offers solid results. I have yet to find an online review where Konior's results were less than satisfying. In everyone's research and experience who would you choose if you were in my shoes?:confused::confused:
