Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. Hi All, This forum really helped in educating me, I’d like to add to the information available for anyone else who’s researching a hair transplant and to also have an archive of the journey for myself. Me 36 Curly hair 1mg of Finasteride a day for the past 18 months Nizoral shampoo once a week History Lost my temples when I was about 20, then no further loss or thinning until early 30’s where temples receded further and middle of the hairline also started to disappear. Shaved my hair early 2019 and regretted it. As I grew my hair back out, I’d get the same haircut I always did, short back and sides and leave the top long to cover the front, it looked okay as my hair is curly but it was getting harder to handle and one gust of wind it was game over. that’s when I decided to take action. Research I didn’t do much to start with, learnt what all the acronyms mean and what was involved. Found a positive review on a different forum and then booked a consultation for FUE with Hairpalace based in Hungary late 2019. They suggested 6000 hairs and I booked everything for June 2020… We all know what happened in March and as a result my flight was cancelled, along with the transplant. This was the point I really started to research more. I decided I wanted as natural a result as possible, I didn’t want to lower my hairline too much and I didn’t want a dramatic change in appearance. From reading through the forum over a long period of time I decided to consult with Farjo in Manchester, it was through Zoom and I’d spent a really good 30 minutes taking with Dr Farjo about options and his opinion, he was really informative and there was no selling involved. I know distance shouldn’t be a factor in selecting a Surgeon but the results, reputation combined with the fact the clinic was only an hour away from me made me go for it. Good clinics in the UK are expensive, there’s no getting around that and I did have a budget. Dr Farjo’s was over mine but Dr Kay who also works at the clinic came in within my budget, I’d seen some of her results on here and I booked up with her for June. Procedure The day before I received a phone call from the clinic to say Dr Kay had to cancel due to illness. Disaster, I had planned everything from time off, hotel, mental preparation. I was gutted. But Dr Farjo was going to step in and perform the procedure himself instead, great result. I arrive on the day at 7:30am, take a Covid test and chat to Dr Farjo and take photos. He explained it would take place in either 2 or 3 sessions of extracting and placing, depending on how things went, any complications etc. If it was 2 sessions it would be finished that day, if 3 then I would have to come back the next morning. I knew this before so had another night booked in a hotel just in case. Then it was on to hairline design, I had actually planned in my head for a more conservative design, Dr Farjo said he could make adjustments but I decided to go for it, haven’t had temple coverage since I was 20 and why not fill them in. With the hairline designed he asked how I wanted to keep the rest of hair, they would have to shave the sides and the area within the hairline design but could keep the rest. This was my plan before I got there but I decided to just go for it and shave it off. Easier to clean afterwards and would make the procedure easier also. Donor area was also marked out and then upstairs to where the magic happens. You get your own separate private room for the day and when you get in there you change into scrubs and take some anti inflammatory tablets and Valium. Off to the theatre room and head was shaved, sit down and facing forward and anaesthetic injections were put into the back of the head by Dr Farjo, he used a vibrating device, it’s not super painful and I think with all the nerves building up to this point makes it slightly worse, anticipation. Extractions You then go face down on a massage type chair and the extractions were carried out by Dr Farjo, after an hour or so Dr Nilofer Farjo came and took over. I was offered breaks but declined as I decided to try and go for as long as I could, I felt the less time the hairs were out of my head the better. Placement Extractions were finished and I had a quick toilet break, snack bar and juice and was now sat facing forwards. Dr Bessam Farjo came back in and injected anaesthetic into the front of my scalp and started to make the incisions, it was this point I think where I realised I got a great deal, a Dr out of my price range doing what I think is the most crucial part. Once this was done the super tech team sprung into action, I selected something to watch, I picked the office (top tip, don’t pick something that will make you laugh) There was 2 senior techs placing follicles into my head and each one had a team of 2 techs either side of me preparing the required amount of hairs for each placement. Things feel a bit less tense at this stage, I was very relaxed (Valium ) and it was great chatting to them. Dr Nilofer Farjo was supervising at several points. First session done and a quick update from Dr Nilofer Farjo, the extractions went really well and I even had some follicles with 5 hairs in, my procedure would be done by the end of the day. This was great news as I didn’t want to stay in a hotel that night or even walk to it. Second session Basically the same but this time lying on your side and Dr Nilofer Farjo gave injections and extracted. Placement same as before however towards the end there were still some hairs left. Dr Farjo came in to finish the final 80 or so by using stick and place I think it was called, I’m glad they didn’t throw them away! Dr Farjo spent around 30 minutes at the very end checking all the placements, and it felt like a few adjustments slightly with tweezers. All cleaned up, you leave with no bandages whatsoever. Had a post op debrief, given some anti inflammatory and painkillers, along with saline spray and a written list of post op instructions. Unfortunately no Valium. Had some final photos taken and was offered a temporary cap to leave with but my friend was in the car park so had no need to cover up, they let me out through the back door straight to the car park to my mates car and homeward bound. After reading so much about it and having had it finally done felt brilliant on the drive home, I was over the moon (and on Valium 😂) Photos below: 1, 2: How I used to style it 3, 4, 5: Hairline Design 6, 7, 8: Recipient Area 9, 10, 11: Donor area before and after I’ll update again when I get the full number break down from Dr Farjo and then will aim to update every 2 months or so. My plan is to keep expectations really low, and try not to make any judgements until my 8 month check up back at the clinic. Ugly duckling here we come 😱 Apologies for the long post but hopefully it might help anyone who’s thinking of getting an fue transplant done. Happy to answer any questions and appreciative of any feedback. I do have one question at this point, what’s the best vitamin to take? Just biotin or a multivitamin? I’d ideally like just one tablet a day to go with my finasteride to keep it simple. Cheers!
  2. Hi, new to this forum and first time poster! After almost 2 years of research I finally had my hair transplant at the Farjo Hair Institute 3 days ago. I just wanted to first thank everyone at Farjo's who were an absolute pleasure to be with for the day. The care and precision the Dr's worked towards was fantastic as was all the hard work by everyone else involved in the procedure (including pre and post operative care and advice). All the staff there are so genuinely nice it put any fears, concerns or apprehension to rest. I just thought I would post a few photos on to show people the results and timelines which may help others in their journey which I know is far from easy! Time to now hope and pray that all these grafts survive and the hair regrows (which I know from the many posts on here is a long, long waiting game)! Day before surgery:- Day of surgery:- Day after surgery:- 3 Days post surgery:-
  3. Day 9 Scabs all gone, a little bit of pinkness around the edge of the hairline. When did you guys start applying aloe Vera? I’m minded to wait another week. I wanted to archive this as you feel very positive at this point, but at the same time knowing the shed’s coming is a downer. I’m still in awe at Dr Farjo’s work, I know there’s a long way to go yet but the confidence boost already is immeasurable.
  4. Patient who is in his 40's was keen to improve his frontal appearance,he was so delighted with the outcome that he has now decided to improve the crown. He had an average of 2.3 hairs per graft.
  5. Awesome result KJ! Density looks great. Especially for 2000 grafts. Did Farjo ever mention the size of your recipient area? 70 cm2?
  6. Hi All, 6 day update. Received detailed numbers from Dr Farjo: 1-hair grafts: 183 2-hair grafts: 608 3-hair grafts: 1029 4/5-hair grafts: 244 2064 FUE grafts (using the Trivellini device), with a follicle total of 5450 hairs, averaging 2.64 hairs per extracted graft. That sounds pretty good to me? The clinic have been great with post-op help and are checking in with me to see if everything is okay. Update below at 6 days with post op comparison. Donor looks to be recovering well? My aim now is to update every 2 months or so. Really not looking forward to the ugly duckling phase but I've gotten used to wearing hats over the past few years so will let nature take it's course. If you're thinking of getting it done and want to ask me any questions, feel free.
  7. This is not a good choice of Dr. If you researched you will see poor reviews and results. If your considering the Uk then please consider Dr Arshad ! He’s recommended by the forum and so you will be able to find actual patient reviews as well clinic posted ones. At £3 a graft hes affordable also. The Uk has precious few clinics doing good work. Dr Arshad, Dr Reddy, Farjo and maybe Ed Ball. But if you can travel then you could have even more options open to you !
  8. Hi guys, hope you're all well. Wanted to create my own thread on here so you can follow my progress and we can swap ideas and techniques. I had a 2,200-graft HT for a type 3 receding hairline (basically it had all gone at the front). Have just completed my first month, so all the donor hair has basically fallen out. Any advice on how I can maximize the results would be appreciated! This is today's, so 33 days after surgery.
  9. Hi all, I'm a 24 year old female who's lost a bit of hair around my hairline due to surgery which is kinda noticeable when tied back. The rest of my hair is fine though. I've consulted with two supposedly good UK surgeons: Dr Ed Ball from the Maitland Clinic & Dr Farjo from the Farjo Hair Institute. But for the prices they charge, I wasn't that impressed with their work tbh. I consulted with Hasson & Wong before COVID & travel restrictions hit and their prices are comparable to Farjo & Dr Ball but they seem to get far more consistent results. This is something I'd like to get fixed sooner rather than later, ideally this year, but there's no telling when Canada will open back up to international travellers. Are there any good options in Europe for hairline restoration? Or should I just be patient and wait for travel to North America to reopen?
  10. This older patient had extensive loss, lower density hair characteristics and an appetite to make things better. Stage one which we see here to improve the front and top, stage two to extend further back through the crown.
  11. Incredible mate, had mine at farjo’s on Thursday, if I get anywhere near that result I’ll be ecstatic. Thanks again for your thread, it helped me a lot.
  12. This is an older patient from a couple of years ago who wanted to give things a bit of a boost at the front. We carried out an FUE procedure that has matched his expectations. He had pretty light hair characteristics with under 2h/g
  13. Best results I’ve ever seen from farjo and the most aggressive hairline I’ve ever seen them do too! Looks really good, congrats
  14. Ah you’re in good hands with Dr Farjo and his team. You’ll spend months doubting everything, thinking that your case is the one that doesn’t work, but you have to be patient. Easy for me to say who questioned everything 😆. Good luck on your journey
  15. Amazing result, buzzing for you mate, the hairline is so natural. It was your post that made me book with Farjo in the end, so thanks for posting. The big day next Thursday and a similar amount of grafts. Completely empathise with the wind thing, for me it’s always the first corner I turn out of any building 😂 Enjoy the rest of the growing!
  16. This patient had surgery elsewhere over ten years ago with sub optimal results. He had an FUE procedure twelve months ago and is delighted with the improvement to date. When feasible we plan to do a full post operative picture set
  17. Hi All, I've found these forums really helpful whilst carrying out research for my FUE procedure, I've decided to proceed with the Farjo clinic Manchester with Dc Rachel Kay and I'm booked in next week. I intend to use this forum as progress report partially for my own benefit but for everyone else who's is considering a FUE procedure. It wasn't a particular easy decision when choosing a clinic as there's so much choice and not a huge amount of reviews online, I visited Farjo, Crown Clinic and The Private Clinic. I found Farjo to be very welcoming and friendly, Rachel and Cheryl answered all my questions, my second consultation was particularly helpful as I was much more informed about the procedure and the team we're on hand to field my long list of questions once again. Key stats - Late 30's, been thinning on top since my early 20's and things have really slowed down in the last few years, I didn't really seriously consider an op until recently when a work colleague proceeded to take the plunge and his results have been amazing. Agreed grafts 1800 and I'm really excited to get going. I don't take any medication and I'm mindful of taking finasteride whilst we're in baby making mode! I'm open to start taking these in the future and I'm considering starting Rogain. If anyone has any specific advice before the procedure that would be great? I've been asked to wear a loose buttoned shirt, no rich or spicy foods the night before, wash my hair before the op and buy a v shaped pillow for the first few nights sleep. If anyone has any products or hints and tips they can recommend to help with the after care I'm all ears? I'll post my before and after photos next week and let everyone know how I get on, really excited about the procedure! MM
  18. This patient first came to us in 2012 and decided to use medications to start with and see how things went. Five years later he returned and wanted to reinforce the front but with a lot of subtlety,Nothing too much just something that would hold together as he aged. He is very happy for now with more updates to come.
  19. I had a hair transplant two years ago in Europe. The result hadn't worked out as I had expected and in all honesty I was disappointed with the extent of the growth of my hair. I'd had 3000 grafts and my hair was better than pre transplant but the density was still a problem - especially under light. It was then that I booked an appointment for a consultation with Farjo London to consider my options for a second transplant. From the onset I was impressed with how my enquiry was handled and the highly knowledgeable, yet personable, representative on the phone. I felt at ease immediately and felt confident that my consultation would be worthwhile. It indeed turned out to be - but not in the way that I might have envisaged..... On meeting the Farjo surgeon I was instantly impressed with the care and depth of consultation. I was able to have my previous transplant scar assessed fully and the quality of the transplant. Questions that I had previously had were answered there and then as there were no language barriers or long distance call and there is no substitute for in an person consultation rather than an online one.... The surgeon carefully inspected me for the transplant but then noticed hair growth irregularity on the side of my scalp. And also a loss of facial hair. He asked me about this. He then explained to me that he believed I had a rare form of aggressive alopecia...one that would render a hair transplant impossible. Not only did this explain a cause as to why my transplant hadn't taken to a greater density but, more importantly, enabled me to take action by seeing a specialist so as to try to prevent further extensive hair loss through this condition. I was not able to undergo a transplant with Farjo due to this pre-existing condition. They had properly screened me. I'm grateful and thankful that their surgeon was so careful and experienced. I would wholeheartedly have gone with them if I'd have been a candidate for surgery. In a shot. I would certainly advocate investing properly in a hair transplant. If you are reading this and are choosing your hair surgeon bear in mind that contact with overseas surgeons is not the same as having one in your home country. Whilst price might be a consideration - and understandably so - this is not a surgery to half invest in. Your scalp is precious. Had I not gone to Farjo I could have been in a very different position with regards to my remaining hair and retaining it. At least now I have some chance rather than none as I would have carried on otherwise regardless. To this extent I am recommending Farjo and with gratitude.
  20. Meant to state this in the title but I'm only at the 6 month post op stage Some of you may have seen my before and after pics in a previous thread, http://www.hairrestorationnetwork.com/eve/174503-my-hair-loss-story-2000-grafts-dr-farjo-6000-grafts-dr-hasson-4years-post-op.html I've come a long way thanks to Dr Hasson and his team! I can't thank them enough for their help and support, theres a reason why Dr Hasson is considered by most to be the best in the business and that reason is his consistent, great results! He's certainly changed my life for the better... i literally look 10 years younger than when i first met him (2007) Anyway just under 6 months ago i had a small surgery to slightly modify the hairline, don't get me wrong it looked great pre (this) op (as you can see from the link to the previous thread) but I'd always waned a slightly straighter hairline, already I've had fantastic growth and even with such a small amount of grafts the improvement has been astronomical. I also hadn't posted any pics of my crown work i had in (? 2012, 1000 grafts) so I've also included a quick pic from above to show the improvement in the crown. I'll update with better pics as soon as i get some but heres what i have for now.... 4 pics indoors in natural light with my hair styled messy, the above pic is also of my hair messy and the last pic was at approx 5.5 months with my hair styled back with gel. I'm 6 months post op on november 5th so I still have improvement to come.... The last pic isn't showing scalp its just the outside light on the hair.... u literally can't see any scalp at all however my hair is styled thanks to the genius of Dr Hasson and his team. I can't recommend them enough and i owe so much to them. Comparisson pics: Pre-op 2007 (1 year post Op Farjo) 2012 (before crown work) 2015 (6 months post op hairline) Pre-op 2007 (1 year post Op Farjo) 2012 (before crown work) 2015 (6 months post op hairline)
  21. Hi everyone, I've been on Finasteride for a while now and have had the dreaded libido drop. I've mentioned it to my surgeon Dr Farjo and in light of this conversation have reduced my weekly dose from three half-tablets to two, but it hasn't made a massive difference. Can anyone offer any tips to manage this particular side-effect?
  22. Fantastic result so far. What a transformation! I must have had my surgery a month after yours (also by Dr Farjo) and I’m equally as pleased with my results.
  23. Hi everyone, not been on for a while but thought I'd share some progress pics. Am nearly eight months in now. The first two pics are when the hair is relatively dry. The third is a bit better. I'm absolutely delighted with the results so far and thoroughly recommend Dr Farjo and his team.
  24. This is an older patient who has maintained hair at the front and top but his back area was causing him some anxiety. We did an FUT procedure just 8 months ago and things seem to be developing in the right direction. Mick
  25. Hi Folks Am a newbie and am keen on an HT after many years of hesitation. Came across HRN's excellent site and have got so much from it in terms of info. Farjo seems to be mentioned lots on here with generally good comments so I started delving deeper. Obviously he has an amazing list of celebs who have used the clinic. However yesterday I came across this Which has a lot of bad content on Farjo. am a bit unsettled now - could be simply a nut job with an agenda or a genuine patient who had a poor experience...anyone have any thoughts? Thanks
