Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. Hi, so now I'm back with a FUT procedure with Dr Blake Bloxham in Great Neck NY. Had the surgery this morning. A little about my problem... I had FUE in Turkey 6 years ago, but it didnt give me the density that I wanted. Sometimes it looked great, but then sometimes it would shed so bad that I could see my scalp. I dont know why I go through this process on a 4-6 month basis. Anyways recently i started lifting weights and losing fat, and I noticed even more shedding. Pics are attached.... Reason why i jumped into FUT instead of FUE again... my donor is looking some what thin already and I didn't want to compromise it more. Dr Bloxham recommended doing FUT which will allow my to get more grafts overtime vs doing FUE which will limit me and potentially leave my donor looking thin. He said I can do another 3700 FUT in the future if needed, but also is saying that he does not think I will go into an advanced hairloss pattern. But FUT is a good way to hedge our bets
  2. I wanted to start this thread to document my upcoming procedure with Dr. Bloxham (feb. 4th). A little nervous about getting this done not only because it’s fut but because my first procedure didn’t give me the density I wanted. My hair loss has stabilized at least that I know of it’s been the same before my first procedure and hasn’t changed after. As far as my native hair. Any one that has had an Fut procedure how was the recover as far as the scar ? Pain wise what was the worse part ? How was the stable removal did it hurt ? and has anyone ever got smp into the scar to help camouflage it and if so do you have pictures ? thank you! btw my 1st procedure was documented on here if you search it with Dr. Nader in Mexico.
  3. I see this comment from Dr. Bloxham saying electrolysis can be effective.
  4. You said you are in the New York area, so if I were you I would check out Dr Bloxham (Feller and Bloxham) for a possible scar reduction. Dr Bloxham has been doing some excellent FUT work and has been getting some very good, barely noticeable FUT scars. There are also several other Drs in NY who do FUT work and should be able to do FUT scar reductions as well if you want to check them out including Dr Robert Dorin, Dr Carols Wesley, and Dr Robert Bernstein
  5. Hello there folks - long time lurker in this forum. I finally decided to go in for my procedure this week. I chose Dr. Scott Alexander in Phoneix for my procedure. I had consulted with a few other doctors as well, and all of them gave me pretty much the same recommendations (except one): 1. Dr. Blake Bloxham - 2500 - 3000 FUT 2. Dr. Jae Pak - 2000 - 2500 FUT 3. Dr. Sahar Nadimi(Konior) - 2500 - 3000 FUT 4. Dr. Shaver (Bernstein) - 2500 FUT 5. Dr. Hasson - 5000 FUE 6. Dr. Alexaner 3000+FUT I also tried contacting Dr. Gabel a couple of times, but didn't get a response. I decided to go in with Dr. Alexander because of his excellent results that look extremely natural. Also, he was closer to me than the others (I live in NorCal) I am not going to bore you all with the details of my history - but just a quick background - Norwood 5A, Age 28 and been on Fin for past 1.5 years. I initially had a FaceTime consult with Dr. Alexander where he examined my hair and answered any questions I had. He recommended a 3000+ FUT as a first procedure to address the hairline and frontal scalp. And another 3000+ FUT after a year for the crown area. I booked a procedure date with him for Sept 10th. Since he had not physically seen me before, I was asked to come in the day before my procedure. He examined my donor and drew the hairline he thought would look good. I liked the design. I was out in about 20 minutes. The next day I was asked to be in the clinic at 7.30 AM. I was kinda nervous in the beginning. I had to sign some paperwork and they offered me a Xanax (which I refused). I then went in to meet Dr. Alexander. He started by drawing the hairline again. A few changes and we were ready to start. I was numbed at the back and he started to cut out the strip. This took about an hour. I was told I have thick skin. LOL (turns out my Mom was right all these years) Dr. Alexander then started stitching me up. He uses two layers of stitches. This procedure took about 1.5 hours. In the meantime, his techs started dissecting the strip in the next room. I was also asked for my choice of lunch. Next, I was numbed up in the front. Dr. then started making the incisions into which he would place the grafts. He told me he wanted to concentrate and not to talk to him. I selected a movie, and let him do his work. This took about 2-3 hours. I then had a quick lunch and went back into the procedure room. The techs then started placin the grafts into my head. Dr. Alexander only came in to numb me up when needed. The techs took turns working on me (about 4 of them in total, 2 of them planting hairs at one time). This took about 3.5 hours. I finally finished around 5.40 PM. A couple of tips for others looking to have a HT soon: 1. Eat well the morning of your procedure. I usually do not eat breakfast. But since this was a big day, I had a light breakfast (I couldnt eat well because I'm not used to it and I was nervous). Even though you are sitting the whole day, you get exhausted. Also its good to eat well as you will be medicated. So make sure you have a good breakfast. 2. A neck pillow is a lifesaver for the first few nights after the procedure. It prevents your implanted area from rubbing against the bed/pillow and gives you good neck support. Below are pre-op photos: Hairline design: After Incisions before graft implants (during lunch): Immediately post Op: Day 1 Post OP after rinsing the area: Donor area (not the best pic): Day 2 post Op: That's all for now. Will keep this thread updated as often as possible.
  6. Hi Everyone, First, let me thank all of you for everything you do here. Ive been a long time lurker of a bunch of forums and this one is by far, one of the best and most informative. I've finally decided to take the final step in my hairloss journey and going with the surgery A little bit of background: 33, male, men go bald in my family around 28-30, I used avodart/Dutasteride for a few years and stopped 5 years ago.. and thus, it progressed. I've consulted with a few doctors after reviewing multiple recommendations from diff forums, and landed on the list below. My budget is app 25k U.S dollars, and preferably would do it this year or January 2022. (but willing to wait ofc). Thing is, I think I nailed some really strong options, and would love your thoughts? I've also attached my pics below if that helps. Interested in getting volume in front/close the temples and some work on the crown. (I did the awful line which I sent to the doctors as well for them to have an idea) I will say, I'm pretty close to closing with Bloxham, as he can do it this year and has been super responsive (and the feedback I get from everyone here in the forum is pretty incredible). I'd say my top 2 preference would be him or HLC. Appreciate all of you!
  7. Just want to start this off with saying it has only been a couple days since my procedure but I’m extremely pleased. I was among the more unlucky ones that started to lose their hair in the late teenage years. I am about 22 years old and my hair was holding me back in everyday life, as odd as that sounds. Having to always wear a hat, gets old as I’m sure everyone o. here already knows. I’ve been doing research on different clinics for about 2 years, many telling me I needed 4k FUE grafts or FUE was simply the best option, crazy in my opinion. I finally came across Dr Bloxham and I couldn’t be more thrilled. His response time and approach to help my personal situation really made me feel like he cared. We both agreed FUT was the way to go and quickly setup an appointment as I was eager to get this done ASAP. To back track a little I started taking finasteride for about a year so far and have noticed a huge improvement in hair quality and has seemed to almost stopped my hairs recession. Back on topic now, January 8th 2020 was my appointment date, I arrived extra early, welcomed by a very cheerful Dr Bloxham. Long story short we agreed on everything and got started on the procedure. Throughout the day Dr Bloxham and his team were nothing but amazing, if your worried about pain, don’t be, just be prepared to sit around all day. Dr bloxham constantly made sure I was okay, and answered the million questions I had which I really appreciated. After a long day they prepped me on how to take care of myself, and I was on my way back home. All and all I’m so glad I chose Feller & Bloxham Medical, I would recommend anybody. I will attach some before an after pictures and I will do my best to update every couple months to show progress. I apologize for the book, and if there was anything I didn’t explain or was unclear feel free to ask me! I’m still very new here so bare with me. I know it’s still very early but I hope to continue to share my result with you guy!
  8. Hello everyone - I've been on this site with an account for almost 3 years now, and I honestly can't believe I actually pulled the trigger haha. It still hasn't hit me yet. Some of you might be aware of the amazing results I have received from finasteride alone (here), but over time, those results haven't really held up, so I decided to get a hair transplant to rebuild my frontal third. I was originally planning to see Hasson and Wong in Canada earlier this year, but due to COVID and travel restrictions, that was no longer a possibility and I was losing valuable recovery time as each month passed. I am still working from home, and laying low as we get ready for the winter months is just too perfect of a time to get a transplant for me to pass up. I already had an in-person consultation with Dr. Bloxham last year, so he had already seen me, and I was comfortable going with him. Luckily he was able to get me in on such short notice. I won't bore everyone with the regular details, but overall the procedure was pretty smooth. Here are some quick notes: Procedure Date: 11/4/2020 Total Grafts: 2561. Singles: 1051. Multi (2s and 3s): 1510. I was kind of disappointed to learn I had so many singles, but oh well... When I asked him how my laxity was he responded "very good". A tech said I have "beautiful grafts". Fingers crossed that means a good result The numbing injections hurt much more than I thought they would. I would say 7/10 on the first pass, and then 3/10 on the later passes. The years of experience of all the techs working on me ranged from 20 years, 10 years, 10 years, 6 years and 3 years. So that was comforting that they had been with the clinic that long. They were all very nice. In the hotel after the HT: In the bathroom at the clinic. Last pic pre-HT😅
  9. @JohnAC71, it seems FUT is my best option. I lean towards Diep since he has a long history of good results (albeit with some controversy) and he lives right in my area. Healing from surgery while being on home turf eases a lot of the anxiety. That being said, Bloxham is also another great option and I'm considering him greatly. His FUT scars are nearly invisible and his transparent honesty in his videos is extremely appealing. I just can't seem to figure out why Diep's results are more spectacular than Bloxham's, who seems to go for a more conservative approach to hair restoration. Ironically, Diep quoted me 2500 FUT while Bloxham quoted me 3000 FUT. So if anything, Diep is the conservative one in this situation. Not sure what to make of that. Perhaps Diep just has more experience eyeballing Asian hair from pictures (Bloxham's YT channel seems to only feature 1 Asian guy on it). Edit: Further thoughts seem to be I'd be rolling the dice with Diep, or I could go for the more conservative, consistent Bloxham.
  10. Well if you are ok to take finasteride for the rest of your life and you are sure you want to keep your hair longer, then you can basically go to any ethical Dr, like Bloxham for example and tell him to set up a plan for you. I am no Dr but I just want you to be sure before you through with anything. It might work to do FUT/FUE combo and get good coverage, but that will someone like Bloxham tell you. Always when you have quite a large area to cover its difficult to get full coverage. You need to start with FUT, if you dont have a extremely good donor area and maybe amazing neck beard. If you decide on FUT you need to know that the scar will forever be there, you need to keep your hair a little bit longer to hide it, even with SMP it will not be hidden.
  11. In recent years I can think of Dr Bloxham getting trained and using FUT, but who else ?
  12. Were these pics taken before or after a morning shower? It could be that your hair is a bit oily and it's clumping together. Definitely get a miniaturization test with Dr. Bloxham, he'll let you know what's going on.
  13. Im turning 35 in November and consistently been on Fin since Jan 2020. Might miss a dose 3-5x a month. For reference, I visited Dr Bloxham here in NY,
  14. Thanks for your response, it was comforting to read. I'm already scheduling an in-person consult with Dr. Bloxham. I think he'll give me an honest assessment. Fingers crossed.
  15. At this point, I'm very eager to get a hair transplant (currently monitoring my response to finasteride and seeing if I've stopped the loss progression). I'm still curious about a few things: 1) What is the long term efficacy of a hair transplant? My parents dismissed it and said HTs only last 5 years. Is this true? I believe the transplanted hairs remain while the rest of the natural hair falls away, but can finasteride effectively plug the leak? 2) To this date, how many HTs have gone bad and patients have actually been killed, maimed, seriously injured? Is there a serious chance of injury here? Can it be mitigated by going to a top surgeon (ex. Diep, Bloxham, Hasson)
  16. Thanks for this really great response and bringing my attention to DUPA. Unfortunately, I'm a diffuse thinner. I have thin sides. My back/donor is "ok", but I'd hardly call it thick (it is at least the thickest part of my hair). I posted pics in another post. I'm taking finasteride right now and am hoping I'm a good responder. I'll most likely try to schedule an in-person consultation with Bloxham before any surgery so I can get his opinion. He seems like an honest surgeon and would give me good feedback.
  17. You have some great surgeons on your list. I think Dr. Gabel was trained by Dr. Konior. I would also consult with Dr. Bloxham. He's been putting out consistently amazing results: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC--zjdaJBprxvp9qO3HQbog Feel free to reach out anytime
  18. 45 yo WM ... stage 4.5-5 (what I thought, but 5-5.5 what the Dr thought) male pattern baldness ... was considering an FUE procedure So I called Dr Wesley's office - not even a meeting until mid-Sept. I saw Dr Stoller (it was a 2 week wait), but kind of on the fence with the experience. Did some digging on Dr Wolfeld and found out he worked for/with Dr Bernstein for a while and, even though wasn't reviewed anywhere, should have the skills necessary. NYC doctors in general, seem to be conservative on number of grafts done in 1 session (not sure if it's because having large assistant teams is more expensive than say in Turkey?). He recommended ~ 2200 grafts to tightly pack hairline and mid-scalp leaving fewer for the crown. Even though my crown is thinning, when it's fully grown out it's not totally bald. The extraction was done robotically with 0.9 punch (but implant-site incisions manually). I've done some digging and there seem to be 4 lines of thought out there: 1. FUT only (Bloxham and Feller) 2. FUT or Manual FUE only (Wesley) 3. Robotic FUE done by true specialists (like Bernstein and Wolfeld) 4. Robotic FUE done by unqualified users (which is what pros are warning against) Having read Bernstein and Wolfeld papers are decided to trust his approach. Voila, just had 2200 done FUE with his team. Some of his staff (which was amazing) also came from Dr Bernstein practice. All-in-all the experience was very good (I am only 1 day post op, so will post an update on the results in the future) P.S. My only concern (for now) is that the drew (and implanted) the hairline almost an inch above where I still have a bunch of my hair. It may not be a problem given that my hair is very straight and grows forward, so the implanted follicles will mix in with the natural hair ... (I hope)
  19. @Gatsby So far, I have consulted with Dr. Bloxham (and Diep). Bloxham quoted me 3k FUT grafts, and said I'd likely need 2 operations total to cover my entire scalp. He honestly seems like a standup guy. H&W have not gotten back to me since filling out their online form.
  20. @JohnAC71 Yeah, Diep's experience and long history does not go unnoticed. Bloxham's partner is Feller, who seems to have been in the business for a long time as well. As of now, it seems the most critical information for my research is Diep's performance with FUT and his FUT scars. If Diep's FUT scars are within range of Bloxham's, then I'd be comfortable going forward with Diep. If not, then this is still a toss-up and I'll continue spending my work day considering the two of them haha.
  21. Over the years I have had about 6,000 Grafts done over most of my head from Dr. True in NYC. I was mostly satisfied with the results but 2 years ago I had decided I wanted a little touch up in the front corner since it was the only area that I feel he didn't come out well and I felt I had enough donor hair to do the work. After doing extensive research and hearing all the great reviews I decided to go to Dr. Bloxham of Feller Bloxham who was closer to me and seemed to have more experience with FUE since I could no longer do FUT because of excessive scarring. Dr True was not comfortable and experienced enough to do it. I did one touch up of about 250 grafts and then came back a year later for another 150. And will tell you the results were excellent and natural and I still have a fair enough amount of hair in my donor area so that it looks full. Though both surgeons are very good I would put Dr. Bloxham a star above Dr. true for two reasons. Number one he is more experienced and confident with FUE procedure and secondly his bedside manner is by far much better. He takes the time to make sure you are comfortable and feeling no pain and is just more personable and friendly. As I said the results were excellent so if your planning on trying this I highly recommend him. BTW if you are coming in from NYC his office is about a 7 minute Uber ride from The Great neck LIRR train station and there is ample parking at the building if driving.
  22. Well, Dr Bloxham just got back to me, a little different than what Dr Nadimi said, but maybe Dr Nadimi is similar in that she would just be concentrating on the frontal region also, just with only 2000 grafts. Anyways here is what Dr Bloxham said.......Based on what I see here, it looks like you would be a good candidate for surgery. It looks as if you have pretty advanced -- and diffuse -- thinning somewhat from front to back. Typically it takes two large FUT procedures for a total of 5,000 - 6,000 grafts to restore a scalp like this. Most patients can safely do around 2,500 - 3,500 in a sitting, so it sort of breaks down to one large surgery for the frontal half and one for the back. I think the best approach is starting on that frontal surgery now. We will go in, safely steal out as much as we can -- and my estimate would be around 2,500 - 3,500 but I am happy to do more if we can get it, rebuild a new hairline, densely pack the frontal scalp behind it, and then strategically work back as far through the mid-scalp as possible. The potential second procedure -- which is always optional -- would basically be just starting where we left off and finishing off the rest of the mid-scalp and crown region
  23. Thanks for the input. I've spoken to most except for Rassman. I'd say either FUT/FUE , although some of these mainly just do FUT like Feller & Bloxham (I think Bloxham does most of the surgeries). My only concern with H&W is that they seem to do high megasessions and that just makes me a little anxious personally. I'm looking for someone to do ~2000 (maybe little less) mainly hairline and midscalp. I also heard about dr. robin unger the daughter of walter but her before & afters don't seem so impressive. @Runitback thanks for providing waitlist times, does anyone happen to know the others? I've spoke to most prepandemic so figure waitlists are now longer
  24. Rassman is an industry veteran but no longer at the same standard as the rest of the list. Jae Pak who I think trained under Rassman is similarly below par in my opinion, these are realself celebs in that they (or their marketing team) responds to ample questions on the website to get their names out but ultimately they aren't at the top of the industry. Not to say the rest of the list are bad surgeons, but the only options here I personally would happily pay money for are Konior, Hasson/Wong and Bloxham. The rest don't differentiate themselves from the pack in an impressive enough way for me to consider them or don't reach levels of what I would desire for consistency/aesthetics for the price. In terms of hairline aesthetics and density Hasson in particular is above the rest. Wong and Konior do some of the best crown work in the world, Konior being one of the best generalists simultaneously and who I'd choose if money wasn't a consideration. Bloxham and Nadimi at Konior's clinic are in a slightly lower bracket albeit both significantly cheaper than Konior and both doing consistently good work. Nadimi occasionally too conservative for my taste however. Wesley does good work but for the price I can't see a convincing reason not to choose Hasson/Wong if those are the main considerations.
  25. Exactly this ! And yes Dr Bloxham is doing really good work.
