  1. I'm debatign shaving my hair down to a stubble (kind of like a 5 o'clock shadow). I had a HT back in May of 2004 for 1000 graphs. In order to shave my hair down, I think I would need to cover the scar to feel comfortable. Will FIT or FUE cover this scar up? I think my scar is significantly thin. I honestly cant even feel it, and I currently shave the back of my hair down with a 2 guard and no one has ever said anything and I cannot notice it. Also, is FIT more expensive than FUE? Who are the top docotors that perform this in the US?

  3. I read through these posting rather consistantly. It seems there are many, many products that can help. I have had one HT in May 2004 and looking back now I was premature with my decision. It caused shock loss which never recovered. My hair pre-transplant was dense, but has difussed since. I wanted the temple area addressed but MHR thought I should also have grpahs placed on top (which subsequently caused the shock loss!). Anyway, I dont think it's bad and would like something other than propecia to take. Some people on here seem like they take a million things and it seems some work. I really dont want to take or place anything that is noticeable like dut. I think maybe dut is like a cream or something that people place in their hair to cover the scalp. I saw one guys story of how someone hit him over the head with a pillow and the stuff left a streak across the pillow which embarrassed him. My hair loss isnt horrible at all, but very noticeable to me. What products can someone recommend? Is there a special shampoo or anything that can cause slight regrowth? A pill? Something not noticeable? Also, where do I get these? Are they prescription only? I can tell that most here are much more knowledgable than I am and I do greatly appreciate any help you guys can offer.

  5. Hey finallyfree. Thanks for the pics. I think your buzz cut looks great. How do you think it would look if you grew it out some? On the top front, my hair has probably thinned out to 50%. I dont think too mnay people have noticed except me. When it gets cut too short, I think its more noticeable. When I use to put products in it, I think one might be able to tell. In the sunlight, I can see through it and see my scalp. I'm curious how mine would look but am still too scared to take the plunge. I think I would also like to have FUE done to fill in the scar. I dont think my scar is too bad as it is so I'm thinking 200 or so would suffice. Also, would did your work? Thanks again for the info/help!
  6. I currently shave the back and sides down to a 2.5 and it isnt noticeable. I assume anymore and it would be. I'm also considering having FUE placed in the scar area. How many graphs would this take? When I said shaved down too I was refering to something like a 5 oclock shadow. No guard. Will FUE placed in the scar area cover this up or no? I was hoping to do a 500 grpah procedure using 150 or so to cover up the scar, and then to have the remainign 350 placed in the front temple area for a little more density. Any good docotors in Chicago to recommend? Also, I cannot really feel the scar at all but shaving it down that short (no guard) will it show that much? It seems everyone is unique and the only way to find out is to do it. I did see a pic of a guy who had FUE placed in the scar and he shaved his down without using a guard and it looked great. Another thing I'm worried about is the "bumps" where MHR placed the graphs. Will these be noticeable. It's been about 16 months but someone mentioned that they use mini-graphs and they might show a little. Also, since I only had 1000 graphs done, they did a single strip. Any feedback or advice is greatly appreciated guys.
  7. Can anyone recommend a good FUE doctor in the midwest. Also, using FUE to cover up a scar seems like it works for people buzzing their hair down. However, wont the transplanted hairs (assuming you also place some on top) have the little bumps everyone talks about? I had my first done, 1000 graphs in 5/04, by MHR. I cant really tell if bumps would be noticeable or not. Do the bumps really exist or are these from older techniques used years ago? Thanks!

  9. I've been contemplating buzzing my hair down to a stubble. Two things I'm worried about. First, the bumps that everyone talks about. It's been a year since my HT and I'm curious how noticeable they will be. I had 1000 graphs done. Second, is the scar. I assume it would be noticable. I think I'm comfortable buzzing my hair down, but would like to keep a stubble look. I've head FUE can cover the scar. Anyone know of a good FUE doctor in the midwest? Made the mistake of using MHR the first time. Also, do you not require as much hair to have a normal look when buzzing it down? My fear is that buzzing my down would make the top look bad. I would say just the very front of my hair line is thinning, with some receding at the temple. Any help or experiences you guys could share would be great!

  11. Is there no one that can tell me how noticeable the bumps and scar will be? Also, how does thinning hair look when it is shaved down?
  12. I had my HT in May of 2004 (1000 graphs). Although I took my time in making my decision, I now question whether or not I should have done it. Like many here on the site, my receding/thinning was something that truly bothered me and was effecting my life. The HT actually caused my hair to thin even more (shock loss) as MHR never warned me of this risk. If I would post a pic, most people would say I have a full head of hair. I got the HT as a proactive procedure, not wanting to look like my father and brother. Okay, here is my question. Does anyone have any experience with a HT and then decided to shave their head down? Not completely bald, but to something like a 5 oclock shadow? I'm curious how the "bumps" will look, how noticeable they will be, how the scar will look (I know it will be seen but to what extent), will the thinning area in front be noticeably different than the rest of my head? Any info, pictures would be greatly appreciated. I've come to realize that there will never possibly be enough hair to completely satisfy me when I am bald. Reading through threads it seems like everyone is having to go back multiple times, and then at that, perhaps they still arent happy. I've gotten to the point where I believe I would be comfortable with this, or at least would like to try it. I'm just curious what this is going to look like. Thank you very much for your time!

  14. My experience was a bit different with shock loss. My recipient area was fairly dense. I actually only wanted the temple area done but my unethical doctor told me I should place some graphs in the frontal region to cover future hair loss. Because my hair was still dense, the newly placed graphs destroyed good, existing hair follicles. It is my understanding that these will never grow back. Six months after my HT I started noticing a substantial amount of thinning in the area where the doctor placed the graphs. Currently, 15 months post op I would say I've lost nearly 50% of my density and have not seen any grow back. I do not feel that this is just the progression of my hair loss for two reasons. One, how fast it happened and the timing being right when the HT was done. Second, my family members have receded, not thinned. Just my two cents...hope your experience is better than mine.
  15. I had a procdure done by Dr. Katona. Read my post listed under rsanders36, "I've already had one procedure but now you've scared me". Initially, I felt I did all my homework and research over a 6 month period. Dr. K made me feel the most comfortable. However, looking back now, I do feel that Dr. Katona misled me. I had the Dr. here in STL who also works for MHR tell me that even right now my hair is too dense for a transplant. Ive lost a significant amount of hair since the transplant. So if my hair is too dense now, without question it was then. I have much less hair now than I did before the transplant. Dr. K told me I'd definitely notice a difference (in a positive way). However, he never told me the risk of shock loss and that is exactly what he caused me to have. He never should have placed the grapsh in the area he did. Read my posts as there is a lot of info in there explaining what happened.
  16. I think eventually it would have fallen out. But I do not believe it would have been this rapid. My older brother started receding a few years before I did. At my age, my brother was definitely balding, and I am nearly close to what he was at. Another reason why I feel this is due to the surgery is because I'm 100% sure I couldnt see my scalp when my hair was "spiked/messed" up. Now I can. Essentially, the hair is there, but much less dense. I almost feel like I've lost 50% of it. When my brother and father lost their hair, they receded. Mine has simply thinned. After reading the articles on shock loss I truly think this caused it. Also, I tend to take more after my mothers side of the family than my fathers, where my brother takes after my father. On my mothers side, there is hair loss but everyone experienced it in their early 30's. Maybe mine has just been prolonged some but I never experienced this rapid loss until about 8 months after the surgery. I do have one question. When does shock loss happen? One articel I read said that it occurs right away. That wasnt the case with me. It's just been rapid, and started 8 months after the surgery.
  17. I have been on Propecia since my first HT. I felt like I did do my research. I met with 4 or 5 doctors, waited 6 months to do it, and researched countless hours on the internet. I never once came across the fact that I could lose hair with the transplant. I heard someone on this forum talk about it, did a quick search, and found numerous articles saying that the incision could kill existing hair folicles. Honestly, I had plenty of hair where I have lost a lot. I was never able to see my scalp and now I can when my hair is wet. When did you guys experience this? I had my HT in May of 2004, and I would say I really started noticing it around January 2005.
  18. I just read an article on shock loss. It said that if you are trying to implant hair into an already dense area, the incision made could destroy the hair follicle. When I had my HT the hair in the front was fine. I couldnt see my scalp. However, now, I can. Its been 13 months. Does anyone know how long/soon this type of shock loss is prevalent. I only got my HT because of the temple area. Over the past 6 months I've lost a considerable amount in the area where my transplant was done. Could this be the reason? If so then I'm extremely upset. Sorry if I've misspelled some words but I'm a bit ticked off. Please do send me the info on the class action lawsuit.
  19. Thanks everyone for the advice. I'm still kind of lost on what to do. I'm reading more about "shock loss" and I have no idea if this is what has happened. My procedure was done 13 months ago. Then, all that I was concerned about was the temple area. Now, it's there as well as, where the doc had put the graphs. I think it's impossible to say this has happened because of the HT. Perhaps part of it was though. My doctor never told me about this. Was he suppose to? Quite honestly, now I'm really confussed with what to do. I dont want to get another HT if its only going to make more hair fall out. 13 months ago, I could "mess/spike" the front of my hair and you couldnt see my scalp. Now you can. The hair is much less dense. I would like more info on the class action lawsuit; however, I dont know if I would participate. I'd just like to see more information. I think at this point I'd like to visit with more doctors, tell them what I've experienced, and go from there. I'm actually going to make an appointment and confront Dr. Katona with my concerns and things he told me. When I told the Dr. here in STL my concerns, you could tell he was a bit defensive. Then he told me that he wouldnt have done the surgery because my hair was too dense still and he wouldnt have been able to spread out the graphs accurately. This is two Dr.'s from the same company! Another question I have. If I'm not going to be happy with the way it looks, I'd rather shave it down to a stubble. What effects will the HT have on the way my scalp looks? I've had 1000 graphs. I know there could be little bumps, but how bad will they look? Also, I would love to know what exactly 1000 graphs look like. I still had plenty of hair, and looking back perhaps I was a bit extreme in doing this. However, I looked at it as a preventative action. I really dont have any clue what 1000 will look like when my natural hair falls out. Anyone with any pics of around 1000 graphs? I'd like to see close up and wet if possible. Thanks again for everyones help. I like the idea of this forum for those who are considering a HT. This is obvioulsy a life changing event, one way or the other, and it's nice to see that people are taking the time to help others and share their experiences. God bless!
  20. I had a HT done by Dr. Katona in Chicago with MHR. Everything I'm reading says not to have one done with MHR. But it's too late! I had my procedure done 13 months ago. Quite honestly, I probably didnt need it at the time. It bothered me that my hairline was no longer straight across (losing hair at the temple). Anyway, I felt like I did a lot of homework. I met with many places. I even had one surgeon tell me he wouldnt do the procedure for me even if I paid him because he didnt think I needed it. Dr. Katona placed 1,026 grafts in the temple and frontal region. He told me that I would definitely be able to tell the difference. He said it was a good time to do this, because I would never be bald. My older brother and father both have hair loss. My brother experienced his at a much earlier age. I am currently 28, and its starting to get worse. Now, not only am I losing it in the temple area, but also in the front in general. I use to "mess/spike" my hair up a year ago, but cant anymore because I've lost too much and you can see the scalp. Okay, so whats the point? Dr. Katona said that I probably have another 4000 grafts of donor hair. However, I look at the 1000 that have already been done, and I'm not happy with it. I dont even know how much of this is donor hair, and how much is mine that I will lose. I've been thinking of getting another procedure, but now I'm thinking i would be miserable if it doesnt look good. Even with the scar, I'm half tempted to shave my hair down to a stubble. Not to sound conceited, but I have always been an attractive guy. However, with my hair loss, I've lost much confidence, and I definitley think I'm not as attractive because of it (gee, king of the obvious here). Oh, and I think I was charged like $4000 for it. Anyway, I need some help/advice. Realistically, how many grafts does a guy need to cover his head? I assume I will eventually be bald like dad and was hoping to do something about it before hand. Oh, and I did my follow up in Saint Louis, and the guy here told me that its tough to do the transplant because you dont know where you're going to lose it and it's tough to place the hair in there if it has some density because they cant spread it out as well. So my question to him was, why in the heck did Dr. K tell me I was doing the right thing. Okay, this is going to sound bad but I dont even know what kind of grafts/microscope/whatever was used. Can anyone find out for me? I assumed it was the best, most advanced, and I'm sure I checked it out at the time and cant remember. Also, everyone has bad things to say about MHR so who is a good person to go with? I live in STL but dont mind traveling. Are my expectations too great? Should I get another HT with more grafts? The thing is, I have no clue how much more I'm going to lose but I know I'm not comfortable with the amount that is there now so I cant imagine what I will feel in another 6 months. I would say I've noticed a drastic difference in the past 6 months. When I had my operation, I couldnt see my scalp. I was just concerned about the temple area. Okay, I know I posted a lot here but I would greatly appreciate any/all the help you guys can offer. This is truely ruining my life!
