  1. Anyone have any rough estimates as to how much donor supply the average person has ? I know it will vary but I keep hearing different numbers. On the balding blog I read the following : How Many Donor Grafts Does an Average Person Have? April 6 2006, 1:33 pm PT | Posted in: Hair Transplantation Dear Dr. Rassman, I have been researching Male Pattern Baldness and Hairloss for about 7 years.I am 28 and a Norwood 4. My question concerns how much donor supply the average person has over their lifetime to transplant to balding areas. I know that currently some clinics have performed, 6,000 and 7,000 strip/graft procedures in a session and that even more has been transplanted over several sessions. How much donor hair does the average person have ? It would seem that the average would have to be well over 10,000 and close to 12,000. Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. The answer to this question relates to a few things: Your donor density (average is 2 hairs/mm2) The laxity of your scalp (looser scalps should supply more donor hair) The balding pattern (Class 7 patients lose up to 70% of all of their hair so if this is a possible balding pattern then 1/3rd of the remaining hair number may be the maximum donor supply available to you over your lifetime) The degree of scarring and how your body handles the movement of large amounts of donor hair may be the determining factor on your overall supply. Generally, a person may easily get 5-7,000 grafts (10,000-14,000 hairs) and that number can be pushed upward with good healing, minimal scarring, return of scalp laxity and good donor densities. On the high end, I have transplanted up to 25,000 hairs in some people (10,000+ grafts) with unusually good healing and a good scalp laxity. http://www.baldingblog.com/2006/04/06/how-many-donor-gr...average-person-have/ Is this accurate ?

  3. I just did a search and a doctor at New Hair Institute says he has done 10,000 grafts several times as well. How many grafts can be transplanted in a person in his lifetime? Simple Answer: It depends. From my personal experience at NHI with over 18,000 hair transplant surgeries from the various clinics I have managed, the most transplanted hair grafts on a single patient done under my care was about 10,000 (over several surgeries). There are many patients between 8,000-10,000 grafts. These are often the exceptional case in which the patient had a very high density donor hair supply. Most Norwood Class 7 patients are happy with about 5,000 to 7,000 grafts. We are born with 100,000 (average) to 200,000 (exceptionally high) hairs. Of those, only the back and side part of your scalp is considered permanent hair if you have male pattern hair loss. If you roughly estimate the back part of your scalp to be 30% of your total scalp area, then you can argue that 30,000 to 60,000 hairs in the back part of your scalp can be considered permanent, leaving with about half (theoretically) able to be moved somehow. For a typical hair transplant to be undetectable (so that your donor area scar is not noticeable) I suspect you can safely get 8,000-10,000+ hair grafts over several hair transplant procedures provided that the donor supply can be maintained healthy and scarring is minimal and able to be controlled. Some doctors love to push the numbers. The push to high numbers are for money (to the doctor as he charges per graft), his ego (he can say he has patients with high numbers putting him in the ??mile high club'), or the agenda of his patient. Please be careful that you as a patient know what you are getting into and best be sure that your doctor has the experience by personally meeting some of those patients who have these numbers actually done
  4. Joe, thanks. I thought you likely had over 10,000. How many grafts does this latest patient still have left ? Are there any pictures posted anywhere ?
  5. wow, there seems to be some serious differences in time-frames. When is it ok to lift some heavy weights( squats) etc ?I would think a month would be enought time off for the donor area. I did read that some places tell you to refrain from weights for 4 and 5 months.
  6. hairbank- I don't unfortunately. I heard that the last procedure was fairly recent and brought this patient to over 10,000 grafts. How many grafts has Joe of H&W had altogether ? must be around that number.
  7. Anyone hear about this case ? I heard through a friend that someone at Hasson and Wong has had multiple procedures and a total of 10,000 plus grafts. Any other cases like this ?

  9. My 1-st post here. If hats can cause hairloss, why so few ballplayers, hockey players, football players that are bald ? It doens't add up... -Balding
