  1. Clife8, if you already have not, try use the hairspray maximizer from Toppik. I have been using this from day 1 and it gives me excellent control in spraying where and how much I need to, including at the hairline. I have not encountered any clumping whatsoever and have been able to achieve exactly what I want, using the spray. Using the bottle directly produces clumsy results IMO (I had tried this once to test it vis.a.vis the spray)
  2. Clife8, Congratulations on taking the plunge. I had a procedure with Ron Shapiro on Sep 7th 2006. I was about the same age as you (31 and a half) with exactly about the same hair loss pattern as you currently have , before I had my procedure. You can check my blog for details and pics, and search for other posts from me. I am yet to post my post op 6 month pics. You wont be disappointed with Dr Ron Shapiro. I felt completely at ease to the point that I almost enjoyed my procedure. I would just advise you to be cool and not be nervous. After all this is not for any major disease that you are undergoing this, but to get a fuller head of hair at the end. Thinking about this should make you feel at ease. I did not feel any discomfort at all at any time through the procedure, not even during the administration of anaesthestic. Dr.Ron Shapiro is very down to earth and keeps chatting with you informally through out the process. Importantly the rest of the Shapiro team is also excellent with Matt, Janna and the rest of the team making you feel very comfortable. Post op, the staples will be irritating for a few days, but just follow the instructions to wash your hair and it will turn out fine. Finally, I have been using Toppik as well post-op and continue to use it on a daily basis even now. No one can tell that I have toppik on. My new hair growth (its six months and full growth will take a year or so to determine) combined with Toppik gives such an amazing thick look to my hair. I also take propecia post-op to keep my existing hair. Good luck to you and I am sure you wont regret your decision. Do keep us informed of your progress. Icare4myhair
  3. If a hair loss reduction pill causes sexual side effects, then a question I have is whether a hair loss prevention pill (propecia) can be taken along with a sexual problem remediation pill (say viagra or similar pills). Personally, I have been taking propecia for about 2 months now and have not really experienced any side effects. I do not have much knowledge of the sexual remediation pills either, as I have fortunately not had the need to use any so far. If I had to choose one over the other, obviously, I would prefer hair loss over sexual side effects. But, ideal situation would be to avoid both, if possible. Considering that this may be a situation to contend with in future, would anyone have any information on taking hair loss and sexual remediation pills (say propecia and viagra) together or are they known to cause any problems when taken together?
  4. Thanks, Pat. It was scary all right, with me almost on the doorstep of a MHR procedure. I guess the timing of my chancing upon this site was impeccable. I would attribute it to my last minute desperate browsing of the internet, the weekend before my scheduled procedure (subconsciously perhaps, to find one small reason why I should not go ahead with MHR). As it turned out, your site came to my rescue in the nick of time. No amount of words will be enough to appreciate the great work you are doing. I will keep this forum updated with my progress. Today is exactly 1 months and 10 days after my procedure. I am beginning to lose my transplanted grafts. Will post some more pics in a couple of months, to review progress Several people in similar positions have since PM'd me asking about the the doctor, the procedure, cost and other related HT information. It feels really gratifying to do my bit to help those in the quest for HT knowledge and to give back to this site.
  5. Mark, Thanks for pointing that out. I have now included hair count in my signature. It adds up to 5346 (I wish I had the extra 200 )
  6. Dhoose, You could have told him how 'genuinely' sorry you were about his hair and asked him to try propecia or recommended a HT procedure with a top doctor. That way you could have made sure to bring up the topic of his hair while also doing him a good turn
  7. Eman, Thanks for your comments & wishes (sorry I somehow missed your response). I have since created a blog with description of my progress and some pics.
  8. First of all the subject of this thread is ridiculous, especially initiated about a medical group by someone who seems to be 'genuinely' looking for a HT from that particular medical group Secondly, if someone wanted a response from SMG, I would have thought it a better idea to write directly to them, given that this is possible http://www.shapiromedical.com/contact.htm I find it extremely funny to find a definitive response regarding # of grafts and rates being sought from a top HT clinic on a public forum read by hundreds of people Thirdly, I find it amusing that someone who can spend a few hours creating this thread, reading it and responding to it, cannot find a few minutes to call or write to the medical group directly and get the specific answers to the questions (especially considering that an initial consult has already been done) Lastly, I also found it quite impressive how Jotronic took advantage of the situation to skilfully pull in a prospective HT client to his own medical group. Job well done. (I actually wondered why this could not have been done through a PM) The irony of this thread is evident when the subject line is compared against the end result. But hey, all's well that ends well.
  9. Hi All, Has anyone tried out the new Rogaine foam? Just read about it and was wondering if anyone had any comments about the ease of use. Also, any insight into whether the effect of the new foam will be the same as the original rogaine solution? (the foam also contains 5% minoxidil) http://www.rogaine.com/Mens/?ID=1700
  10. Troy, I was sent samples of Toppik and Dermatch by Janna from Shapiro medical where I recently had my HT. I also bought a 25g Toppik bottle along with a toppik spray maximixer. I sprinkle the 2.5g Toppik on the top and crown areas, and then spray the 25g on the front and along the hairlines. It is working quite well for me, and I have not had to use the dermmatch at all. And it only takes me about 5 mins for the whole procedure and then I walk right out the door for work (no waiting time for it to dry etc). I have attached a comparision pic here of my pre-op photo with a post op day 16 photo with Toppik. Dr.shapiro had also shaved the cut off the thin hairs along the front/hairline during my HT. (Today is post-op day 25 for me). You may want it give it a shot.
  11. MeeKs, I started using Toppik two days ago myself. It works beautifully, you wont believe the difference. Make sure you get the Toppik spray maxmizer(only works with the 25 and 50 gm bottles. I sprinkle from 10mg bottles towards the middle and the crown and then round it off with a spray in that area. I only use the spray in the front and the hairline. Its been working fine for me for the last two days, no maintenance work required or messiness caused. The only thing is that I fear I may get addicted to it and/or start using large quantities because of the effect it has :-)
  12. My long term regime , post HT , at this moment consists of the following: 1)Propecia 2)Dermavite (Doc suggested both Dermavite and MSM and if I had to choose one, he asked me to go with Dermavite). This, I guess would be optional. 3)He also suggested rogaine beginning a month post HT, if I was ok with it. Also, seems like a new version of rogaine will be out shortly, which will be easier to use. So, for now, I am sticking only to Propecia and Dermavite as my post HT regime. Post HT, you would at least have to take propecia in your long term interests of preserving your native hair and possible growing some hair near the crown area.
  13. Jesterscort, I had my HT with Dr.Ron shapiro on Sep 7. You can check my blog for more details. My very first conversation with Matt lasted about 1.5 hours. He took me through several HT related material, and addressed all my questions patiently. I also addressed some of these questions further in detail with Dr.Ron and Matt in person in MN , the day prior to my HT. You may want to focus on reviewing your pics (i hope you have sent some pics to him before your scheduled phone call), and mainly discussing the procedure best suited for you - your goals/expectations, approximate number& location of grafts vis.a vis your donor availaibility, future planning, rates, pre and post op procedure etc. Matt also brought up other relevant details, where applicable, that I had not thought of. I am confident that you wont regret choosing Dr.Ron Shapiro for your HT. Good luck with your HT, if you decide to go with it.
  14. Thank you, Janna and JakeVig. I also used Toppik for the first time today - I just added to my blog a couple of comparision pictures of the front and front-top areas of my hair pre-op and that of my post-op day 16 with Toppik taken a few minutes ago. Toppik seems to be working :-).
  15. One more thing I wanted to add- I owe a lot to this site for proving to be invaluable to me at the right time. Usually I am sensitive about posting pics on the web, especially photos about hair loss, but I am happy and eager to do my bit to give back to this site and to hair loss sufferers. I sincerely hope that my updates prove useful to any potential HT candidates.
  16. Hi All, I had recently posted a description of my recent HT with Dr.Ron Shapiro on Sep 7, 2006. I just found the time to spend a few hours in creating a detailed blog and updating it with my pre-op, post op day 1 pics by Dr.Shapiro/Matt, and several post op (day2, day3 and day13) photos. I would very much like any comments/feedback on my post/blog and my progress. My Story: (This is detailed in my blog as well, Blog link at the end of this post) ______________________________________________________________________________________________ I have been losing hair since my early twenties gradually. I used to sport fairly long hair when I was young, sometimes shoulder length, so i used to notice more hair loss while combing or taking showers etc. Gradually this decreased as I moved into later twenties , most probably, due to the density decreasing and the hair itself gradually thinning out. I used to be quite sensitive to any comments like - hey you are losing hair, or you have lesser hair etc. Not that too many people have made such comments, it was probably only a handful of people and when such comments were made, I just lost my respect for them and probably did not care much for them after that. But the fact remained that I continued to be sensitive to my hair loss. Similar story to most hair loss sufferers listed here. I did not really think about any treatments for my hair loss, to be honest. There was once , in my early twenties when i first started noticing hair loss and went to a doctor and he looked at my head and said that I was fine and gave me some pills for peace of mind - can you believe it? Anyway, it was only very recently, that I learnt about success stories of HTs - even though I had heard about hair pieces, hair weaving etc earlier, but never was comfortable with any of them. I would any day have preferred to bald gracefully than to look like a clown in any of those solutions. But recently, after reading about latest techniques and success stories of HT, I went to Bosley and MHR for consultations. And in fact scheduled a procedure with MHR. Just like for a few other people on the Hairtransplantnetwork, Pats discussion forum site came to my rescue in the nick of time. And I started my research anew by reading through the website in detail. I quickly narrowed my search to a few top surgeons and decided to finally go with Dr.Ron Shapiro due to the great feedback he had, and also because I had happened across his name earlier during my Bosley/MHR research. For some reason, his name had stuck in mind, I would never have thought earlier that i would fly cross country for a HT. I quickly decided to go with Dr.Shapiro, and called Matt the very next day , and scheduled a procedure for the very next week (Sep7). Luckily someone had cancelled and a date opened up that was offered to me and I grabbed it. It all happened to me at lightning speed thereafter. I had never thought that I would decide upon and undergo a HT so quickly , as I had only started reading about HTs about late last year (2005). I underwent a procedure with Dr.Shapiro on Sep7. Everything went great (I have posted my experience of the visit on the ht forum). It was very much like others have described a HT procedure with Dr.Ron Shapiro - great doctor, great person, great team - Matt, Janna and all their other staff, very smooth procedure throughout. I think I would classify as a 4 or so - never asked Dr.Ron specifically about where I stood on Norwood scale. Since I am 31, and my thinning is mainly around the hairline front 1/3 and toward the crown, these were the areas primarily addressed. Dr. Shapiro gave an initial high level recommendation for about 2000 grafts for the front 3rd with about 500 grafts or so toward the top part of the crown, keeping future loss in mind, and also with the assumption that propecia may help keep/grow some hair in that region. I ended with a total number of 2523 grafts for the front 1/3 and some on the top of the crown with about a two finger width region on the top of my head not being touched as Dr.shapiro indicated that I had decent thair in that region and he did not want to risk going through it. Dr.Shapiro cut my thin hairs in the front region and also some small hairs on the crown were cut to enable placment of grafts there. Today is exactly day 15 after my HT - my scabs have healed well and i had my staples removed on day 12. I am noticing a lot of hair loss (probably both transplanted grafts and native hair) after week1. This is happening more as I am starting to shampoo and massage my hair more vigorously now. Maybe I should stop that and be more gentle. I would very much like any comments/feedback on my post/blog and my progress.

  18. I personally feel that referrals to or about doctors , especially regarding hair transplantation which will have a lifetime impact both to one's confidence and appearance, should not be based on a monetary consideration. Rather it should be based on honest and proven information with just the interest of the potential patient in mind. This is just my personal opinion. I was lucky enough to chance upon this site in the nick of time before a procedure with MHR. Based on the invaluable and objective information I found, I chose Dr.Ron shapiro and just completed a 2523 graft procedure with him about a week ago. It will still take time for me to see my results, but just on the basis of the objective manner by which Dr.Ron evaluated my case and spent time talking to me, the absolutely non-monetary perspective by which he conducted my whole procedure (he does not hesitate to say that one needs lesser grafts based on our case even though that means lesser revenue for him, and in fact he even charged me for a lesser number of grafts than he actually inserted) and the overall skill and care he exhibited throughout (this includes post op responses with immediate turnaround)- I am convinced that he is one of the greatest HT doctors around. This has been time and again confirmed by several people on this forum. I also found that he is also so down to earth and always willing to listen and give utmost importance to patients questions (however irrelevant or insignificant they may be). I did not know about Dr.Ron until about 3 weeks ago, and I have now already had a procedure with him and sincerely feel glad/lucky to have had the opportunity to meet him and undergo a procedure with him. I feel confident that I should see good progress in the next few months in my case. I'll keep this forum updated. I am sure there are other great doctors with similar traits/approaches and who dont need any referrals, and I guess we owe it to other potential HT patients to point them to these great doctors without any bias or expectation. I would certainly like to do my bit in recommending a great doctor to future patients without expecting anything in return. In summary - from my perspective, Dr.Ron Shapiro is top notch (for all those who may be reading this now or in future)
  19. Hi All, I am following up with an update from the above thread. As I had mentioned above, I happened upon this site and followed up with Matt Zupan a couple of days before my originally scheduled MHR surgery, and had an extremely long chat with him over phone. He was just great. At the end of it I scheduled a surgery with Dr. Ron Shapiro on Sep 7 (I was lucky that someone had cancelled at the last minute and I was able to get this date, just a wek from the day I spoke to Matt). Based on my discussion with Matt he had roughly estimated that i may need about 2000-2500 in front one-third and about 500 near the top crown I flew into bloomington on Sep 6th afternoon , had a face-face consultation with both Matt and Dr.Ron Shapiro. Dr. Don Shapiro commented that I had very coarse/thick hair (I am indian wth dark hair) in the back and donor area and felt that reasonable density/coverage could be accomplished with lower number of grafts. Dr. Shapiro felt that I may have a total of about 8000-9000 donor hairs. I had also orginally planned have some grafts inserted near the lower temple along the sides, where I have thinned. Because of the highly coarse hair, Dr.Shapiro suggested that we dont do this now, as the appearance would be more the new haor there may be more coarse and may not blend with the finer hair there. I completed my procedure with Dr Ron shapiro yesterday, Sep 7th (9am-about 8pm). Simialr to most of the other posts, I had the injections (about 20 in the donor area and 20 in the front, not too painful), had my donor area shave as well as the area near my hairline shaved where I was quite thin, which was where the majority of the gafts were planned for. The top postion of the crown where I had lost hair was also shaved where a small number of grafts were planned. I was not comfortable getting a buzz cut on the top, between the front and the crown, where i had hair long enough to be able to be able to achieve some concealment. Dr.Shapiro indicated that he would not cut it short if he did not have to and if he could work through it, which is how it ended uphappening. I basically had somewhere between 2000-2500 grafts done (Matt will send me the final numbers along with the photos, I shall post some of them when I get them), mostly in the frontal 1/3 and some on the top of the crown (leaving the slightly lower half of the crown, where I also have a small bald spot, untouched keeping the future in mind and probably any benefits I may be able to get from propecia). The area between the frontal 1/3 and the top of the crown, about 2-3 fingers width, was also untouched as i had fairly hair in that region. Dr.Shapiro inserted some small amount of 3's in this region wherever possible. So far i feel quite good. No swelling yet or too much pain. i am trying to follow instructions as best as possible. I have also been put on propecia (today was the first I have ever started taking propecia, beginning the day after the surgery). I had a lot of baby hair on my lower temples almost reaching above my eyes, and some of it was removed today by laser to make it more subtle and to give a better appearance. I had my first shampoo today, Sep 8th, at SMG, the day after the surgery. I am flying back cross country tonight. As for post HT regimen, I only intend to take propecia, and will possible look at taking Dermavite that Dr.shapiro suggested was very good for hair (it contains Biotin, Zinc and magnesium). Other than this , possibly MSM. But for now, I intend to stick to just propecia. After about three months, Dr. Shapiro asked me to look at using Rogaine, if needed. He indicated I may end up with a density of 30-35 in the front (originally about 0-10), and about 40 near the top crown (originally about 15-20) and since he did not do much to the region in between, probably about 35-40 there as well. I am hoping propecia may help too. I cant even begin to say how great the entire SMG team was during this whole process - Matt, Jacque, Kelly, Christina, Janne, Jane (I may have missed some names) and of course the great Dr. Shapiro. I felt completely at home. Dr.Shapiro is so down to earth that one will be amazed, considering he is one of the best in his field. In fact , one of the senior members of the Hampton inn, who drove me to SMG, told me that he and Dr. Shapiro went a real long way, were good friends, and simply stated that Shapiro was the best and that no one who ever went to him ended up complaining (no one ever bitched was the term he used :-0). He also mentioned that he had frequently given a ride to celebrities to the SMG, though he did not name any. This was my first ever trip to Minnesota, and i found it to be a great place with extremely friendly people. Finally, my sincere thanks again to Pat, all those who responded to my earlier post and of course to the entire SMG team. I dont know how my hair is going to turn out, and I am keeping my fingers crossed. I wil be happy with anything that is better than how it looks today :-)
  20. Hairbank, Thank you for your response. I am aware of Propecia and ROgaine, but have not taken any medication so far. I was told at my consultation visits with Bosley and MHR doctors that they will put me on propecia post my HT, to minimize shock loss and to prevent native hair from falling out. I have set up a consultation appointment with Matt from Shapiro Medical for tomorrow. I will certainly keep you posted. Also, I was curious to know if you or anyone had any comments about the link I attached. Attaching it again. http://home1.gte.net/dschrode/newtransplant-tales.htm Thanks, icare4myhair
  21. Hi All, I just registered to this site today and this is my first post. First of all, I would like to sincerely congratulate and thank Pat for creating this website and doing yeoman service for all those planning for HT. Hats off to you. I am planning for HT myself (I am 31 years old and am losing hair near the front and a some on the crown and am very sensitive about it. My wife does not think i need an HT, as my hair seems to be overall, especially in the sides and back, quite thick and dense and she seems to love the way it is now , but I feel it has thinned considerably in the areas mentioned above over the last few years and have decided to go ahead with a HT procedure). I had first approached Bosley about 6 months ago, and was not impressed with the consulting and meeting with the doctor that I went through. It seemed highly commercial. I was told by the doctor there that I was a NW5 when I can swear that I am probably not more than a 3 or at worst 4. The doctor even commented that he had the same amount of hair that i had when he was 47 (before he had HT) and that he had 17 years over me. That did not do anything to boost my confidence or trust in him. I continued my research and then chose MHR, and have now even scheduled a procedure with them by paying the initial deposit (for an approximately 2000 graft procedure that they suggested, i am not even sure if i need that much). I have done extensive research over the internet (at least i thought i had, and I dont know how i missed this discussion forum until now) and have been browsing this topic for almost 8-10 hours a day for the last couple of weeks. I had researched the IAHRS web site among others, but did not really realize until now that MHR was not as good as I had thought it was. I just thought that Matt Leavitt was one of the best until I read the posts today here. I am really glad that I came across this site today. I have been reading the posts on this site for the last 5 hours, and I have made a decision to forego the amount I paid to MHR and to call Dr. Ron Shapiro's office first thing tomorrow, to ask him if i can be accepted by them for the procedure. I would have to fly cross country, but will only be too happy to do so, after all that I have read about Dr.Shapiro. (I also was highly impressed by Dr. Bernsteins web site and achievements and had a tough time deciding who I should talk to). Either way, I have decided to not go ahead with MHR. I just cant believe how I ended up focussing only on Bosley and MHR until now. I would also like to bring to the attention to the members on this thread, this website listed below, that has raised a lot of concerns about HT from those who have undergone the procedure. I have read these messages over and over again tens of times, and it just gives me the creeps to think about HT , after reading this. I am hoping that some of the members who have undergone the process and some of the esteemed doctors who I noticed are also members of this site, may be able to kindly comment upon. http://home1.gte.net/dschrode/newtransplant-tales.htm I am glad to be part of this group and will keep this site updated about my next steps (I intend calling Dr. Ron Shapiro's office first thing tomorrow, to begin with). I owe a bunch of thanks to Pat and all of the members whose inputs have been invaluable to me.

I owe a bunch of thanks to Pat and all of the members whose inputs have been invaluable to me.
