  1. Something like 6% of people get scalp irritation with Rogaine 5%. The liquid really isn't that bad at all. The foam is said to be crap.
  2. notgoing2gobald, he is measuring it, not weighing it. I think it is far better than just pouring it in your palm and going for it with no consistency. I think the recommended 1ml dose is hard to apply over the whole MPB area (including the frontal sides), and impossible if you have long hair. I have long hair and I use 2ml per application, so that's 4ml of Rogaine a day. I don't recommend it to others, but I've gotten no side effects other than a twice as expensive monthly bill ($60). I live in Australia, so brand-name Rogaine is more expensive. I also don't believe cheaper generics are of the same quality Minoxidil and ingredients.
  3. I believe the best herbal product for hair loss with no known side effects is Red Clover (Trinovin).
  4. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is the body's natural defence against its opposite counterpart, Estrogen (E). While Testosterone (T) does go up in males when DHT is inhibited, this leaves the door open for E to increase to variable extents. E is responsible for the sexual side effects in men, which is the female sex hormone secreted by the ovary and responsible for typical female sexual characteristics. Both men and women can produce these two potent hormones, although E is kept low in men and DHT/T is kept likewise in women. DHT of course is responsible for the initial development of sexual characteristics from the day the male fetus is created and is required for body and facial hair right up to the complete development of a male at the age of 18-22. T is responsible for the development of male secondary sexual characteristics like sex drive and muscle development; however DHT does make T available at the receptor level in the muscle. Suppressing DHT between the ages of 18-22 doesn't seem to have a drastic effect, as DHT has fulfilled its primary role in the body, however, as stated above, some men may experience an increase in E. Although T always increases at the beginning of treatment by about 10-15%, it can go down again, even below the baseline, if more T is being converted to E. Now the main thing is that every-body is different. Some men may experience an increase in their sex drive when their T levels go up and their E levels stay relatively the same and most men will notice no difference in their sex drive or other sexual characteristic side effects at all. Some men will notice slight to severe sexual side effects, and after discontinuation of treatment, will soon notice everything going back to normal as the hormonal system, (DHT, T, and E) readjust to pre-treatment levels. The problem is, in a true minority of men, they may not recover at all. Their hormonal system has been thrown out of balance like the average user experiencing sexual side effects; however, their system cannot readjust itself to pre-treatment state, thus impairing the hormonal system permanently. This can also happen when coming off the drugs despite having not experienced any side effects while administering them. The dutasteride half-life is 5 weeks, but stays present in the body's serum for up to 4 to 6 months, meaning side effects may not subside for this length of time. Any side effects associated with finasteride which has a half life of only 6-15hrs, and may stay present in the body's serum for up to 4 weeks, should subside after a month. Remember that extremely rarely, perhaps 1 in 20,000 men, will be unable to readjust to pre-treatment condition due to genetics or a predisposition. Coming on and off the drugs, changes in doses, and missing doses, can all increase the chance of side effects.
  5. Well, your hair loss doesn't seem to be interfering with your ability to bed women, which is the best thing in the world. Just go for the buzz cut and try to enjoy life, as a hair transplant for you is really far fetched now.
  6. Hair loss in women is caused by increased production rates of testosterone (T), not dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Spironolactone is an unproven topical DHT inhibitor, which won't do you any good. Click Here The only options for women are Rogaine 2% and Rogaine 5%. Rogaine 5% is sold for women in AUS but not the US or UK, but the formulation is the same, the only difference is the packaging. You might want to try Rogaine 2% for 4 months first, and then if you don't see results you're happy with and you don't experience side effects, then you can step up to Rogaine 5%.
  7. Don't make things hard on yourself. Use Propecia as directed, and use Rogaine as directed. Optionally, you can also use Nizoral 2% every third day, and Nioxin Cleanser and Scalp Therapy as your shampoo and conditioner.
  8. Rogaine is not a waste of money by itself if you dont take Propecia. Some men choose not to take Propecia because of the potential side effects, so Rogaine is their only other option, which is effective on it's own. Both Rogaine foam and liquid can preserve hair on the hair line, but not regrow anything significant.
  9. Propecia preserved your hair, that's why your balding pattern has gotten worse quickly over the month you ceased treatment. Hair loss drugs like Propecia, Minoxidil and even Avodart, have the primary fuction of preserving hair, not regrowing it. Unless you've started to go bald within a year or two and have only mild thinning at the crown, then don't expect to regrow a full head of hair. Alcohol has an adverse affect on your overall sexual ability, but more prominently, your ability to achieve an erection. However, because it is a common side effect, it could have also been the Propecia.
  10. The dropper is designed for men/women with long hair, the foam is for men with short hair.
  11. Rogaine is more said to slow down the progression of hair loss, but Propecia is more said to put hair loss to a stop. Regrowth is limited to dormant hair follicles, not dead ones, so this depends on how far your baldness has progressed. A receded hair line or a bald spot contains dead hair follicles, but Propecia preserves hair that is there all over the scalp.
  12. Truth Seeker, you have given this drug a complete trial. At this stage if you're experiencing side effects (aside from the fact you're also not seeing any results) then it's a reasonable time to stop. Some men who don't see results on Finasteride will see results on Dutasteride, but as it is a far more potent drug, it is strongly not recommended for those who experience side effects from Finasteride. A topical regimen is quite effective. Rogaine 5% in conjunction with Nizoral 2% every third day, and maintaining a healthy scalp with a shampoo and conditioner like Nioxin, has been quite proficient, at least in the short term, and may extend into the long term. If your hair loss is extensive, it may also be in your best interest to consider a hair transplant.
  13. Thank you, I appreciate it. Best wishes to you too, Dean
  14. It is important to let your physician know that you take Propecia/Finasteride because PSA levels are lowered artificially and need to be adjusted so the PSA interpretation is multiplied by two. Every drug has side effects, and everybody reacts to drugs differently, some people may notice a surge of side effects, and others may notice none. In extremely rare cases Finasteride has been reported to cause permanent side effects, mainly a loss in libido, but then, so have antidepressants.
  15. That is indeed my advice. I believe by not using any enzyme inhibiting agents until his recovery, this opens the gates for a faster recovery time. I am not a specialist in dermatology as of yet, I am a student working at St. Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne. No physicians give absolute advice, but as I said, most do leave their own experiences with patients or opinions out of the picture and go by the book.
