Dr. Paul Shapiro did not require me to shave my head, but he did not want the hairs in the transplant area to be cut to no more than 1 1/2" long. My transplant area was thinner that the rest of my hair, including the area in front. I had grown my hair out to cover the donor area and had it about 2 1/2" long in front to "float" over the thin area.

It has now been a year since my HT, and I was just over Shapiro Medical Group for a check on the results. All has gone well and I am very pleased with the outcome. Before the HT I did my research, including this forum, and I was prepared for the worse case scenario. But I was very lucky, with the exception of forehead swelling, I did not have a red/purple transplant area, or any other outward signs of transplant. I know where the donor area is, but I can not find the scar. No one noticed that I had a hair transplant! I would once again like to thank Dr. Paul Shapiro and all the staff of Shapiro Medical Group for their help and support. I would highly recommend you to anyone considering a HT. ________________________________________________ follicular unit hairs: 1's - 540 x 1 = 540 2's - 1200 x 2 = 2400 3's - 576 x 3 = 1728 4's - 155 x 4 = 620 DFU's -100 x 6 = 600 This totals 2471 fu's plus 100 dfu's, or 2671 fu equivalent. For a total hair count of 5888 hairs. It comes out to 35 FU per cm2

The photos do not show what you see in person. When I used to tip my head down you could see how thin my hair was on top. Now the thin area is filled in, so it looks like the rest of my hair. I know that what I have now is about 70-80% of the final result.

I could never get good photos of my hair, but thanks to Matt at SMG, I have posted "before" and "after" six months photos on my blog.

My experiance with Dr. Paul Shapiro was the very best. Great doctor and staff, the very best results. It is good that you are doing your HT research and that you will find a lot of the answers on this forum.

Well it has now been six months since my HT by Dr. Paul Shapiro, and I am very satisfied. Now when I bend over to write a check, I am not worried about the former thin area on the top of my head. The area now looks great. After all my research on this forum, reading about various experiances and viewing photos, my experiance has not been typical. Except for a few days of forehead swelling, my transplant has gone unnoticed. I did not have the usual red/purple in the transplant area, so other than the days of using the after surgery spray I did not wear a cap, the new hair growth started up a month later. Sorry no photos, I have not mastered photographing baby fine white hair. So once again I will say that my experiance with Dr. Paul Shapiro, and all the staff at SMG, has been the best!

Bob C To save you searching my past posts - I am 63 and had 2,711 FUs transplanted, with the individual hair count at 5,888. My hair is mostly grey and baby fine (I started turning grey when I was 13). I choose Dr. Paul Shapiro, not only because he was close (that helped), but because the Shapiro Medical Group was so highly recomended. The service I got was friendly and professional. I would recomend SMG to anyone.

The only thing that anybody could see was the three days of forehead swelling. No one new that I had a HT. It has now been three months since my HT with Dr. Paul Shapiro and I have new hair growing already! Looking closely at my scalp (where I knew that the transplanted hair fell out) there are new hairs - almost 1/2" long. The hair in the donor area was a mixture of white and dark hairs, and it is the new dark hair in the transplant area that I noticed first, then looked and found white ones too. I had my HT almost 3 months ago, with Dr. Paul Shapiro, at SMG. My hair is mostly white and I usually keep it about 2" long all over. I have to look very close to find my donor scar, given the length and color of my hair. Right now its redness is the only way I can find it, and that redness is fading. I did not have much redness in the transplant area, and it quickly disappeared. I could would not cut my hair short, but if I did, I think 1/4" could cover the donor scar. Donor scars usually follow a natural ridge in the skull, and wearing your hair a bit longer is a small price to pay for hair on the top of your head! Most people do not know about donor scars and what they look like, unless they had a HT, or are researching having one.

My doctor put me on Zocor (Simvastatin) couple of months ago. Since then, the thining area of hair on the top of my head is getting thinner. Some may be due to shockloss from the HT. Just wondering if Zocor can cause hairloss?
