Hairstyle options and texture
ciaus replied to james blonde's topic in Hair Restoration Questions and Answers
Don't know where you've seen hair transplant results until now, but we have forum sections dedicated to clinics and patients posting surgery results linked below. Eventually the hair will look like it did when it was in the original spot on your head, which can take up to 12-18 months. Alot of the time, even here, you're limited to pictures in the immediate months after the surgery when all the hairs haven't come in yet and fully matured. Guys tend to stop posting after enough of it comes in, getting on with their life. But some guys do continue to post updates into the later months, even beyond the year mark. Maybe some other members can link a few. https://www.hairrestorationnetwork.com/forum/15-hair-restoration-results-posted-by-patients/ https://www.hairrestorationnetwork.com/forum/17-results-posted-by-leading-hair-restoration-clinics/ https://www.hairrestorationnetwork.com/forum/24-hair-transplant-experiences-and-surgeon-reviews -
Yea he's definitely a part of this thing of ours, hair cosa nostra. Lets hope he doesn't start tattooing his face, dad might have to lose some of those oscars on account of bad parenting! But even without the tattoos, wouldn't think in a million years he was related to Tom Hanks at all. Are we sure biological son? not adopted or step son?

As your reply indicates, there's worse things to be than a sociopath when it comes to child safety. To anyone reading this with some honest concern, you don't go to a dermatologist or 'derm' that specializes in skin if you have concerns about medication and hormones. You go to an endocrinologist. Usually after seeing your primary physician and getting a referral. The pediatrician the children go to would also be another good resource.
-
We're talking about your children. Say you do get an affirmative or negative answer from some member -how do you know who they really are? what they really know? what their motivation is? Don't you think your kids deserve decisions and actions based on consultation with someone that has verified professional medical training? (Doctors) If you really do have kids and take topical finasteride, and are not just another 'new' member trying to scare guys away from trying finasteride, be a good parent and go see your doctor, and ask for a referral to a specialist if he can't completely answer your questions to your satisfaction.

Thoughts on the stem cell therapy? Dangerous?
ciaus replied to Scottp's topic in Hair Restoration Questions and Answers
I'm aware of PRP, and like @Gatsby said its value is questionable at best. But that part in your post about umbilical cord blood sounds weird. From what I've read its supposed to use your own blood. And not aware of a cancer risk, but if these people are injecting you with someone else's blood that's the additional potential for infections, etc, from whatever else is in that blood if this fue clinic is shady or cutting corners and not properly screening the blood. I'd be careful about letting anyone other than reputable hospitals do that. One of these treatments is platelet-rich plasma (PRP). PRP is a substance drawn from your blood and injected into your scalp that can purportedly help heal bodily tissues, including follicles from which your hairs grow. PRP is extracted from your blood using a centrifuge-like mechanism that can separate the substance from your blood and increase the concentration of specific proteins that promote healing. https://www.healthline.com/health/prp-hair-treatment-success-rate -
Oral minoxidil article in NYT

No need for that, been doing just fine on 1 finasteride a day. -

ciaus replied to Bb111's topic in Hair Restoration Questions and Answers
Not knowing everything about how minoxidil works in the limited circumstances where it can be effective, is different from not knowing everything about hair loss. Anyone willing to ignore DHT and just pop minoxidil pills for 30 years is going to learn that the hard way. -
Hair Transplant without Finasteride
ciaus replied to JD34's topic in Hair Restoration Questions and Answers
The better audience for this question would be your male family members suffering from hair loss, but even then you won't have a good basis for a decision because hair loss is caused by the unique expression of many genes, some known, some still unknown. Unfortunately there's no may to forecast someone's final hair loss severity. Even guys that do take finasteride, like me, still run the risk of potentially running out of hair down the road. Its just a lower risk because we have lower levels of DHT. Since you're relatively young at 38, you still need to be careful even as a NW6. There is still room for things to get worse, from progressing to a NW7 pattern, or even your donor area hairs starting to substantially thin. Make sure you get a good in-person analysis of your donor area by the doctor before actually doing the surgery. You don't want to be moving hair around your head that is going to eventually fall out anyway. -

Long term oral or topical minoxidil on its own will never be a solution, because its just a growth enhancer. Without also blocking DHT you're just helping your hair to look its best for as long as possible while the DHT continues to do its damage. -
is washing hair everyday bad?
ciaus replied to demezz2's topic in Hair Restoration Questions and Answers
Lets be careful about increasing the intervals between washing body parts. What good is it for a man to achieve a full head of hair, if no one wants to go near him for he stinketh? -
This is about expectation management, his ship continues to sink even with the assistance of medication. Can he be satisfied with a conservative sequence of hair transplants over his lifetime that will always leave some areas noticeably thin or even bare? That's alot to ask for a guy that's still in his 20s, and dealing with feelings of depression.

Micro Needling - optimal choice
ciaus replied to Sado's topic in Hair Restoration Questions and Answers
I don't do this, skin is too sensitive for me personally. This does help topical minoxidil absorb better. You don't have to go all the way up to 1.5, I've read .5 and .75 are commonly used effective lengths as well. There's a video below from a reputable youtuber that happens to use 1.5, talks about the lengths and types of derma rollers/pens you may find useful. -
Get yourself some concealer like hair fibers and/or Dermmatch. You'll need to reapply it after showering, but its pretty quick and easy. There's a forum section on concealers here, read up if you aren't already familiar with them. There are legit ones that work really well. https://www.hairrestorationnetwork.com/forum/28-shampoos-sprays-and-concealers/

I’ve read something and now I’m worried..
ciaus replied to Yan bio's topic in Hair Restoration Questions and Answers
The main reason you want the scabs to come off is so that if you bump or brush your head against something that pulls the scabs off, the hair follicles don't get pulled out along with the scab. Hair doesn't 'need to breath' by exposing it to the air, it gets the oxygen and nutrients it needs from the blood supplies under your skin. The other main reason you want the scabs off is to reduce the chances for skin pores to get clogged, potentially causing little infections like pimples to develop. That's why its best to gradually and gently wash & moisturize the scabs daily so the come off easier. By 10 days your hair grafts are anchored into the new blood supplies, whether the scabs get washed or scrubbed off. As long as you didn't have any incidents in the first 9 days where you bumped or rubbed your head hard against something, causing scabs to come off, you are fine. You just might have a few more pimples during the coming weeks as the skin pushes out the impurities that accumulated when you were being extra careful not washing as thoroughly. -
Is hair transplant a good solution for me?

Yea he has a military style graduation on the sides. If he's trying to go the full 20yrs in one of the US branches, he'll need to keep getting those sides shaved with zero guards. -

Actually hair can be taken from areas of the body like that. Some guys that have been battling hair loss for decades do end up resorting to body hair to help add density in their crown and mid scalp areas. As young as you still are, with this much loss, and on the fence about finasteride, you should be trying to hang on to every hair you got for the unknown road ahead. -

So if you're 28 now, doing the math, that means you started minoxidil when you were about 13? Did you have any actual verified loss by doctors/adults at the time? We do occasionally get paranoid teenagers coming on here asking for help that have no real loss. Anyway, minoxidil just makes your hair situation seem better by thickening the hairs and extending their growth cycles. DHT will continue to take out the vulnerable hairs regardless of how much minoxidil you take. The more you delay on making a decision about finasteride the less potential good its going to be able to do. Once you make that decision the doctor will have a better idea of how conservative to be with your donor hair for the long term. And if you do decide to take finasteride, give it 12-18 months to see how well it works BEFORE you do the hair transplant. You may be able to recover some hair, and strengthen your current hairs to reduce the chances of temporary or permanent shockloss from the surgery. -
Like millions of other guys, I've been cratering my DHT for over 15 years now and loving every extra hair-covered moment of it! And I'm going to talk to your boss about getting some monitoring software on your computer. To help you fight this strange obsession to constantly argue when you don't even care about convincing anyone!

I would say topicals are the future for the more troubled obsessive guys on this forum. And clearly we have a much higher proportion of those than the general population, just like this higher rate of reported side effects. If almost 50% of all guys were actually getting side effects like in this little forum poll, Merck would have never bothered with trying to get it FDA approved for hair.

15 months on dut/fin is enough time to know for sure if its going to stop or slow down your loss enough to make hair transplants worthwhile. If you're still losing and only 26, its time to think non-surgical. You don't want to add unnecessary scarring on your head as well. The remaining options -Shaving it is the easiest and cheapest option. If you have some decent facial hair, letting it grow out can help frame your face, highlight your good features, help hide the bad ones. Working out in the gym, thickening up your neck can also make your head/face look better. -SMP/scalp micropigmentation -Hair system, aka hair piece
