  1. Doublehelix, I am very sorry about your hair loss. I know from experience how a receeding hairline just slaughters your self esteem and confidence. My hair loss began to be really noticeable at your age. I couldn't believe it--only a year or two before that my hair was thick and curly. As it must have been for you, my hair when I was young was a major part of my identity--it helped me stand out in the crowed and girls loved it. Now, I suffer from a large forehead and thinning hair. My advice to you would be to go on the propecia. I know the potential side effects may sound scary, but like it or not, propecia is your only hope at this point. I'm 23 and I just started this past year. I'm sensitive to most meds, but I have not experienced any negative effects. I only wished I had started it when I was your age, but at that point I had fooled myself into believing that herbs, vitamins, and sal palmetto would bring my head back to its glory days. Although they improved the quality of my existing hair, those products didn't do anything to stop the loss or regrow my receeding hairline. I wish you the best of luck. My advice would be to surround yourself with people who support and love who you are--family,friends and a romantic partner (or partners). Hopefully the scientists will find a cure for this damn disease before we turn 30.
  2. Of course. But if you were in your mid twenties would you get a transplant right now or hold out?
  3. I was just wondering what other users think about the science behind Replicel? As a prospective patient, does it even make sense for me to get an HT given that Replicel could be the answer to all or hopes and dreams within the next 3-5 years or so? Any feedback would be appreciated.
  4. I know the decision to take propecia is not an easy one. In fact, I took just about every herbal and vitamin product I could find to treat my hairloss before I took the propecia plunge. Those herbal products, including saw palmetto did nothing. Ultimately, propecia is the best thing you can do without getting a transplant. My advice would be to try it for a month. If you notice any libido issues discontinue it. I have been taking it for 3 months and have had no unwanted effects.
  5. By BP are you referring to bipolar medication? If so, you have to look at both sides of the coin. Bipolar medications, such as tegretol, typicially are in the anti-seizure family. these meds can be helpful for treating the bipolar, but can affect the way the body utilizes biotin--thus producing an overall negative effect for your hair. You can try to balance this by taking a biotin supplement. Other bp meds such as Lithium and depakote have similar negative effects (loss of hair). However, what's in your head, your mental health, is what is more important. Take the medication that helps you. You can always take propecia/biotin/rogaine to improve what's on top of your head.
  6. I am not a doctor, but I have experienced similar symptoms (without having an eyebrow transplant) You may want to try washing your eyebrows with nizoral (ketoconazol) shampoo. Let it sit for five minutes and then rinse. The shampoo has worked wonders for my seborhetic dermatitis. Hope your issue gets resolved.
  7. Wow. That's just horrible. I feel terrible for that guy.
  8. I have been taking around 4,000 mcgs of biotin for over a year. Biotin will certainly improve the health of your existing hair, but it will not do a thing to stop hair loss or regrow it. A bummer, but it's true. Also, it will be difficult for you to only get biotin from diet--get a high quality biotin supplement. I use Andrew lessman's healthy hair skin and nails formula. I hoped biotin would work miracles for me. It didn't. Use it as a supplement to a Propecia regiment. Good luck.
  9. I just wanted to clarify my statement regarding Charles' before/afters. I do believe that the ones I saw were appropriate for the individual that they were given to. Perhaps, like many of you, I was hoping to see amazing transformations--not just relative improvements. If anyone here has had a procedure with Charles I would love to hear about it. I have read many immediate post-op reviews that were glowing. But I want to know how the results years later have turned out. His practice seems like a good fit, but I just want to make sure that I'm doing my due diligence in research. Also, if any of the moderators (Bill, Pat, etc) had any thoughts, I would certainly like to hear from them. Thanks.
  10. I appreciate the responses so far. I did find it interesting, given my age, that both doctors nusbaum and Charles agreed to perform a transplant if I wanted one. I suppose every case is different. To their credit, both doctors reminded me that my hairloss could get worse, and that I must be conservative in my hopes. Neither pushed me to schedule. In response to an earlier post, I posed the question re Charles because I know that he has such a solid reputation. He's been referred to on this site as "elite" and "world class". That's why I pursued a consultation. The issues with the smear website, the before/after pics, and the incident in Minnesota prompted me to reach out to this community. I wanted to know if anyone else had read about these things and/or any positive or negative experiences they have had with Dr. Charles.
  11. I am 22 years old and I have been suffering with hairloss since I was 17. I would say that I am a Norwood 2. In looking for a potential hair surgeon, I researched Dr. Leonard in Massachusetts, Dr. Cam Simmons in Ontario, and Drs. Nusbaum and Charles in Florida. In June of this year, I met with both Nusbaum and Charles in their respective offices. I met with Nusbaum first, and I was taken with his warmth and calm demeanor. As he examined my scalp and drew my potential hairline,I felt like I was in good hands. Nusbaum noted that I have strong donor hair and proposed 2300 FUT grafts, but wanted me to begin a Propecia regiment for at least six months before I went in for the procedure. I thought that was a fair assessment. I met with Dr. Charles the next day. Like Nusbaum, Charles was friendly and I was impressed with his passionate enthusiasm. Additionally, I liked the hair line Charles drew for me, as it would cover some of the loss I have experienced on the sides/temple area (Nusbaum was against doing this). However, I was not too impressed with his before/after results that were featured in a photo album in his waiting room. Now, here is my question: Is Dr.Charles one of the best doctors, or would I be better off looking at someone else? I know he is recommended on this site, but I'm somewhat conflicted because of Dr. Charles' disclipanary action in Minnesota (where he forgot to re up his med license) and also a smear website I came across (drglenncharles.com). Any feedback would be appreciated.
