zenmunk's Hair Loss Story

Began losing hair around age 24. After about a year, my hair loss progressed to Norwood 3. Around that time I discovered Propecia which had recently been made available to the general public. I took the Propecia plunge and have been on it religiously ever since. August 2011 will be 13 years. Luckily, Propecia has effectively halted my hair loss with little-to-no observable side effects since I started it in 1998.

Fast forward to today, and I'm seriously considering FUE to restore my hairline to Norwood 2. I've consulted three leading coalition HT surgeons so far. First (in-person) estimated 1300 grafts necessary to meet my goal. Second (online), 1200 - 1600. Third (online), 2000. Didn't expect to hear 2000. I thought more like 1600.

I recently consulted the Third doc in-person, and he confirmed that I need 2000-2200 grafts in his opinion. I know some docs are more aggressive than others, but 1300 to 2200 is a pretty big difference; not sure why there is such a disparity. First and Second docs have cautioned me that I should be prepared for a second FUE procedure down the road to fine tune the hairline since FUE is statistically less successful than FUT (Hopefully that won't be necessary).
