A little background info on me. I am 30, have been thinning and losing my hair since I was 19. I went on rogaine at 22, and noticed a huge improvement, but I was young and stupid, and stopped using it. After several months, my hair loss was much worse than before I had started the rogaine. I went several years without using anything to treat or prevent my hair loss, got a really stressful job that not only gave me a number of grey hairs, but caused more to fall out.
In April of 2009 I began using Rogaine again, and it didn't regrow any hair, but I noticed a decrease in my rate of loss. I had always seen the Bosley infomercials on television, and when I was 20 or so really started thinking about surgical restoration, but the extent of my knowledge came from those Bosley infomercials. I never consulted with them, and with all of my attained knowledge in recent years, would never even consider allowing them to look at my head, let alone work on it. It was Fall of 2009 that I I really started considering going ahead with a procedure, did a little research, found a surgeon recommended by this network, consulted with him, really liked him, and worked out the cost of the procedure that would give me the results I was looking for, and scheduled the procedure for the following Valentines Day. He told me 1500 grafts via FUT would give me the density I was looking for, a mature hairline, with a dense frontal third. He even placed some grafts in my crown area to conceal my bald spot. So after the procedure, I waited, and waited with high expectations, until the grafts started to grow in, and I freaked out because the density was nowhere near the image I had in my mind. I spoke with his head nurse, after the 4 month mark, and this was the first time I had heard that a second procedure might be necessary, I had thought I was going to be fine with the one and be done. I had forgotten all about this wonderful network where people come together and share their learned knowledge with each other, it's like a network for cancer patients or any other type of special community. I started posting questions, and pictures of my progress. Every answer I received on the forum was that my procedure was planned poorly, and I should have had twice the amount of grafts I received in order to achieve my desired result. I even consulted with another network recommended surgeon, and he also said I needed a minimum of 3,000 grafts to achieve the results I thought I was going to get with 1,500. I met with my surgeon most recently this July, and he said that I should give it more time, (it was only 5 and a half months at that point) and to come back in December, if I was still unhappy, we would work something out for a second procedure. I also began using generic Finasteride at this point, and have been using it since.
I had noticed a significant amount of shedding after three months, and my hair looks thinner now, than it did in July. I understand that the shedding is a good thing, and indicative of good growth in the future, but I am concerned with two things about my second procedure because of this.
