Hi All -

First - I am happy to be here!

Second, I have a shitload of questions. Not sure where to start. For now, I will just throw some out and go from there.

Q's -

- Does rogaine really work on the front of your head (receding hairline) there is a ton of conflicting answers online. Is something like Retin-A going to help in conjunction with Rogaine for frontal hairloss?? Is this necessary, etc

- I am considering doing something like user: southbeacharchi, I need advice on doctors, costs, likely results, etc

I could go on forever, but I will start here as this post is likely a bit noobish already.

I'd say to stick around this board for a few years. Check out Rassman's Balding Blog, listen to Spencer Kobren's Bald Truth, and look into Spex's Maximum Hair project. There's a lot to learn and it can't be all done with one post. So stick around.

It depends on what you mean by "work".
Both propecia and rogaine "work" pretty well.

But they are more about preserving the hair
you have than growing new hair, but don't
underestimate how important it is to hold
on to the hair you still have.

The meds help you keep the hair you have
and the transplants help replace what you've lost.

They are different tools to attack balding...
both very important in their own right.

I suggest you listen to the doctors videos,
listen to as many as you can over time
because besides finding a great doctor,
they are all educational. If you listen
to all of them you will know so much
more than you do now. Listen to a
few a week and build your knowledge
over time....this is a long journey.

Aaron gave you some great advice!! TWO THINGS.....STAY on the boards!!! BUY SPEXs " Maximum Hair Loss " project...probably cost you around 50 bucks!!! Worth every penny!! Google it and you can find it!!

Minoxidil, whether it be topical or oral, DOES make a difference in most people. Finasteride makes an even bigger difference. If you are losing your hair, those are the two tried and true methods of slowing/stopping it!

Using the two together will create a synergistic effect and really be your best defense against the hair loss battle...also, buy some nizoral shampoo and use it twice a week...really good for your hair and studies have shown it will help with hair loss as well...

Research, research, research......that is the key. Aaron gave you some excellent advice. The combination of Rogaine and Propecia (Fin) is the best defense against losing your hair.

they both work very well. these will be your staple medications pretty much for as long as you are willing to fight for your hair. Its gonna be a life long commitment both in terms of routine and cost so bear that in mind

Your gonna need to get a feel of what is going on in this forum, you will see common themes and many individuals giving feedback and advice from their own experiences and also others.

Its a jouney that is almost like having a another child, I would also suiggest you get maximum hair minimum loss by spex, it will give you every thing you need and make you understand visually and emotionally what hair loss and going about treating it successfully entails. You will find it a resource you come back to again and again.

Ok - A few questions -

Anyone heard of Dutasteride? (BN - Adovart) supposedly blocking like 93% of the enzymes vs like 40% for propecia? Is this stuff better/more effective?

How badly to the side effects mess with people? If you have to take the pill forever, then you'll have the side effects too, wtf? What is the best way to manage this, Viagra?

Suppose receding hair in the front is the only spot I'm having hair issues, can rogaine foam regrow hair that is less than 5 years bald?

Is $4 a graft a pretty reasonable HT price? Does 2k grafts cover a couple sq inches? What if any financing options typically exist?

dustaride is a 2nd generation sht blocker designed again for prostate hyperplasia, yes it is more effective in blocking DHT, does it translate to more effective protection for hair folicles on the scalp. theory says yes , evidence is yet to be proven. It is more potent and more expensive and more potency usually comes with a trade of of increase in side effects, not always but most of the tim eesp when the pathway or mechanism is the same.

Dustaride amongst clinicians for hair loss is left as a last resort, much like treating any illness.

As example Blood pressure went through the round from beta blockers, to calcium channel blockers, to ace inhibitors to angiotensin receptor antagonists, they all work but in different ways , in that mix came minoxidil - loniten by brand, that is the most effective blood pressure medication ut it is left for treatment resistant blood pressure and for hospital - or cardiac surgeon administartion, just so happened that it gave a mushroom growth of hair at high doses 100mg etc.

think of dustaride in a similar way, last resort.

Side effects can become transient i.e they can go away with time

with rogaine again it seems to work more on the vertex and crown/ mid scalp rather than hairline, you will most likely need a ht to build a strong hairline .

The amount of coverage 2000 grafts will give u is dependent totally on the individual, thickness of donor hair, hair characteristics and skill set of the surgeon creating the artistic illusion of more hair, using all the modern ht techniques such as lateral slit, dense packing skilled techs and ultra fine dissection etc.

if you working the hairline you will typically need more as a world class surgeon who will be ale to create a natural hairline will use single hair grafts in the very front and build it back with the the 2 grafts hairs then 3's ect. Again it comes down to the luck of the draw from the donor arae with regards to how many of these types of hair grafts you have. if addressing the crown or mid scalp for example you would use multipe hair grafts not singles. its too individual to generalize. you will only know when they harvest your grafts in the actual surgery.

$4 a graft seems on the cheaper side of the spectrum.

see my HT's as an example o approx 2000 grafts can do note first ht 2250 was spread over a wide area and the 2nd HT we packed 1450 into just the hairline and only 400 into the mid scalp.
