After my HT, I now just look in the mirror and think, "Whew. This is what I'm supposed to look like. I'm restored." I saw it as a necessary procedure to restore things to the way they're supposed to be, like using laser surgery to remove an ugly scar.

Now granted, if I hadn't started losing my hair until I was 55 or 60, I would not care near as much, as that's a natural, expected age for this to happen; it just hits so much harder when you're in the 19-22 age range, just barely out of high school... Especially in our appearance-obsessed, post-MTV generation, extreme-makeover society. Being young is really a bitch these days, unless you're born rich and beautiful.

I liked the part about the Amygdala though; I just learned that term recently, as I've been obsessively researching psychopathy at this site: The Psychopath: The Mask of Sanity
Do a page search for the word "amygdala" and it elaborates a bit on it; I didn't think to link it to hair loss though, that's certainly an interesting connection. Spex's point about the Amygdala causing an extreme reaction when you mentally link your appearance with your survival is outlined in a video here as well, with the term "Amygdala Hijack..."

Quote:
Amygdala Hijack (01:26)

An amygdala hijack occurs when the neuron between the amygdala and thalamus recognizes a feeling as an emergency. The signs of an amygdala hijack are a quick and sudden reaction, strong emotion, and a sense of regret after the fact.
...Sounds like what happens when someone freaks out and buys a bunch of gimmicky, useless fake hair-restoration products and then feels remorse afterwards.

Great post though, it made some neurons light up in my head.
