This 17 year old boy is about 9 years out from radiation treatments to cure cancer in the jaw joint. His entire right parietal scalp is without hair and this causes him a lot of distress. Readers may recall that I posted a similar case that we did last year with a one year update this past May with excellent results, also in a young man. And readers may know that my daughter has brain cancer, so I am only too familiar with what these kids have had to endure.
This family came to see me and we discussed a strip procedure and our first case will place hair more toward the middle, hoping that gravity will allow hair growth to come down and camouflage lower down hair loss. I personally believe that it will take a second case, just like the other young man we did, to get good coverage. I was very frank with the patient and his parents that I have only done one of these cases….but that I am highly motivated to help them, given my personal situation with my daughter. Our medical student is writing this case up for presentation and publication, and he’s been unable to find much in the medical literature so we are all in somewhat uncharted territory. Given the radiation, I am not sure it’s going to work….but I’m certainly hopeful. His recipient area felt like normal scalp, it appeared to have good vascularity and he did great cleaning. He’ll be back in a few weeks for a scar check and then it’s just wait and watch…the hardest part for both him and me. Dr. Lindsey McLean VA

Dr. Lindsey, I truly hope the best for this patient. I can only imagine what he is going through and it certainly puts my own hairloss situation into perspective. Thanks so much for sharing this case and please keep us updated....

RCWest I agree with you. I think it would be great to have a series of this cases to show that its a viable option to this patient community.

I received an email from this young man's mom this morning saying that he was really starting to grow hair....and it wasn't the 6 months I'd told them it would likely take to start.
Hopefully they'll stop by when he's out of school for Christmas break and I can get a picture. Dr. Lindsey McLean VA

Excellent work..Im sure this case and other cases like this are tough for you to work on and really hit home since you can certainly relate to this situation..I continue to pray for your daughter! I hope this young man has an outstanding result!

Thanks
Yeah, other than this young man and his parents, there is no one more motivated for him to get a nice result than me. As I told both of these boys and their parents, my initial interest in this was completely selfish as I figured I needed to know that it worked as an option for my own daughter...but that if they could accept that, that they should know that my team and I would do our absolute best in trying to help solve their problem. Here are the pictures that his mom sent on Thanksgiving weekend, 3months, 1 week.
I hope to see him in the office next spring at the 6 or 7 month mark. Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
