This 47 y/o male who had worn a hairpiece with clips for 20 years presented for transplants and correction of the bald clip sites. First session performed in Sept 07 with 1790 grafts (4473 hairs) divided between 1530 FU's and 260 MFU grafts. He returns 8 months later for 2nd session, at which time attached photos were taken. Main emphasis 1st session was on top, with less dense transplanting of "clip spots." 2nd session featured aggressive filling in of these bald spots also.

Just wanted to add that this patient had unusually coarse hair, which made a big difference in achieving this much result so quickly. Also, I am an employee of Saratoga Hair Transplant Center.

Betsy,

It looks like this patient has a combination of androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata.

This result looks very good. I'm confused though, how many grafts did this patient have when the pictures were taken? This looks like a lot more than 1790 grafts, even if there were 260 multi-follicular units.

Can you please clarify?

Thanks,

Bill

This is a nice result-- the patient is set up nicely for a bit of additional hairline work and some "fill in"

A couple of questions:
1. Is the transplant "weighted" in order to provide a layering effect when the hair is combed to the side?
2. Were the MFU's used in the bald spots left by the clips?

Overall, very natural and the patient must be thrilled to be free of the hairpiece.

BTW if you look at pic #3 it seems to show the patient had quite a smattering of native hair left, which could contribute to the effect as well.

I checked with Dr. Beehner, who did this patient's initial consultation and history, and the bald spots are definitely not alopecia areata, but are the result of attaching a hairpiece with clips on the exact same areas for 20 years. Someone who didn't know this history would certainly be justified in making the diagnosis of AA based on just looking at these photos however.
Dr Pawlinga said that the grafts were not "weighted" to favor the left side, where the hair is styled from, but that they were evenly distributed on both the left and right sides. And lastly, the MFU grafts were not placed within the bald spots off to the sides, but were used in the front-central inner areas for density. The patient said that his hair started growing almost immediately, at least most of it, which may partly account for why he looks so good at only the nine month point.

Betsy,

Thanks for the additional information on this patient.

Also, can you please clarify how many grafts this patient had in the presented photos? This seems like a mighty impressive result for only 1790 grafts.

Thanks,

Bill
