Dr. Vogel has been involved in hair transplantation for many years. After seeing him and his staff performing hair transplantation, it's apparent that he has kept pace with all the most recent advances including ultra refined grafting and the trichophytic closures.
As an experienced board certified plastic surgeon performing surgery in a beautiful state licensed facility, Dr. Vogel brings considerable surgical experience to every hair transplant surgery. He places great emphasis on state of the art surgical practices and patient safety. While just less than half of Dr. Vogel's plastic surgery practice is hair transplantation, his strong skills as a plastic surgeon make his donor closure in particular highly refined. To optimize the quality of his donor closure Dr. Vogel does a "double layer closure" in which both internal and external sutures are used to close the donor area after the donor strip has been removed using a single blade. The internal suture below the surface of the skin/epidermis bring the edges of the donor area together so that the external surface suture/stitches have minimal tension or pull on them. This reduces the tension on the suture and skin and the potential for stretching and scarring. He also performs the trichophytic closure technique to minimize the visibility of the donor strip scar. This technique enables hairs to grow up and through the thin scar in the donor area, thus covering and disguising the thin narrow scar. He has up to seven experienced medical technicians available to assist in performing hair transplantation. This enables his clinic to provide sessions up to 3,000 grafts. However, Dr. Vogel is reluctant to remove donor strips wider than 1.5 cm in order to minimize any chance of scarring or stretching in the donor area. Thus his sessions rarely exceed 2,500 grafts. While his session sizes are not as large as some clinics, the quality and refinement of the procedure are world class. Dr. Vogel uses a 19 gauge needle, which makes small incisions that are approximately 0.9 mm. Given the small size of these incisions his staff has moved toward trimming tiny grafts that typically contain mostly one and two hair grafts and very few three hair grafts. His surgery in recent years has evolved toward ever greater refinement and is now truly ultra refined. Patient Observation: Patient during the day of my visit received 2,347 follicular unit grafts from a strip measuring just over 1 cm wide and approximately 19 cm long. Incisions made by the tiny 19 gauge needles were very minimally invasive. Dr. Vogel also took care to control the depth and orientation of each incision. Note - Patient had a slight skin/scalp condition prior to surgery.

Pat,
Glad to finally see a little more work from Dr. Vogel. I had taken it upon myself to research things on him when our buddy NoBuzz was getting work done. He certainly appears to pay a lot of attention to detail. I understand that often we preach to stay only with those that are solely doing HT's but it appears that he is doing very refined work that is top notch and obviously because of his surgical background is great with the sutures. By the way Pat, it looks like your hair is coming along great since your last HT and I believe it is about time we see some more detailed photos? NN |

Pat,
I would agree that Dr. Vogel's work is ultra refined according to the pictures I'm seeing here. I admit, I haven't seen much of his work - but hopefully this will change. Any chance that Dr. Vogel's clinic will become more involved in our community? Did Dr. Vogel give any reasons as to why he doesn't want to remove more than a 1.5 cm strip? Perhaps as time passes, he will reconsider this on patients who have the laxity to go beyond. Bill

Pat,
Nice to see you made a visit to Dr. Vogel's clinic and his work was up to your standards. I supppose the one reason he would not be in the coalition is his preference for smaller sessions. I can attest to Dr. Vogel's work since I had a 1625 graft procedure with some plug repair work added. My hairline has become more refined day by day and I am 7 months in with more results to come. I sense Dr. Vogel is not the best choice for a younger guy wanting a dense pack large session but would be a great choice for a patient in need of repair work or a mature hairline with a soft hairline look. I fall in that category. I am curious as to the needles vs custom blade incisions and whether anyone could really tell after everthing heals which method was used? Is it that big an issue I guess is really my question? Pat? Bill? |

nobuzz,
There have been cases made that custom flat blades are superior to needles and I have a tendency to agree. I don't necessarily believe, however, that the final result will be impacted (assuming both the needles and custom flat blades are ultra refined )...but from what I understand, there is less trauma to the scalp with the use of flat blades (assuming the needles and flat blades are of the same size) which ultimately can minimize shock loss and for that matter healing time. I also wonder why Dr. Vogel uses a 19 gauge .9 mm needle for 1 and 2 hair grafts when other clinics use a smaller instrument as small as 0.6 mm to 0.7 mm. Though .9 mm is still considered small, it is still a little larger than the majority of what our coalition doctors use. Bill

Nobuzz,
What Bill said is spot on from everything that I have seen. However for whatever reason, the immediate post op results of someone that had used needles sometimes to me looks more refined. Not sure if it is in my head or what. There is a video that Jotronic put together displaying the difference in the incision with blade vs. needle and it is hard to argue after seeing it displayed visually. Do a search for that as it is rather interesting to see. NN |
