3,000 grafts on the hairline 2.5 years ago. Strip, ultra-refined, lateral slit, dense pack.
We posted him in the past on this site at 1.5 years post op, so this is an update.

Dak,
What can I say? I only put the hair back. How it's styled goes beyond my mandate! Asterisk, Thanks for the kudos. But 800-900 grafts wouldn't cut it in an area HALF that size. Look at it like this. When I reconstruct hairlines on heads that are "average" in size (this patient's is quite large) it takes 800 grafts alone just to make a 1cm deep hairline all the way across. That wouldn't be nearly enough. Don't be fooled. He had ALOT of real estate to cover AND it had to be thick enough to blend in with the thick native hair he maintained immediately behind the recipient area. If you use my assistant's hand as a "size reference" you will see that it would take almost two palm witdths to cover his forehead. That's big. **Educational Note** There is no such thing as "one size fits all" in hair transplant surgery. This patient presents a unique challenge in that while his hairline was COMPLETELY gone, he still maintained VERY thick hair just behind. This is what I call the "Fredo effect" (the guy from the God Father movies). Add to that he has a curl, and the thickness differential between him and other patients is off the charts. In most cases there is a transition zone from bald to thin to thicker, to thick. But not here. The boundry line between bald and super-thick is less than 1 cm. Very rare. In this case ALOT of transplants are needed to overcome the contrast and for the cosmetic result to be significant. Ironically, had the he had LESS hair behind the transplant area, say an "average" amount, his results in the front would have appeared even more dramatic. While I might recommend just a small touch up in the center forelock just in the front hairline, he's happy and considers himself finished, and therefore so do I. Dr. Feller

ASTERISK You and this guy had about the same area to cover and you recieved the same amount of grafts.
Do you feel Dr Epstein used too many? I doubt it. When you have a ton of hair left behind a thinning area you have to dense pack or it will look obvious and weird. Ive seen better results From Dr Feller ,This one is average |

I do understand that his hair was thick like mine, and of COURSE I don't think Dr. Epstein used too many grafts LOL.
But in looking at my pics (now obviously I have no idea of knowing what mine will eventually look like) and his, it just seems that my hairline was moved down a good bit lower than his and that's on top of the fact that Dr. E had to go almost an inch into my existing hair to thicken it up. Anyway, just thought i'd comment. I feel like saying something negative about Fellers work is like criticizing a Van Gogh painting LOL. |

Dr. Feller:
Tell us please, is that really Art Garfunkel? We've been posting about celebrities getting transplants for a while now. Hello darkness my old friend, that looks great to me. I bet he's thrilled.

Asterisk,
I'm confused by your first comment. Didn't you just have a 3000 graft procedure with Dr. Epstein in a similarly "small" area? In my opinion, 3000 grafts was appropriate in your and this patient's case for the density you both probalby desire. Dr. Feller, It's nice to see some patient's who have had hair transplantation done who wear their hair longer. Nice work. Bill
