SMG performed a small fue session last Friday to repair a donor scar on a patient who most recently went to a clinic in France. We used a 1mm punch to extract all grafts.
Graft/haircount = 331grafts - 831 hairs 1's - 45 2's - 115 3's - 122 4's - 49 I trimmed some of the grafts myself and asked the other tech who trimmed the remaining to get the transection rate. We both independantly came up with 5%. I think by the numbers of exact graft shown of mostly 3's, the transection rate was very minimal. This patient is from the UK but hopefully he'll send us progress updates.

That looks good. My question is: How does a small fue session compare, recovery and pain-wise, to a strip procedure? Say, how would a 400 fue session compare to a 1500 strip session?
Any downtime with fue? More? Thanks.

From what I understand, with FUE, the downtime and recovery time is minimal and the pain is almost nonexistent except for the local anesthetic. Of course it'll vary depending on an individual's pain threshold.
That's correct Dr. Carmen.

Thanks for posting these Janna.
Guys-hopefully this will help those who are on the fence about repairing a scar or want a touch in the temple area, etc.... see that the down time is less, the cost is not terrible and you do not have to take 2 weeks off of work to heal up! Anyway, I hope we are able to track this patients progress as well as others. Take Care, Jason

Janna,
Terrific! Thanks for posting. A few questions for clarification. From the above, I'm gathering that the follicular units are extracted and then further trimmed under micrsocopes? I assume that means the transection rate you and the other techs got of 5% is from the trimming process, not from the extraction process which may have it's own transection percentage. Can you clarify the above and also let us know what percent may have been transected during the extraction process? Also, how is Dr. Shapiro liking using FUE so far? Thanks, Bill

Bill, the 5% is from the extraction process.....our techs do not transect follicles when they trim them under microscopes??????
When a clinic takes the time to view every graft under a microscope, you get a better idea of transection and hair/graft counts are accurate. Anyway, Janna can give you specifics, but 5% of 331 is about 16 grafts---which could mean a 3 hair graft is a 2 hair, a 2 hair is a 1 hair, or that half of the hair was sheared off during extraction leaving an intact bulb that will most likely grow, etc.... As far as I know Dr. Shapiro is enjoying this, but Janna can tell you more.....if your nice. Take Care, Jason

This looks exciting. What is the typical transection rate on a strip surgery? Some grafts have to be transected along the edges where the strip is removed. Right?

Jason,
I appreciate your response. I was confused when Janna said she "trimmed" some of them herself and then found a 5% transection rate. I know a number of clinics use the follicular unit as is after extraction and don't further trim them while others do trim them to further refine them. I will wait for Janna to further explain the process. Thanks, Bill
