I read posts all the time where someone says, "If you are going to get a hair transplant you should ONLY go FUE if you are getting under X number of grafts. Strip is only for mega-sessions."

I beg to differ.

This patient came in yesterday for his one year follow-up visit. The first photo of the donor area is a bit washed out so it looks like it may be a typical donor scar but to our surprise the patient allowed us to shave the area where we removed the strip. When shaved, the real story is revealed. I would have taken video but he had already left before I knew he was here. I will try to get him in for this later.

Strip width was 1.3 cm, length 10cm. Number of grafts, 1424.

I beg to differ with you .

No offense but those FUE "scars" are much more predictable than strip scars, and while the surgeon might be great, you still don't know how the scar will turn out. I had about the same number in FUE and I have no problem going down to #1 or even #0 for that matter. That is almost priceless to me.

On the other hand: if one does not have the extra money, or never cuts his hair "too" short then strip is it.

Joe,

Amazing...who in the world could even tell there was a scar there? I hope my scar ends up looking like that!

Mark H,

I trust you are kidding :P

John,

I'm sorry but I've seen far too many results where the patient went in with the initial goal of being able to shave to the bone or even a # 1 only to be dissapointed with the outcome from FUE. I know strip is not perfect. If it were then FUE would not have been conceived to begin with however FUE is not the perfect solution that it was once touted as being either. I remember it quite vividly as only a couple of years ago it was pushed as being "scarless". We now know it is not. In fact, many of the selling points of FUE have been debunked or at least now classifies as questionable.

If you can shave to a zero guard then good for you. I am always happy to hear of a patient that has achieved their hair loss goals. I do not think however that donor healing, via strip or FUE, is more or less predictable with either procedure.
