Hi,
I've noticed with some HT patients that the new hair appears to be curly or fuzzy like. This individual prior to having an HT, looks like he has or once had straight hair. The new hair on the front kind of looks twisty or fuzzy/wavy like (if you know what I mean). Is their any particular reason for this - use of hair spray etc? Or perhaps his hair characteristics? I understand this patient is older than most, but I've noticed this type of growth in younger patients too? Thanks |

Some patients develop a texture change in their hair during the hair regrowth phase. The reason for the change in the texture following hair transplantation is not well known, but I believe it is related to the healing dynamics between the follicle and graft insertion site. Eventhough after hairtransplant the folliclular sites seem to heal relatively fast, but the healing between the actual follicle and the scalp continues, this is a normal healing process. Sometimes during this healing process, it develops a scar tissue between the follicle and the scalp. Some doctors believe that it is this scar tissue that effects the hair characteristics and may alter the hair texture in some patients. This altered hair texture gives that kinky/fuzzy look that you described. In some of my clients the hair returns to its original texture after furthur healing, but in some it remains the same.

regarding the texture issue, i think a better haircut could help, or perhaps some styling product. it will be interesting to see him post op #2....

My first transplant from Nuhart had me with fuzzy minis that looked like a birdsnest for at least 18 months
Thank God the texture finally returned to the way it was. |

Dr. Meshkin,
Thanks for posting these. I can see what members mean by the hair being a bit frizzy, but as you already indicated, this often diminishes with time, often 12-18 months after surgery. Do you have any photos of this patient from the top that you can share with us? Can you also explain how you made up the hairline on this particular patient? 350 one hair grafts seems pretty minimal. I also encourage you to take higher resolution clearer photos, even if this means acquiring a newer camera. Sometimes setting up a professional studio in your clinic with a backdrop and proper lighting can go along way for showing the most accurate and easy to see results. All in all, I'd say this is a nice result. Clearer pictures would give us a better, more realistic impression of the result. Best wishes, Bill
