I was fortunate during my tour of Arizona to find a new gem amongst the rough in Arizona. Although he has been performing hair transplantation for over 20 years, little was known about Dr. Shelly Friedman on the Web. But I expect this will soon change.
I had an opportunity to observe Dr. Friedman and his very experienced staff performing ultra refined follicular unit hair transplantation. It was obvious that he has stayed current on the most recent advances. I'm was impressed with his credentials, experience and surgical technique when I recently visited his clinic. Dr. Friedman has been a champion of creating standards and credentials for the hair restoration profession and is a past President of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery. He also has a strong background in dermatology. The Surgery of the Day - On the day of my visit my visit the patient wanted to re-establish his hairline. His donor density was a bit below average at 80 follicular units per cm2 (average is between 90 to 100 FUs per cm2) so his donor strip yielded 2,022 follicular unit grafts. Dr. Friedman removed the donor strip with a single blade and then did a double layer closure to minimize any visible scarring. He carefully removed the donor strip and took it out in sections. His experienced staff that day ??“ Adriana (12 years), Jessica (10 years), Amy (6 years) and Ramona (7 years) then trimmed all the very refined grafts under microscopes. In my opinion, the grafts looked excellent. His staff has the capability to do sessions of up to 4,000 grafts. Dr. Friedman is a big fan of Hasson and Wong and adopted their minimally invasive lateral slit techniques into his clinic beginning in 2003. However, they do not require the patient to shave their existing hair in the recipient area. Dr. Friedman uses the custom cut blades to create lateral slit incisions that are as small as 0.65 millimeters. Such tiny and minimally invasive incisions enable him to place the incisions and grafts very close together to achieve good density in one session. In general I was very impressed with the quality of the surgery performed by Dr. Friedman and his experienced staff. The patient was also given free time under the low light laser, which Dr. Friedman believes can speed the patient's post op healing. Dr. Friedman was also excited by how patients who are applying Polysporin Ointment on their recipient area four times a day for four days are seeing virtually no scabbing or redness five days after surgery. In his opinion, patients who follow this regimen have recipient areas at five days that are as clean as what would normally take ten days. In addition to observing the surgery, I had an opportunity to meet with two of Dr. Friedman's patients. Their results looked completely natural and their donor scars were hard to detect even upon close examination. Given Dr. Friedman and his staff's excellent credentials, experience and technique, I have invited him to present examples of his patient results on this community in order to be considered for recommendation.

Pat,
It's nice to see that there is yet another talented surgeon in Arizona. I look forward to learning more about Dr. Friedman and hope that he will post some of his patient results on the forum to be considered by this community for recommendation. Best wishes, Bill
