Ahhhh...didn't know that.

What's the average number of available grafts?

In our experience most patients have 6,000 to 8,000 that can be safely transplanted over their lifetime.

This brings up the basic question of what we are doing in a hair transplantation. We are redistributing a limited amount of donor hair to a potentially expanding bald or thinning recipient area.

For the readers of this thread who are not familiar with the concept of limited donor supply or just want a good review, the HTN network has a good animated video called " recreating a full look". This video reviews the concept of moving a limited amount of donor hair and also has an interactive graft calculator. This video can be found at the bottom of the following web page

http://www.hairlosslearningcenter.org/content/Treatment...ined-transplants.asp

I think this video explains well the concept of limited donor.

I hope this answers your question

Dr Paul Shapiro you have been producing some excellent results, kudos. With the previous post you stated most have 6000-8000, so are you saying the average donor are provides 7,000 fu's? I like the sounds of that!!!!

Arrie-- there are a couple of schools of thought---the predominate one already stated by Dr. Paul.

However, docs are taking longer strips and removing a bit more tissue so we are seeing some pretty impressive graft totals.

Additionally, we are yet to truly discover the availability of donor via FUE---either as a stand alone procedure or used in tandem with strip.

I intend to see how this works out in the coming months---perhaps I can get 500-1000 strip grafts and 1000 fue grafts (just an example) raising my total to 8500-9000 total grafts.

Anyway, it is always good to play the averages and plan accordingly--then be pleasantly surprised to get those additional 1000-2000 grafts.

Hope to see your updates soon, BTW!

Its really exciting that as time goes technology also takes a step forward, being more donor available. Its really exciting to see SMG take a cautious approach with FUE. This being said I see how "certain zones" can slightly be expanded to gain 1000-2000 extra hopeful grafts. Its always exciting when we take steps forward to help with our insecurity. I will be visiting Janna in August so I can be taking my one year follow up. Nice to see some of your updates too.... Once again good job Dr. Paul Shapiro
