This man had a procedure 10 days ago which included the removal of a 16cm long strip 1.4cm wide. A 2 layer trichophytic closure was done and these pictures show the area immediately after cutaneous suture removal this morning.

Note that his hair superior to the incision line covers the donor area to casual observers.

We always recommend gentle massage to the scar line, for 1 minute before every meal to help soften the scar line, and encourage a month of daily application of either vitamin E or mederma. All scars tend to get redder and lumpier for about 6 weeks, and we encourage a postop check at about a month to make sure all is proceeding according to plan.

Well done, Dr. Lindsey...

Unrelatedly -- I haven't been keeping up as much recently on these forums; have you opened your Tysons Corner office?

PGP,

I have planted hair in scars with good success except in keloids. Rather though, I often will just excise a wide scar and close in a tension free manner. Quicker and easier for all.

FM, yes we opened 3 weeks ago at 1489 Chain Bridge Road Suite 300, McLean VA

Looks great Dr. Lindsey.

How soon after surgery do you recommend a gentle scar massage? And can you describe how to do it?

Thanks,

Bill

The day that the sutures/staples come out. Press this hard (I show folks how hard, but not too hard) along the scar for one minute before every meal. That way it gets done a couple of times a day, but people aren't spending their life massaging their scalp.

Won't this possibly stretch the scar massaging it so soon after a procedure? Or does it provide blood flow to allow better circulation for optimal healing?

No it won't stretch a scar on a properly closed incision. The key to scar results is usually in achieving a tension free closure, not just hogging things closed.
