Dr. Beehner has been recommended on the Hair Transplant Network for over six years and has consistently earned strong patient reviews in the past from his very loyal patients (view his profile/recommendation at http://www.hairtransplantnetwork.com...rs.asp?DrID=5).

He is also very well respected by his physician colleagues and was awarded the highest honor in the field of hair transplantation ??“ the Platinum Follicle award.

Dr. Beehner himself suffered from hair loss and did hair transplantation in the early eighties. He then became interested in improving the results he and other patients could get and has performed hair transplantation exclusively for the past ten years.

In my opinion, he is very genuine and interested in providing his patients with the best combination of naturalness, fullness and value. While he does provide sessions of all microscopically trimmed follicular unit grafts, Dr. Beehner believes that some patients can achieve the optimal illusion of density by using some multiple follicular unit grafts in the central areas.

These multiple follicular unit grafts, which are all trimmed under microscopes, typically contain two or even three follicular units that are naturally close together. Thus such multi haired grafts are able to achieve a higher density of hair than can be achieved by placing separate follicular unit grafts into even the most densely packed incisions.

Thus by judiciously and strategically placing a limited number of multiple follicular unit grafts in the central areas behind the hairline, Dr. Beehner believes that these denser grafts can break up and mask what might otherwise be a see through or transparent looking hair transplant.

Dr. Beehner sincerely believes that many patients, especially those with fine or light colored hair, can achieve both naturalness and a greater illusion of density ultimately by combining follicular unit grafts with a smaller number of multiple follicular units that are strategically placed in the mid scalp areas. He believes that using small grafts exclusively often results in a natural but sparse/thin look.

After spending an hour looking through a half a dozen patient photo albums, I think Dr. Beehner has had a great deal of success in creating full thick looking results for many of his patients. Many of his patients swear by his technique and their end results.

Thus for patients who want a cost effective alternative to all follicular unit grafting I believe he merits serious consideration.

Over half of Dr. Beehner's patients choose to have all follicular unit grafts. However, for appropriate candidates, Dr. Beehner does recommend the use of some 4 and 5 hair grafts in the mid scalp region to create an optimal illusion of full density.

On the day of my visit Dr. Beehner performed an all follicular unit session of 2,056 follicular units (30% ones 60% twos 10% threes). He used tiny custom cut blades as small as 0.7 to create lateral (perpendicular) incisions in the patients hairline area. Further back in and around the existing hair he switched to sagital (parallel) incisions so that the incisions run parallel to the existing follicles and thus in between them. He believes this best minimizes the transection and loss of existing hairs.

He also took great care in removing the donor strip with minimal transection of the follicles and the surrounding tissues and vessels. The donor closure using sutures was also first class.

Dr. Beehner was assisted by Dr. Chris Pawlinga who is a hair transplant patient of Dr. Beehner who later did a formal fellowship with him. Since that time Dr. Pawlinga has worked with Dr. Beehner on a part time basis and has a great passion for hair transplantation surgery.

In my opinion the procedure I observed was ultra refined and of very high quality.

Sorry to hear that your unhappy with your HT...Just thought I'd share my experiences...I've had 4 HT's--2 round plug transplants & 2 all FU transplants...I've been reading/participating in this forum since 2001 & it's not odd to read that someone has had a negative experience with a recommended doc...as Pat discussed in his report, Dr. Beehner performs combination transplants using FU families & all FU HT's depending on patient preference...I had an all FU transplant, of 1508 grafts, in 2001 with Dr. Beehner & was pleased with the results--in those day's 1500 grafts was considered a "mega session"...after having 4 procedures, my overall experience with Dr. Beehner was at the "top of the list"...because of a distance factor, I later consulted with Dr. Feller, who had very favorable comments about my prior HT's--in fact, I believe he said, "why are you here"?...I believe Dr. Beehner's combination procedures are in the 1200 graft range--perhaps this is the procedure that stumper has written about...IMO mini-grafts can loosely be referred to as a "plug"...to my knowledge, Dr. Shapiro & other top docs have performed this type of procedure when the situation dicated...I'm currently considering a final HT to complete my restoration & I'm considering Dr. Beehner espectially since he's now performing "ultra" refined FUT's...I've narrowed my list down to Dr. Beehner, Dr. Feller, & Dr. Vogel--because I wouldn't shave my head, I have to reluctantly exclude H & W...I hope this helps with the discussion!

Stumper,

I'm sorry you were disappointed with Dr. Beehner. But clearly he now does use tiny incisions and refined grafts in the appropriate areas. The session I saw was over 2,000 grafts so he also clearly now does sessions much larger than 1,200 grafts when appropriate.

Dr. Beehner's philosophy differs from Dr. Feller's in that Dr. Beehner believes that some patients can achieve the optimal illusion of density by having some 4 and 5 hair grafts in the central areas of the mid scalp region, while Dr. Feller believes in achieving density by using greater numbers of one and two hair grafts in the central area and throughout the balding areas.

Dr. Beehner's approach typically requires multiple sessions to achieve the end result. Many patients swear by his approach and philosophy of having no scalp visible on top due to the 4 and 5 hair grafts creating a dense look that is hard to see into or through.

While I personally lean toward large all follicular unit sessions, I believe some patients may benefit most from the larger graft approach. Dr. Beehner's multigraft sessions are also typically more cost effective for patients, with sessions typically costing about $5000.

Dr. Beehner and his staff certainly have the capability to cut loads of very tiny grafts and charge for each and every one of them. But Dr. Beehner sincerely believes that for some patients the use of some 4 and 5 hair grafts in the central region will give them the greatest optical illusion of density.

Dr. Beehner offers his patients both all follicular unit sessions or combination grafting depending on characteristics and needs of the patient. I leave it to the patient's of Dr. Beehner's to choose the approach that best suites them.

Best wishes, Pat

Hello to all,

I am not a regular writer on this site, but after reading the remark about Dr. Beehner, I felt compelled to respond. I had three transplants with Dr. Beehner. I have to look up the actual counts for each one. The first one was a combo of micro follicular and multi follicular grafts and the others were all micro follicular units. My results are absolutely outstanding!!! The first HT filled in the center of my head (I don't know all the jargon, sorry), and it looks full and thick. He concentrated after that on my hairline and temple areas and the results are great. My nephew was so impressed that he just had his first HT with Dr. Beehner and will be going for another. Even my brother is going for a consultation to get restorative work on the doll plugs he received from another doctor many years ago.

My hairline and temples look fabulous and natural and my hair looks full on the top as well. I am actually thinking of a last HT with Dr. Beehner to do a final touch up. If I didn't think he did good work, I would not be going back, nor would I have recommended my brother and nephew to him. he is a top notch surgeon and a first class gentleman. His staff is not only well trained, but friendly and personable. They make you feel at ease and comfortable.

I recommend Dr. Beehner unconditionally to all who read this. His work is top notch and you won't be disappointed. I'm sorry I cant give you all the techincal jargon, but I am a layman who is only interested in one thing... the final result! And, the final result with Dr. Beehner is... excellent! If I can find the paperwork for my previous HT's, I'll post thework he did.

Thank you.

Stumper,

I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience with Dr. Beehner.

How long ago did you have your surgery with him? Do you have any before/immediately post op/after pictures you can share with us before you had repair work done? Like all hair transplant doctors who have been around long enough, techniques and technologies have evolved and quality hair transplant physicians will continue to move ahead with the times.

Also...

Understand that there is a difference between our coalition doctors and our recommended doctors. You can read about the differences here. As far as I understand, Dr. Beehner is not being considered for coalition membership at this time.

Like Pat, I also have a tendency to lead toward larger all follicular unit sessions...but I also agree that the immediately post op work I see in the above referenced pictures appear to be ultra refined.

I do sympathize with your situation and hope you can provide us with more information. May I suggest starting your own thread with your experience and photos. This would be helpful.

Thanks,

Bill

jhamil,

I am glad you have had a positive experience with Dr. Beehner.

Since you have been a member of our community since 2001, I looked you up to see if you have posted your experience and pictures on another thread and I found them here. Unfortunately, the pictures are not displaying properly. Any chance you can repost?

Of course, this hair transplant is also 6 years old at this point too.

In order to credit a doctor - we must evaluate his current work as those of us who have been around for awhile know and understand that the history of hair transplantation is not pretty.
