I recommend the use of rogaine after surgery for all my patients now. There is little question in my mind that it speeds up the growth process. The rogaine may be stopped after a year without fear of "rebound" hairloss. This phenom applies only to weak local hair, not transplants.

Think about it... If rogaine were applied (for some reason) to the donor area and then stopped would it make those hairs fall out? Probably not, because they had no need to depend on Rogaine in the first place. So why would they fall out just because they were relocated to the top? They wouldn't.

OK, so you are saying to use it to speed the growing of "transplanted" hair. After a year continued use is unecessary with regard to "transplanted" hair.
Meanwhile, I suppose, the surving soldiers who fought valiantly have now become Rogaine junkies and will soon die off following discontinued use. Do you think it possible that if enough of these junkies hung around (during HT maturation), perhaps one could be realizing a false appearance of density? Chaos, panic and disorder...my work here is done.

I'm not sure if I understand your question, but if you have so much hair in the recipient site prior to surgery that it's loss would constitute a significant cosmetic change down the road, then the surgery itself was probably premature.

Dr. Feller,
I'm currently 3 months post op. Do you think using rogaine would still benefit me with regards to speeding up the growth process or am I at the point to where it wouldn't pay to bother due to the fact that the transplanted hairs are probably getting ready to come in on their own anyway? Also, is there much difference between the generic minoxidil and rogaine? Do you recommend the 5% or the 2% solely for transplant growth? The instructions on the box recommend applying one ml in the vertex area only twice daily. Is that the instructions you give to your patients? Start using Rogaine now! I recommend 2% once per day for my patients. Dr. Feller

I am at 25 days post-op and looks like I have lost about 25-30% of my new grafts. Everything seems to be healing quite nicely. I used Rogaine 5% in the recipient area for the first time 2 days ago and my scalp was red the next morning. Should I wait a bit longer or just start using it every other day until my scalp adjusts to it?
