HI everyone,

I know that the main question behind the use of dutasteride is if its going to kill your sperm, and that the Korean trial that was recently completed indicated it was a superior hair loss drug but failed to review one of the most important functions that may be affected: sperm count.

I came across this 2007 study that placed 18-35 year olds (not 65 year old prostate patients) on dutasteride in order to find out about the Effect of 5{alpha}-Reductase Inhibition with Dutasteride and Finasteride on Semen Parameters and Serum Hormones in Healthy Men

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if this has already been posted. If it hasnt then I would like to forward it on to Dr Rassman; however, in the interests of not wasting his time, I thought it would be best to post it here for review first.

Here is one of the concluding paragraphs:

Quote:
The average effect on spermatogenesis in normal men appears limited because group means did not fall below preestablished thresholds for clinical significance for total sperm count, sperm concentration, semen volume, sperm motility, and sperm morphology, except for one time point for total sperm count (finasteride at 26 wk). However, statistically significant decreases from baseline were also observed for total sperm count at 26 wk for dutasteride, semen volume at 26 wk for finasteride, and at 26 and 52 wk of treatment and 26 wk of follow-up for dutasteride, for sperm concentration at 26 wk of treatment for finasteride, and for sperm motility for both compounds at all time points. No significant changes were observed for sperm morphology.

I've been on dutasteride for a couple of months now (though I alternate between finasteride, every other day), but I still worry about spermatogenesis, even though I'm not married.

I suppose some day, I'll have to take a break from the drug if I want to conceive.
