Hey guys,

After reading a link to a previous post from Spex (always reliable), regarding pre and post HT tips. I noticed that it was advised to limit yourself to exposure from sun after undergoing a HT. What are peoples knowledge and experiences of this. Obvioulsy, in the very early stages, extreme care must be taken to rest and heal your scalp on both donor and recipent area, but I would have imagined, 4-6 weeks in, that this would not cause too much problem. Obviously burning would not be a positive thing but with care I wouldnt have imagined a problem.

In my own situation, I plan to take the HT later on in the year and then travel, this eliminates any work commitments and allows me to be more relaxed and almost distracted throughout the recovery and initial growth doldrums. But my travel will be to tropical climates, therefore hense the question. Also, I plan to undertake a lot of surfing a couple months in to recovery. Your thoughts?

Regards

Raphael

Raphael,

Too much sunburn on your scalp the first couple months out from hair transplant surgery could cause extended or in rare cases, permanent discoloration of the scalp. Therefore, it's better to wear a head covering or sunscreen on your scalp if you will be out in the sun for an extended period of time.

Of course, it's always smart to wear sunscreen to protect your skin regardless of whether or not you've had a hair transplant.

Don't let those ultra-violet rays get you!

permanent discoloration of the scalp
DAMN!

But what about possibility of damage to the grafts themselves?

I have the same question. I am going to Costa Rica in a few months (4 months post op) and would hate to have to keep my head covered all the time. Also I would love to blend the scalp color and possibly camaflouge the thinning a bit with some sun on my dome.

Anyone with post op tanning experience please chime in.

I'm about 7 months post op and just got back from vacation. I went out without my hat, in the sun and found that my scalp was very sensitive. My recepient area had alot of redness which kind of freaked me out.I wore a hat for the rest of my trip and the redness went away. So my advice is either wear a hat or use some spray on sunscreen for your scalp.
At 4 months, your grafts are well set, but don't risk sunburn.
