I was born into a Sikh family and had tied my hair on the head for the first 17 years of my life. I cut my hair at 17 and noticed that I had lost quite a few hair at the front of my head (Norwoord 1-2) and some in the crown area. After about a couple of years of me cutting the hair, most of my hair in the crown year came back to the point that it it looks normal now, but I still have hair loss in the front above my forehead. Some hair in the front also came back and grew thicker than when I had at 17. At the beginning I thought that I had male pattern baldness and started taking Propecia (At age 20) for it for about 1 year. I don't think I noticed any difference after going on Propecia (the hair did not grow thicker or thinner because of it or despite it.) I stopped taking Procepia after a year and still did not notice any difference in my hair. This led me to believe that I do not have male pattern baldness. This is my opinion of myself at the moment.
I have very fine hair and so does most of my relatives on my father's side. On my mother's side most of my family has thick hair and few have fine hair. Only a few people on my mother's or father's side are losing hair due to male pattern baldness. I cannot tell for sure, but I think the hair loss that they do have is because of the turban because it does not match the normal baldness pattern. My dad who is 50 also cut his hair and I can tell that he has really thin hair all over the scalp, but he does not have a receded hairline, rather just very fine and thin hair all over the head which makes me think that it's caused by wearing his hair tight on the head under a turban for so long.
Now I'm 22 and I went to Dr. Hasson and Wong clinic and told them my story and showed them my hair loss. Dr. Wong thought that I'm a good enough candidate for surgery. So about 5 weeks ago (March 7, 2012) I had a FUT surgery done by Dr. Wong for 1500 grafts. Dr. Wong shaved some hair at the front of my scalp where the recipient hair would go. I feel that I might have had some shock loss at the front of the scalp where he placed the grafts. I am not too sure though since my hair isn't fully grown yet. Now I'm just hoping to get good results showing after 6 months and hoping that the scar will be as thin as possible and that the redness will fade soon.
I'm not taking any medications at the moment for hair loss since I do not think that I have male pattern baldness, however I'm not too sure any more. I might have to start taking Propecia again. It is very hard tell whether the hair fall I see is normal amount of hair or more than normal. It is also very hard to tell whether I have my hair line receded or density of hair declined in over the years.
